Talk about a roller coaster of emotions there. Rangers grab 2-0 lead, blow said lead. Devils score go-ahead goal late in the third, Kreider ties it with 22 seconds left on the power play that was basically listless for most of the night, only to lose in OT after a careless Callahan high stick led to the Devils winning 13 seconds later. Tough way to lose, especially with tonight's game being Brodeur's last in all likelihood at MSG. Hopefully the Rangers didn't give him any gifts a la Mariano Rivera.
Some good to take away; Richards beat a badly out of position Brodeur to take a 1-0 lead early in the first. He's been quietly putting together a nice point scoring streak that he extended to six tonight.
Zuccarello ran the lead to 2-0 following a Callahan shot and long rebound that Zucc one-timed on net that Marty had absolutely no chance at stopping.
If JT Miller plays every game the way he did tonight, he isn't going back to Hartford either. His 2 shots were pretty good opportunities that eventually will wind up in the back of the net for him. Also helps playing with skill guys and not Pouliot and Pyatt. I found myself saying "that was a good shift by the third line." for the first time all season.
To the bad... I'm sure you guys are going to have a field day with the Cam Janssen kick, which should be a no-goal in my opinion. The video graphic MSG showed on Miller's no goal against Philly and Galchenyuk's goal against the Rangers is proof positive that the rule needs a desperate re-write. Just no consistency from game to game. The worst thing to come from that? The Devils got momentum and the Rangers never got it back.
The Rangers continued growing pains on defense on full display once again. Boyle abandoned his man (Zajac) and left him alone to tie the game. The Rangers have had 30 games to get these issues straightened out. They're running out of time and excuses.
A couple more Ranger mistakes led to Ryder's goal with 4 minutes left in the third. First, Stralman fails to get the puck deep on the NJ blueline, the turnover eventually found Ryder, who turned John Moore inside out on the Ranger blueline after a weak poke check and Ryder's wrister trickles through Lundqvist's legs.
Don't expect anything to come from Shanahan on Reid Boucher's shoulder-to-chin hit on Staal. Vigneault told reporters post-game that Staal, "didn't feel quite right." Staal will be re-evaluated tomorrow, but it wouldn't shock me if he doesn't play against Washington Sunday night.

I can't imagine being a Devils fan, sitting through 80+ games a year like that. It's really like the Game Plan they preach is:
1st Period - Do as little as possible, don't waste your energy. Be dull, be unexciting. Don't let then lead by more than a goal or two.
2nd Period - Bore them to death. Maybe score a goal, but get the opponent to spend the 2nd intermission saying things like "just keep doing what we're doing"
3rd period - Play 20 minutes of hockey. Still relatively boring, lets just get this to overtime, at least get a point, then all we have to do is play 5 more minutes of hockey for the win.
It's painful to watch, and even more painful to lose to...
I hope people are not putting this loss soley on Callahan, his efforts in front of the net, to get the puck to Kreider, which if you look at the replay hit his stick and Kreider was then able to bury it. He also had 2 primary assists last night. Yeah was a dumb penalty and unlike him but it happens. He had an overall good game, 5 hits, + 2 rating, and 2 points. Lundqvist was just terrible, so was the defense for parts of this game.
all refs miss calls for n against us, its just part of the game, that dont bother me, im more pissed about the lack of response on our team after our guys get hit like that, its been a common theme for us for years, there was none under torts, who preached team toughness, and its only goin 2 get worse with this creampuff coach, besides our lack tough physical players, how many more concussed players are we goin 2 have b4 the organization addresses this??
Who did you expect to step up for the Staal hit? Boyle?!? Falk??? Neither of these two can fight! Nobody on this team can fight with the exception of our middleweight Dorsett.
Even with the League doing their best last night to screw it up for us, still our greatest flaws were exposed, We do not play physical enough especially in our own zone. We are giving goals that Hank should stop. Slats has not done a thing to bring in an enforcer to protect and the key word is protect our best players. Unless some moves are make we may not make the playoffs. Jagr is forty-whatever and no attempt was made to knock him off the puck on Devils' go ahead goal last night.
This team has no grit. None. And don't try and tell me otherwise. So Staal is supposedly concussed. Now comes Del-Zaster. It's the same old story.
derrick brassard is a lazy bastard. and if you watch the devils 3rd goal, its more stepans fault than it is moore's. they are the softest team in the league. no hitting. no effort. no hustle. its disgusting. get rid of del zotto, boyle, and brassard, they are terrible.
Did anyone else notice how much Staal got his eggs scrambled on the first big hit into the corner boards that caught his head? The camera zoomed into him on the bench and he looked like he was drunk. He tried to put his mouthpiece into his glove and missed it by a foot then dropped it on the floor. I have a really bad feeling about this. I hope I am wrong and he has a speedy recovery.
A POINT! It shouldn't have even went into overtime. It has been a while since I watched a game and became that infuriated. That pissed me off so much I went right to bed after the game after cursing our each referee and employee in Toronto one by one. No consistency which leads me to believe its being done on purpose to the New York Rangers.
Always a big Moore fan but how the hell does he just waltz by you, I'm starting to believe this team is just way too soft.
Going to address this now and will probably take a lot of heat for it...
Listen I hate the Bruins as much as the next guy, but I can't tell you how much I respect what Shawn Thorton was trying to do.... He didn't do it to the right guy, and may have taken it too far... But he is going to get at most a 10-15 game suspension... You know what Fuck it. That guy took a blatant cheap shot on Marchand. The Bruins while they may not be the best team "talent-wise" are the best "TEAM"... Man what I would do to root for a team like that, we had it in 2011-2012. And guess what they won the hockey game.
HENRIK LUNDQVIST, CAM TALBOT
MATS ZUCCARELLO, DEREK STEPAN, CARL HAGELIN, CHRIS KREIDER, RICK NASH, J.T. MILLER, DERICK BRASSARD, DEREK DORSETT, RYAN CALLAHAN, KYLE BEACH, JESPER FAST
DYLAN MCILRATH, ANTON STRALMAN, RYAN MCDONAGH, JUSTIN FALK
Dion Phaneuf, Kyle Quincey
Re-watching the game just now and watching the tie up goal and does anyone remember how excited Torts would get from a goal like that, watch AV literally ZERO reaction. I get he is a good coach I hate seeing zero passion about this team ( from the coach ) --well other than calling out players which never leads to good things.
Was at the game and have not heard the garden that crazy all season how do you not take advantage of this home ice sub 500 at home unacceptable
I said it on Twitter. I hate the rule but that was not a distinct kicking motion. Did he redirect it in? Yes. Was there a full kicking motion? Not even close.
If you look at the Miller non-goal in Philly, his leg swung back before it came forward. Janssen's did not.
Rule needs to be changed. Can't be left up to interpretation. Leaves it open for inconsistencies.
Absolutely disgusting that no one came to Staal's aid tonight. I don't care if the hit was legal or that it was a tie game. You never allow a player who's had a series of concussions to be hit like that without a response. Ever.
Staal hit was battle for puck- once again long as you wear Rangers sweater, u will never get a call. Word is Staal has concussion, so we can shut the Trade DZ rumors!
The 4th line just awful, Boyle seems out of it since he beat those guys with his face and I am not wasting any words on Pyatt. Listen I love a skill, speed game but I am sorry you need a some physical presence albeit skilled in today's game especially in tight games to make some room. Kreider and Miller shouldn't be the ones to set the example. This is a glaring problem since last season. WTF is going on in management's head. I mean Patrik Elias is putting guys in headlocks and taking swings at guys and you have 4th lines guys who either can't play, can't skate, can't fight and only people they scare are their own fans com on
On another note the Pens and Bruins sure deserve each other, two class acts.
Even though Jersey is a top rival I do t care if I miss the games against for that reason. Jersey is a boring team to watch. Always has been
Ranger fans can be funny. He's obviously playing hurt. He's been a hero for how long? Then a few mediocre games and everyone wants to throw him under the bus
@KreiderisTheChosenOne I hate Orpik, but hope he's OK. bottom line these are just probably a bunch of decent dudes out there, doing their overpaid job. As for the suspension, i think you may be way off. I see this as a borderlin Bertuzzi / Moore incident, that could be a monster suspension and who knows what else. Alot depends on how Orpik is as well.
@SpazzBrown Oscar Lindberg will be on the team next year as will Connor Allen and Danny Kristo
@Vkinc74 You completely missed his reaction; He chewed his gum faster.
@Kevin DeLury Those reverse hits are a lot more dangerous than people realize. Staal was defenseless and unsuspecting. I don't see how it could be legal when Staal didn't have the puck. It's something the NHL should start looking into. Then again, they claim to worry about head shots, but only slap wrists when they actually occur. Someone should have stuck up for Staal. Someone should have confronted Elias for all the crap he pulled. I don't even like fighting in hockey, but the refs and the league let these things pass to make the game more exciting and to make more money. Hockey shouldn't be a bloodsport but that's how the NHL wants it. Put McIlrath on a fourth-line wing and let him protect the team.
@Kevin DeLury Kevin... when are you going to learn... that is the status quo. New York Rangers = No Goal Scoring and Pussies that don't stand up for their teammates. It is shameful to watch... the Rangers are premadonnas. You are what your captain is... and when Callahan was a tough mofo that would do anything to win, so were the Rangers. This season Cally has turned into another Premadonna Ranger (a la Chris Drury) and his teammates have followed suit. Besides Mcdonagh, Kreider, and Zuccs there is no passion, heart or intensity..... These guys get to play the BEST SPORT in the World, in the BEST CITY in the World, for millions of dollars, and play like they dont even care. It makes me incredibly sad to see what has happened to Callahan.... Like watching Jeter break his ankle in the playoffs two years ago and have to be carried off the field... difference is Jeter had to be dragged off the field, and Cally is just floating into limbo
@DaveFL Have to say though... Dorsett is the key for the 4th line
@DaveFL I agree dont waste anymore on Pilon, worthless
It's getting annoying with that. Yeah he is not playing great, he has had multiple injuries to deal with. Last night he has 2 primary assists, including one on the game tying goal, 5 hits, and a + 2 rating, yet he is awful? What about Lundqvist? He gave up 4 goals on 24 shots, not Lundqvist-like. You can go up and down this roster, and Cally falls on the bottom of whats wrong with this team. Plus 4 points in 5 games, he is starting to find his offense again.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Yea, great move… went after the guy that didn't knee Marchand in the head. He went after the guy that hit Eriksson hard and clean… And had to slew foot him and punch his head into the ice… real stand up guy
I am with you on all your points except Cally.....the dude is playing hurt.....no question. Your Pussy Points are totally on the money. We will never get past the Bruins or even The Pens if we don't find more toughness in our top 3 centers. Step and Richards and Boyle are totally ineffective 5 on 5, against physically tough teams. Soft centers have a way of spreading their softness to their line mates. Just as soft passionless coaches have a way of weaving their soft passionless ways into "a team identity."
AV got the boot from the Canucks because the Blues, SJ, Kings, Ducks were moving to a more physical, defensive, shot-blocking game. Canucks management said "No Mas."
Callahan is the least of their concerns right now. 5 hits last night, 2 assists, is not leading by example? Yeah he took a careless penalty, it happens.
A lot of heart and can play some but they need to add a bigger version at least to protect Boyle and Nash
Great points. And the 5 hits suggest he's getting healthier. And even hurt he's still in front of the net paying the price. Since the crease seems to be forbidden ground for just about every other Ranger Imsurprised at the comments lately and that people don't see that.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne lets face it we are rebuilding again. Its going to be 2-3 yrs before we are ready
@SpazzBrown yea but if you think that lineup is winning a cup against teams like Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, San Jose, etc.... you're high
