The New York Rangers (15-16-1) lost to the Nashville Predators (14-14-3) by the score of 4-1, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
After the game the Rangers announced that Ryan Callahan will be out 4-6 weeks with an MCL sprain.
...i'm not even mad anymore. I'm really just sad. Sad that the fans have more passion than the players. Sad that they tricked me into thinking they'd play with some urgency tonight. Sad that I've come to the realization that this is just a bad team. Very disheartening. I think I need a hug.
...not that Callahan has been providing anything positive lately, but his injury is the last thing that locker room needed. We can only hope the team somehow rallies around their leader. Although, with the way this team refuses to standup for one another I'm not holding my breath.
...speaking of Callahan, the Rangers are insane if they give him a long term contract with how often he gets injured.
...not sure if I'm more upset about the Callahan injury or the realization that Pyatt or Pouliot is going to have to replace him in the lineup.
...i guess Asham wasn't the spark this team needed. Wonder if Avery has found those skates at the bottom of the Hudson yet.
...Columbus just recalled their backup AHL goaltender to face the Rangers Thursday night.
...Ovechkin put his team on his back with a four goal effort tonight, while Nash had one glimpse of domination. That's the difference between an elite player and a very good one.
...is Stepan holding out again?
...did Torts really have that much of a positive impact on Girardi? Because it's almost like he's never played defense before.
...AV has cut the backup goaltender, criticized players publicly and sat his star goaltender to no avail. Could the players have already tuned this guy out?
...i'm not ready to dump this all on AV as it's more than evident he doesn't have the personnel to run his offensive scheme, but if this ship isn't headed in the right direction soon he might end up getting the Trottier treatment.
...i swear this team has to be allergic to the blue paint in the crease because the offensive players refuse to go there. It's almost like they're afraid to go into the dirty areas. And that's the toughness this team is missing. I see certain Rangers fans complaining that the team doesn't need grinders, they need skill players. The Rangers have enough skilled players. What they don't have are grinders consistently generating offense for themselves and their teammates by working hard, going to the net and causing havoc. This game is more about effort than skill. It's why the Rangers were successful offensively in 2011-12. They didn't have more talent they had more fight.
...Rangers are 1-6-1 in their last eight home games. No wonder it's like a church inside MSG.
...so now what? This team is beyond a quick fix. I think Sather should give the team the remainder of the homestand to figure it out and if they can't resurrect their season it might be time to blow this thing up. Trade as many UFAs and RFAs as they can for draft picks and young talent then call up guys like Miller, McIlrath and Kristo to see what they can do.
...now is that realistic with James Dolan as the owner? I very much doubt it.
...some old friends in town on Thursday as Columbus invades MSG.
Post game talk...
I totally disagree with the article about Callahan's play. he had 4 points in 5 games before going into this game with an injury and he has not been contributing? Including a clutch goal to tie the game against Winnipeg! Cally has not been an issue he has had injuries and fighting through them. He will hopefully be back in 3 weeks. Sprained knee does not usually take too much time to heal, and Cally has always been a fast healer.
Maybe AV can only coach a team with talent and a good GM, imagine that fans and whereas Torts could coach a crappy team fortunately with some players with heart till they were dispensed of and replaced with I don't know what and a 1980's GM. Maybe there is irony in Torts getting the consistent playoff team AV certainly had something to do with and AV getting the remnants of the well Torts/Sather experiment.
Plenty of skill? Where? Just because someone like Hagelin is fast doesn't make him have hockey skill.
We can blame AV (and Torts before him) all we want, but the bottom line is how bad do the players want it? The way the team has played the last two games reminds me of game 3 against Boston last year. Either you have an extreme desire to win and succeed, or you don't. There are several players whose hearts are in question as far as I am concerned. You can sense frustration setting in for some of them, and players with heart grind through those tough times. Players with no heart will resort to cheap shots (Hagelin anyone?). I fear serious characters issues with a majority of this crew, and you can't win with those types of players. Sad, but true.
Anyone on here follow John Tortorella's daughter on Twiiter? Apparently she took a shot at the Rangers on Twiiter, but has since deleted it. According to Jan Levine Hockey Buzz: "BrittanyKellen: NYR and MSG … You got want you want right? Hopefully you find some identity."
Look, I'm not going to go into panic mode just yet. There's a lot of time left in the season and their division is weak enough that they can play like they have been and still be a point out of 3rd. Once concern I do have though is AV's statement last night...“I’m not quite sure we have the personnel to play the type of game I’d like to play, which is more offensive-oriented...” Now he went on to say they may get there but have to play more defensively and it's on him to put a system in place. However, that statement looks like it's calling out Sather to do something to get more offensive players in here. Maybe I'm overthinking it and it's not meant to do that, but a rift between the GM and coach will absolutely sink this team. I hope I'm wrong and this wasn't AV trying to manipulate Sather through the media. If it was, then we could definitely see another Trottier situation.
Finally AV admitted what has been discussed at length on here all season. Square pegs for round holes. He wants to play a system that doesn't have the pieces to make it work. We don't have the high end skill players that Detroit has to make the lack of toughness a non-issue. We can't make people pay for taking liberties....the scary part is as fans we knew this in week one. It took AV 30 games to see that....that is on him and Sather. Did he really think Pouliot, D Moore, Falk were the additions we needed to become the New York Red Wings? He was part of those team build meetings too.
Atleast we have the Olympics this year! 2.5 weeks in February of amazing hockey, rooting for the country of your choice!
A few things:- We all know the Rangers always get beat by back-up goalies but this is now ridiculous. No traffic to the front of the net and absolutely no quality scoring opportunities.- one of the biggest things that goes under, or over, the radar is the fact that historically the team has always bowed down to the other teams fourth line. I just dont understand it.- a huge problem with this team is that Richards is still considered one of the top three forwards. He is putting up some numbers with that one good play a game but cmon. Just watch him.....i personally think he is awful.- Dorsett was our best forward out there in the first period. he ended up playing 12 minutes in the game. - Boyle is awful....Girardi is overrated.....Pyatt should never put on a jersey again.....Lundquvist has been inconsistent and unfortunately we just dont get many favorable bounces.- Mcdonough is awesome......and just wish Zucc was a few inches taller, he has more heart and bigger balls than anyone on this team.- Kreider needs to be out there all the time.
I just ranted a little....apologies.
@TheNYRBlog AV is just as bad a Trottier. Trottier's record as NYR coach: 54 games: 21–26–6–1 a winning percentage of 45.4%.
@TheNYRBlog painfully true. They need to get their shit together
What "should" happen and what "will" happen, are unfortunately two different things. Not to belabor the obvious point on here, but to try to run through it quickly, what "should" happen is that AV should be let go. His style doesn't fit what's needed to win in the East. Unless he can do what Tortorella couldn't, and adapt, then he needs to be shown the door. He's right that you can be a tough team to play against without being tough, but that requires motivating your troops to run through walls like they did in 11-12, and he just doesn't seem to be able to do that. Richards should be bought out, Nash should be traded, and any servicable player should be moved for picks and prospects, as if it were 2004 all over again.
What will happen, as I see it: Because Hank, Nash, and McDonagh are signed long term, and because Sather won't admit he screwed up (remember some of the players he traded in 04 werent his signings) there will be no total rebuild. AV will stay on behind the bench, and Sather will use the offseason to build a team more suited to his coach. The odds are we'll still be on the playoff bubble around the trade deadline, so some minor moves may be made, but unless Sather has a come-to-jesus moment, the majority of our expriing contracts will just expire, rather than be traded as rentals. But the unfortunate truth is we'll continue to float in medocrity.
I don't understand why they cannot play with the fire and grit they played with when they faced Torts and Vancouver every time they hit the ice!! IF they had it then, they can have it now. I don't get it...
I think I am going to need a vacation from this team. And I will be gone anyway from January 1st-10th, but I think my vacation will come sooner rather than later. It is just too painful to watch this group of disinterested players. It is sad, but the few years where Sather took a backseat becase of health issues were the best years this team had in recent history. Cleary he is part of the problem. A big part of the problem.
As much as many people don't want to admit it, Torts did an amazing job with this group. He wrung every drop of success possible out of them.
I do not know why anyone thought that the trades made by Sather with the perennial bottom dweller Columbus Blue Jackets would have strengthened this team. Other than Nash who is a good player(not Great), the rest are a BUST! Brassard left his best game behind him on the first night of the trade. Moore, although young, still is soft defensively. The rest are throw in's I also am waiting for Ulf Sameulsson to start coaching like he played. Nasty in front of his net. Another coach that doesn't fit the players. Also in hockey you have to play with an edge to your game. The only edge to their game is on their skates and you wonder how good that is the way they fall down and lose the puck in the corners.
Kev I wouldn't got as far as saying he's trottier. The guy can coach and has won pretty much his whole career . The issue is we had the right coach for this personnel of lunch pale blue collar players. The difference between our roster and vancouvers is much different. If u make the dinner u have to at least be able to shop for the groceries. This year is a wash we might squeak in as third place team in division and hopefully unload who we won't keep at the deadline have a ton of cap space to fill out the roster around the guys suited for this system. Incoming draftees and FA's will be brought in tailored to fit this scheme. This year wash, next year watch out.
Enough with Prust already. That team completely over achieved. Torts got the most out of a team that could not score whatsoever and just played great defense and blocked shots( along with great goaltending). But everyone including the players wanted change. Well we got change. But we have an offensive minded coach with torts garbage playing it. No skill whatsoever. Cally has been nonexistent. Hags sucks. Step is streaky. Richards is ugh. Wtf the team just stinks period.
It sure looks to me like folks are getting awfully close to our net...back when my kid (goalie) was playing HS hockey, his defenseman never allowed anyone to block him like this...and let me tell you, those boys bled for him! Now I know I'm talking about a different level many stratospheres down, but our boys didn't take any crap...I could send AV some video if he'd like to see...
Softie????? How is this Lundqvist's fault? Most of the shots he faces are unstoppable. Yes there are a few but lets be honest he is still a goalie, and a human and will let shots get by. Its this awful defensive system that AV is using. Man on Man is not working for this team for multiple reasons. We are taking too many chances, making too many mistakes, too many bad passes and a whole lot more of too many's! He is a King, not a God! The whole team is to blame. Not one individual. All our opposing team has to do is get a little aggressive and its over. We need that trap/zone defense back. Last year all we needed to do offensively is do what we are doing now and this year all we need to do is last years defense lol. It's a mess. Just another opinion.
@TheNYRBlog could not have said it better myself
Lundqvist has become King Softie; out defense is second rate, no scoring...yet again! This team has never been the same since losing Prust. They're tough to watch and easy to play against. This home stand is defining our season...we'll be out of the playoffs soon.
Where are all the whiners who got Torts fired? How is that working out? They bring back the Father's trip and everyone is happy but they are further away from the Cup
I don't even know where to start... Our personnel and our 4 coaches just can't figure out the recipe for success. Roughly 50% of the season done and all this team has shown is how gutless they are. Almost seems like they're OK losing, especially at home. Not sure if a shakeup will help but don't think can get much worse.
I would trade the next 100 years of first round picks for ovechkin. I was at the game tonight in DC. it's insane. He hits guys like an enforcer every shift. Fastest guy on the ice and when his shots hit the goalie it sounds like someone is cracking wood. I swear on the replays it looked like bishop was praying those pucks didnt hit him. All I heard is he's a dogshit cherry-picker, but no shot. he back checks better than any current ranger forward. Plays the game with such a snarl. He tied the game TWICE tonight. he teammates absolutely love him. If Kreider played on a line with ovechkin he'd be a 40 goal, 100 point guy. The guy OWNS the ice. So impressive live. Rangers haven't had a guy like that since Mess. **tear**
I too am Sad! I love my boyz and I'm no longer sure what can we do to stop the bleeding. Sather is not going anywhere and not sure what he is doing if anything! Now we've lost 2 key players and they show no heart because AV has no heart. All he does is stand behind that bench & chew the hell out of gum.
Its official.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4jGSvxCRp4
@johnnyb3910 Good for her for Sticking up for her father!! If the Ranger Players stuck up for one another maybe they wouldnt be in this mess
@johnnyb3910 I hated the whole Olympic thing at the beginning of the season but now am looking forward to seeing some passionate hockey. Suspect we will want a break from this team... Hate to say it but...
@AL55S I agree Brassard is a bust. Derek Dorsett can be a solid 4th line player, but as we've noted on here, he's being mis-used on this squad trying to play the role of enforcer. I think John Moore can be a good defenseman on this team, he's got good speed, good vision, just needs to work on playing the body more, and making better decisions. The postive is that if he continues to be up and down this season, Sather can probably resign him to a more cost-effective salary.
I competely agree on Ulf. I have no idea what he's doing besides calling out line changes at this point. Our defense has taken a major step back this season. I understand a lot is being asked of them, from being more aggresive and offensive and switching from zone to man, but in basic defensive situations, they're really struggling to just keep up with the play. Guys are constantly out of position, missing assignments, and leaving passing and shooting lanes wide open. I think the defensive scheme is something they're going to need to re-think at some point.
This will take longer than one off season to fix. We are not built like a tru good team. We have good players being paid superstarr salaries. Nothing can change that quickly in the capped NHL.
@Kevin DeLury And skill! Just kidding. It's about the balance of personnel around a solid vision (or system). All of these things are important, but every element needs to contribute to a consistent whole. A team is not its parts.
@Kevin DeLury And heart.
@BrianMineolaYo! Brian.....make my day. "Now I feel lucky."
I hear ya on that but I think we have a good nucleus of players to start with and some talent in Hartford coupled with a boatload of cash next year. All depends in how mgt plays this. It can turn around pretty quick with that formula. Since it's sather he'll trade the wrong players and sign the wrong ones as we'll.
