Reports coming from Rangers practice seem to indicate that Dylan McIlrath will likely be a healthy scratch tomorrow night when the Rangers face the Penguins at MSG.
Steve Zipay at Newsday noted that McIlrath skated on the fourth defensive pair with Taylor Pyatt (the other probable scratch) leading most to believe he'll be in the press box.
AV indicated that he'll likely go back to dressing just six defensemen instead of the seven he used against Calgary Sunday night.
...i completely get AV's thinking here. The Penguins are a fast team, who would expose McIlrath's below average skating ability. But the Rangers finally showed some toughness against the Flames and now the Rangers head coach wants to omit the team's most physical player? One of these days he's going to learn that he's now coaching in the Eastern Conference where playing with an edge can defeat skill.
...to me, the only way to stop a guy as talented as Crosby is to bully him. I remember a few years ago, Mike Haley and the Islanders dismantled the Penguins by pummeling them from one end of the ice to the other. The Rangers don't have the talent to hang with the Penguins, so really the only way I can see them competing is to go all Charlestown Chiefs on Sid and the Pens, which will be that much harder if McIlrath is out of the lineup.
Meanwhile, Vigneault also announced that Henrik Lundqvist will get his seventh straight start.
...despite Lundqvist's struggles, no way can you throw Talbot into the lion's den against the Penguins.
Here were today's lines (via Bergen Record)...
Here's Vigneault's thoughts on his lineup...
“What I’m trying right now, is to find, whether it be duos or lines that have some chemistry,” Vigneault said. “In my opinion, we have one that seems to have a little bit of chemistry, that’s Kreids and Step (Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan). That being said though, Step went without for quite some time before getting a goal (10 games, snapped against the Flames). We’re looking for possible combinations and if I could keep them together, I would. I feel when players play together and you don’t mix and match there’s more of a sense of responsibility and more of a sense of trust that comes between teammates and if I could find lines that could perform consistently or offensively and defensively I would do that.
“The last game, I’ve got Benoit Pouliot, Dominic Moore and Derek Dorsett playing together and I’ve got 11 forwards and I’m mixing and matching and, all of a sudden, in the second and third period, Hags (Carl Hagelin) starts to play. He starts to handle the puck, he starts to move the puck protect the puck, use his speed and he goes up with Pouliot and Moore and they have that real good shift where they backcheck. They backcheck, they create offense and they score a goal. I try to keep them together for the most part after that, you saw a little spark, a little chemistry and if I can find that in some different guys, I would stay with it.”
...with the Callahan injury and the organization seemingly committed to keeping Miller/Kristo with the Wolfpack (at least for now), AV doesn't have much to work with so he's got his hands full trying to find lines that work.
...hopefully Poopsalot's recent resurgence helps add offensive depth to a lineup starving for some.
Anyone read the recent article " was firing Torts a mistake" I think this Canuck fan summed it up perfectly--exactly what is missing this year! Thanks Slats!
"As a Canuck fan I'll say this: this is a far cry from the AV Canucks. This team has an edge, a grit we didn't have with AV. The timeout Saturday after Boston's first goal? Never happens under Coach V
Off topic a bit, but didn't realize that the NYR currently only have one plus player (Kreider at +9). Wow.
Sit either Moore or DZ. I really enjoyed the fact that The Rangers played with a little chip on their shoulders last game and honestly believe it had to do with the fact they finally had some protection on the bench in the form of our resident pit bull McIlrath.
P.S. Livefyre can bite me
What ever. This team has to have hustle and fire.AV has to wake them up.I think thats on him.
AV talking about Hagelin: lol :If Hags gets out of his slump or lazy play or whatever, AV s going to realize he has a 2nd or 1st line player there. Deja vu.
I haven't called AV a f*ckin idiot yet but I'm close. Unless you got a big tough net clearing dman who can skate play him for christ sakes play him!
Should we assume Talbot plays Friday against the isles? Not understanding why he continues to sit on the back burner when the starter isn't exactly lighting it up.
@mando24179 I'll take fighting any day .. As for dumbasses like you who see a game ahead of you and probably never laced up a skate a day in your life , come on up to Canada , I live in Sherbrooke Quebec , shoot me a message when you get here and we'll see who has the vagina on an off the ice ;) .. As for your vocabulary it's all good just makes you sound stupid.. But then again, your comment was pretty stupid too..so come on up we'll test your hockey IQ ... Otherwise you STFU
My Christmas wish list:1. Get Richards off the point on the PP. He is much better coming off the boards2. Get rid of Pyatt, Poopalot and Boyle. Three cream puff stiffs.3. Encourage the defense to play tough in front of the goalie. Give a gift card to Applebees for most opponents knocked down in front of the crease.4. Would like to see PP unit of Zucc, Kreider, Nash, Mcdonagh and Stralman. 5. Second PP unit of Brassard, Richards, Hagelin, Girardi and John Moore.6. Someone please tell Lundqvist to stop playing so friggin deep in his net. He can't stop anthing from in close from where he is playing.7. Lastly, Would like to see someone stick up for Lundqvist when he gets hit in his crease and knock the offending player thru the glass.
Oh. and another thing......
Can anyone tell me what the identity of this club is? Anyone? I'll make it easy.....we don't have an identity...(except being known throughout the league as a SOFT team).
The Flames outhit us 30-23 on our home ice. Kreider and Zuccs both combined for 7 hits. So the rest of team combined for the 16 hits...riding a 4 game losing streak...at home no less....and you get outhit by the Flames.
Not only is that unacceptable...its just plain pathetic. When teams play us...they know in essence its a night-off...from a physical standpoint.
This needs to change quick, fast and in a hurry.
First off...let McIlrath play. You don't have to play him 25 minutes....give him 6-8 minutes. If he can hold his own and play well against the Pens...his confidence will skyrocket and the coaching staff will feel more comfortable playing him consistently. And give the kid a little reward for taking on McGrattan for his first fight. His teammates thought highly enough of it that they let McIlrath wear the hat after the game.....can the coaching staff show him a little love by giving him a start against the Pens??
People forget what a tough guy puts on the line when he drops the gloves...especially against someone with McGrattan's punching prowess. One big punch lands in the wrong place around the eye...and its goodbye orbital bone....and possibly your career. Just ask Brad Dalgarno.
Secondly, as soon as Haley is healed up and ready....get him up here asap. He's worked hard to improve his game. He's taken on a leadership role and is wearing the "A". He's worked hard enough on his faceoffs that Coach Gernander now has confidence to let him take important face-offs late in games. Haley is ready for PRIMETIME. He's faster than Asham...throws thunderous hits on the forecheck...and is a very good middleweight fighter.
Nothing personal against Asham...but he's 35 now. Haley is 27. It's time to make the switch. Then Rangers need as many bangers as they can get in the line-up. Hitting is infectious...playing tough is infectious.
Get it done please!!!
Normally I agree but this time I think AV is making the right move. Let the kid watch the game from the press box, watch and learn how a team like Pitt plays. Let him heal up after that fight for his first taste of rangers vs isles. Playing against Pitt can only hurt him at this point. If we were playing good as a team I'd say throw him in there but right now it's not a good idea.
I just saw AV in the post practice interview say he was going with 7 D. Wouldn't that mean McIlirath dresses for the game tomorrow?
I'm already counting the days until Veeno is gone and the Rangers get an old school coach in here.
You have to hit the Pens. You must be physical with them. A great example is last year's playoffs. Not many people gave the Isle's a chance....especially after taking a 5-0 shellacking in Game 1.
So, what did Coach Capuano do in Game 2? He benched Hickey who was arguably his best defenseman all year......and started the slow as molasses Matt Carkner on D. Why? He needed a more physical presence. Islander's won Game 2....4-3. Carkner's.. +/-...0
Carkner also Played in Game 3.....Isle's lost in overtime...5-4. Carkner's +/-...0.
Carkner also played in Game 4.....Isle's won....6-4. Carkner's +/-....0.
Games 5...Capuano benches Carkner. Isle's lose big...4-0.
Game 6...Carkner re-inserted into line-up.....Isle's lose yet another heart breaker in OT....4-3. Carkner's +/-..0.
The point is simple.....you can play a rugged, physical and slow skating defenseman against the Pen's and be successful. Carkner's presence help the Isle's in that series....it did not hurt them.
@shoot_the_goalieyeah man - and that's only because he was in the minors for that epic disaster known as the season opening road trip
@SpazzBrownI've been e-mailing with Livefyre, apparently they just released a new editor and there have been a few bugs which they've been working on. I'm pretty much arguing with them every day.
why should a coach have to get up his team of professional hockey players that play for new york city and are making MILLIONS to do what they love….just that notion of needing someone to get them up for a game especially at home is sickening
i don't know….throwing mcillrath in against crosby and the penguins can potentially ruin his confidence and development in one game, ya know?
@ATCRyanHe had one bad game and he sits forever. Season's still pretty young and maybe there's some savvy and guts I haven't seen yet but so far AV embarrasses me
Lmaoo. An inter blog tough guy lmaoooo and come see me. I guess I hit a nerve as far as hockey I probably played more than u did lmao. Here is a clue STFU u non having a team in Quebec french maricone.... here is an IQ Have team in ur town and support them smh at this dudley dooritie mofo. Calling people out on the internet..... who looks stupid now
Go play at winter fest an STFU with ur pansy threats. Next time STFU and u won't get smashed and made a fool of.
U don't like my response. STFU and don't read it... The end
wanna be tough guy....only a vagina cries once a month. I guess its that time of the month for u....stay useless and quiet pendejo....stop making tough guy threats...Cause no one threatened u over here lmaoooo I just dissed u like a common village idiot... for talking out the side of ur mouth... like Quebec means some shit to anyone...
hank should just also stop playing the puck altogether. it almost ALWAYS leads to an opposing scoring chance. i'd switch zucc and richards at the point.
@McPhee37Identity of this club? they have no identity. nothing flattering anyway. Honestly I thought you left the board because this team sucks lol (so happy you're OK). Agree with everything you say. I'm absolutely dismayed by the decision to sit the Undertaker. Terrible. This coach has no guts from what I see. Refuses to take a chance with the young guys, or a risk period. The only way to succeed in Hockey as well as life is to take appropriate risks. this young guy literally risked his career and even his life to fire up this team - yeah I know McGrattan took it easy on him and yada yada but that took balls. Then you're going to bench him the next game??? I think the Gods brought AV here to make me appreciate Torts lol. At least he has a pair! Agree about Haley - he's a nasty fuck and this team needs nasty fucks.
I would love to see Haley on this team. Haley would be a great fit. Which is exactly why he won't be brought up. how much better would Haley look up here than Pyatt?
@KreiderisTheChosenOnec'mon, do you think a 3rd pairing is even going to see Crosby?
Just like you were bashing Haley....last year....which you were wrong to do by the way....nothing has changed. Maybe one of these days Wrath will be in the line-up....and someone will take a run at Chrissy Kreider...you know...like Oprik cleaned his clock last year. And when Wrath either pays back the player the hits Oprik...or retaliates violently against someone else for the hit.....you will be all over McIlrath's jockstrap...praising him for standing up for your boy.
I forgot....Kreider got payback against Oprik right? 6'3...230lbs....and he doesn't drop the gloves to retaliate for the hit next time we played him?? Or all the times people took runs at our guys last year and this year? Has he dropped the gloves once yet? And don't tell me he's a guy who can't fight. Can't lives on won't street my friend.
Maybe we wouldn't have to call up a guy like McIlrath if guys like Kreider would actually play like a guy who's testicles have dropped.
@papas1175 maybe you have a point, but still want to see him out there
@grosselkI didn't see interview, but beat writers were reporting AV was thinking about going back to 6 defensemen.
I agree but carkner is some what of a vet. Throwing the rookie in with how were playing doesn't increase our chances to win.
@PacNYR44@Betweentheworldscertainly that is a consideration and probably AV's thinking. But this is not the boys league anymore, he's a man, and a warrior at that and if failure against the Pens is going to ruin him he's not NHL material. Best to know that now. Trial by fire. It's a tough league. A fight against McGrattan could have much more easily ruined his confidence then a dance with Sid the Infant - (as well as his smile) but even though he lost the fight he won the challenge and he emerged more confident. I say keep it rolling. Builds character. .Besides a 3rd pairing doesn't even see Crosby anyway.
As usual Worlds....you and i are in agreement. Nah...i love this board...just some health issues had to figure out.
Not only do i start Wrath ....I give him permission to take a vicious run at Crosby. Worst case scenario...he misses the hit...maybe a goal is scored.....but the message will have been sent. Not only are we not scared of Crosby....but we're gunning for him.
And yes...sadly our identity is that we are a SOFT team. ;(
Yes Papas....I agree. but he has to learn sometime right? Do it now...so you see how the kid handles it.
Your both right. They should have enough about themselves to play right. But obviously something is not happening with them.No desperation.Laziness.Torts ragged them. But AV is distant.Don't trust this team-they'll let you down-garanteed.Using Hags as an example-always a go getter and puck hawk-now-except for last game-meh ok.That's unusual and it shows that some players are not finding the game within themselves . Theres a lot of players like that on this team right now.Only 4 or 5 are doing what you say and playing like they should.
Yes...you're right he would most likely not even see Crosby's line.
That's why i would have McIlrath out there...for the opening face-off. Forget about playing defense....your sole mission....search and destroy. Find him...line him up...Kaspartits style....and come flying from half way across to rink to blow him up. Even if he misses...the Pens will take exception...hopefully lose their cool....and focus on McIlrath the entire game :)
@McPhee37@KreiderisTheChosenOne Crosby can absolutely freeze the defense , the only other guy I ever saw that does it like that wore #99. He's no wilting violet either, seen him play pretty nasty as well but he's a whiny bitch and you can get him off his game. Honestly even if Wrath suited up doubt he even sniffs the Crosby line, but like your idea George and I'm gonna call my peeps and get AV fired and get you in teir for the coaching job.
Yeah Josh....Crosby can undress a ton of dmen in this league.....
You do what the Islanders did in the playoffs last year...Coach Cap learned after Game 1....get physical with Crosby and the Pens.
And you just don't check him...you take runs at him...and not just him but every other skilled player they have. Get under his skin.
Sure, Crosby could skate circle around Wrath....have Crosby go to get a puck in a corner in our end with Wrath coming from behind...you know who wins that battle right? Have Crosby stand in front of the net for too long....and let McIlrath crack him in his back with his stick.
As a matter of fact...If I'm Veeno, I give Wrath the green light. I tell him....
""" Hey Wrath....you know that hit you just missed on in your first game? Well, I want you to try it again. I'm going to make sure you're on the ice with Crosby on his first shift. And I want you to take a charge....and I want you to try to line Crosby up.....and knock him into next week. I'm giving you the ok to blow him up"""
Even if he misses on the hit....the message is clear to Crosby and the Pens..."Yep...it's going to be a long game....because we're gunning for Crosby.""
Intimidation can go a long way sometimes.....:)
