Listen there is still plenty wrong with this team, but I've been very encouraged with the third period fight I've seen from the Rangers the last two games.
Immediately after the Brandon Sutter goal gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead, the Rangers sagged and I thought for sure the game was over as has been the case so often this season.
Thankfully, since the Rangers receive zero inspiration from their head coach, Marc-Andre Fleury gave them a Christmas gift in the form of a misplayed harmless John Moore wrist shot and the comeback was on.
Here's some Rangers reaction (via Bergen Record)...
“I think it’s great that we come back with two straight goals in two straight games. At the same time, maybe it would be nice to grab a lead. A lot of character was shown and we got some traction, some bite, some pushback in our game. But it would be nice to have control in the third period.”
“We showed character again. We’ve been down the last couple of games, but any time you’re down two goals and you get a point, it’s huge.”
“We were in a tough spot. But we kept fighting and that’s a good sign. Things haven’t gone our way the last few weeks, but all we can do is fight and work as hard as we can and stay together here and hopefully things turn around. I feel like the last two games, we’re making progress.”
...i'm not naive to think the Rangers still win that game without Fleury's momentum swinging gaffe, but they still needed to take advantage of the opportunity handed to them and I've been impressed with the resiliency this team has shown recently, which is very reminiscent of what we saw in 2011-12.
...now I'm not ready to say the Rangers have turned a corner but comebacks such as these are huge confidence builders for a team struggling mentally and looking to forge an identity.
...i also think having the team taste a little success due to hard work can have a real positive influence on their mindset, which will hopefully lead to more passion and emotion in their game going forward. And God knows they need it because it's no secret that AV is not motivating these guys right now.
They have shown some fight lately but have shown too many weaknesses at this point in the season .If they regress again -Here's the change: There's a few problems with this team. The roster problems are easiest to fix but they have to be recognized.1.The bad players have to go.be traded sent down whatever.2.Quality new players have to be brought in to replace at least the level or better of the bad players.Up from Hartford or elsewhere.3 the "OK" players who aren't playing brilliantly have to be let go or traded-they are doing more damage than appears.Replace with quality prospects or 1st round or 2nd round picks. The other major problems on this team are motivation, and management.Problems not easy to fix- Unless Dolan asks Sather to retire.
A comeback is when you take the lead. It was not a comeback, but I love that we got a point. There are still glaring holes with this team that barely beat the Wilksberry AHL team + Sidney. Mainly how bad Michael Del Zotto is... Maybe the worst dman in the NHL.
There are only four things wrong with the Rangers: The owner, who doesn't care enough to hold the GM accountable. The GM, who refuses to retire because of his enormous ego and belief that he is the dean of GMs in the NHL.The coach, whose team is the exact reflection of himself: passive and passionless. And the team itself, minus 3 or 4 players.Other than that, we're fine.
Enough with the bs of moral victories and hopefully turning things around. Management needs to get a clue and face reality ... this group of players will not win ANYTHING! Outside of a few, no scoring touch, no passing skills, no grit, no heart, no fight, no pride. Great .. they came back in the last 2 games. Does anyone think the way this roster is constructed, this team will win the cup??? Save you breath ... NO! And I'm not just talking about the NHL roster. Why is it that all I ever hear is so and so needs time to develop? Enough ... get the right people in place to draft the right players for today's NHL. People talk about having an enforcer. I tend to disagree with this but only if you have a team of hard-nosed players that hit, have heart, are tough to play against and can/are willing to drop the gloves to defend teammates and send the other teams a message that the next 60 minutes of your lives will NOT be fun. What am I saying??? Time to re-shape this roster. Only players I would not consider moving are Hank, Kreider, Mac and Zucc. I'm sick of watching the SOFT play of Stepan, Richards, Nash, Girardi and Hagelin. I'm sick of watching Boyle fall to ice twice every shift. Sorry ... I can probably name 10 defensive minded centers in the league I'd rather have that are average on faceoffs and will score more than this waste of a roster spot. I'm sick of watching MDZ be out of position time and time again. Hey AV, here's a slap of reality ... McIlrath could have given up the center of the ice last night just as well as MDZ. He also could have been grossly out of position on the PK. But here's the difference .. At least McIlrath might improve. MDZ keeps getting worse. Also .. replace MDZ with Falk in my previous statement. Same applies. Great move to have Asham in the lineup and not play him. Asham is done .. everyone can see it. Mashinter could have done the same before he was traded and probably provide the MSG with more energy. I love how Dorsett plays. Plays hard. I like J. Moore and Brassard. They both play with a semblance of grit. With that said .. they are up for sale if the right offer came along. All this leads me to the final point ... Hey Sather ... you are the REAL problem. You have ZERO skill in building a team to succeed for the long run. Can you pull a magical trade from time to time? Sure ... but a blind squirrel will find a nut too sometimes. You are a pathetic excuse for a GM. You are the Matt Millen of hockey! Go away .. far away ... go to a tobacco plant and stay there with your cigars. Show some class and step down so a younger GM can come in with fresh ideas and know-how in building a team/organization to win in today's NHL. I love the NYR and always will but I'm disgusted by the product you have put on the ice and the fact you are still the GM. The only person smiling is Torts with a big FU to the Rangers organization.
Sorry for the long rant boys but I had to blow off some steam .... Now I hope we somehow go out and beat the sh*t out of the Islanders tomorrow night! LGR!
Comes alive when u have to be a realist..... This isn't working nor will it work..... for the lost part this is a young in ur prime team that almost made it to the Stanley Cup couple urs back.....
Phylogeny doesn't match the personal.....coach probably already lost locker room. ... leadership from players isn't there and it can be from many things
Coaching mm is take can be handled very simply....and from a professional view. This guy has no clue..... u don't start accessing ur team by the 32 game...... that's done in camp.... what u do is tweak the team and round it out... so when trade deadline comes if u need u can go get what u need.....
AV is clueless. ...Only thing consistent is him chewing gum
Hopefully, the Rangers pull off a DelZotto for Franson trade before the deadline to get things moving and give this team a wake-up call that a major house cleaning is on the horizon.
One thing i did like last night was 67 playing with hags, think hags pace makes him skate faster play more up tempo. As we know Pouliot wreaks of skill but just cant put it all together, hags helps. And theres no doubting Pouliot has picked up his game the past 4/5 games...Shown more heart in the past two games than the rest of the season so while I hate falling short, I think it's good for the team and their confidence to show those gonads....
What I can't fathom us why noone is stepping up & taking a leadership role in Cally's absence. Where's Nash? Richards? For the $$ they make they oughta show some passion!
I thought about commenting with something logical but I get a feeling that's not exactly something that'll be accepted right now.
Soo frustrating.. Seriously, what's up with AV? Why can't he get in there and motivate? It's not his style, I get that, but when your team is as flat as the Rangers have been, doesn't it piss him off? Can't he just say "listen, get your shit together or you won't be on this roster"? he seems so resistant of that from the outside looking in. Great points, by the way. I think they built their identity last time by being resilient. Maybe it can creep back in.
No offense Kev (and NY rangers ba dump bump)What are they going to say?Dan Girardi " We suck and don't show up till its too late. and by the way I am a big fucking Pussy and miss Torts.come on PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE
Good points. Was thinking the same things. Though the players need to find the passion and desire from within the coach needs to foster that and add cohesiveness. I'm just concerned that this coach is not capable of that. torts, for all my griping was. In spite of all the comments lately we have the makings of a good team if and when we show character, and with 2 or 3 smart trades we could be a cup competitive team but that non-tangible part of the game, chemistry is not there. Hope this comeback win against the undermanned but still dangerous Penguins will be a start.
How many wussies do you want on this team?
@AG_Blue Funny that no one mention the fact that The Rangers could not convert on a 5 on 3 against a predominantly AHL. team. They should have blown this team clear out of the Garden. Possible contenders? what a joke. It will be a miracle if they sneak into the final playoff spot, then one and out. What a disgrace this team is..Can't believe that some people on this blog are still optimistic about them. I had more fun watching paint dry then watching this team ply pond hockey.
Girardi is on crack to make a statement like that.....
It's blind denial... lmao@ we had bite. I guess he pulled out his false teeth. Nickname gumby
@TruBluEsp Great post truebluesp ,I couldn't have said it better myself. Agree with every word you wrote. GOOD JOB!!!!!!
@TruBluEspCouldn't have said it better myself. Same way I feel although I do feel Haglein is a special kind of roll player developing. Hard to find that type of speed/accel. Bring up Miller, Kristo, Lindberg, Fast and keep MacIlrath playing. Get them use to the speed. Bring them up a few at a time. Get their confidence up and let them realize they can keep up with NHL caliber players with a little time and adjustment. Pyatt, Pouliot, Asham, others not mentioned can stay in the rafters. We are in the worst conference/division in the NHL. We are going NO WHERE!! Hank= bad signing but I will not even go there. Get the kids up and plan for next year. Its not the coaching as we found out, its the shitty roster being thrown out there every night. Can't change that now but you can still develop the kids and not worry about where Pouliot should float to next on the ice.....
I also think trading Dubi was a very bad move... He had that sparkle of graves in him....
@SATHER GOTTA GOWhy get rid of AV. We keep blaming coaches but Vancouver is the hottest team in the west right now. Its the guys on the roster where the problem lies.
ts Torts.... Its AV.... Its time to put blame on this lackluster roster.....
Think AV gets fired after this home stand. 1-3-2?! not acceptable
@Bring back LangdonC'mon man. I got to find some positives around here. Some of us are another lose away from slitting out wrists.
@Kevin DeLury@JoshKayeSome logical questions at least ........how under a severe Cap system do The Rangers sign a super elite Goaltender for 8.2 M per.........have a superior top 4 defensive unit.......play a defense first strategy that almost takes them to SC finals.....and then watch California teams and St. Louis getting more powerful shifting to hard-nose defense first teams......see in their own ConferenceThe Bruins continually successful with a hard-nose defense first sytem together with a top-ranked goalie...... and decide we, The Rangers, are going to go in the opposite open offense first direction with the Big Club and also with The Farm System??????
I welcome all responses.
They're having enough trouble selling out the place in the first half of the season. I was at the 2 games last week vs NSH & CBJ. MSG may be filled with all new things but the crowd is pathetic. Not enough real fans or passion for that matter. Probably part of the reason the team is so lethargic.
