Newsday - McIlrath does well in his first fight
Nice article over at ESPN about Ryan McDonagh. Good recap of his entire career, with some interviews of coaches and scouts along the way. Amazing to read some of the quotes from Gordie Clark. I really thought he was a more "under-the-radar" kind of kid when Montreal traded him. Nope. Just a bunch of idiots up there.
Not to put a negative spin on this, but in the two games Staal and Cally have missed, I was really scratching my head at the decision to give the 3rd "A" to Nash and not McDonagh. Might show how little AV still knows about his leadership group...
McIlrath got to wear that hat! (Big smile)
Yeah..he lost the fight. But always..look a the positives. Mcilrath fought a guy...who's one of the better fighters in the league. McIlrath's inital clutch on the jersey was a little too weak and a little low and off center. Not a big deal. He'll get better. The positives in that fight. Kid can take a punch. He didn't drop to the ice( ala Boyle vs Chara). Also, McIlrath kept his head-up. A lot of guys...get hit in the face early in the fight...will drop the heads...and throw wildly. All that does is show weakness, afraid to get hit in the face. And it also opens you up to upper cuts and the dreaded "jersey over ya head beat down".
So, the kid can take a punch...and he ain't scared to take a punch. Now, its all about technique...which will come in time.
