With the Rangers not practicing today, there's not much news to report, so I figured I stir you guys up into a frenzy by posting another Michael Del Zotto rumor.
According to uncle Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun, Avalanche GM Joe Sakic has been scouring the market looking for a blueliner and are believed to be interested in Michael Del Zotto.
The Avs, however, are not equiped with a top four defenseman which the Rangers are demanding in return for any package involving Del Zotto.
...i wonder what kind of effect the development of McIlrath will have on the Rangers asking price for Del Zotto. If the 21-year old becomes a dependable option for Vigneault, while the offense continues to struggle, you have to think Sather might soften on his stance of a top defenseman in return.
...and if he does, Paul Stastny needs to be the guy Sather targets from the Avalanche. Stastny is in the final year of his contract ($6.6M per) and has not begun talks with the Avalanche about a possible extension as Colorado management are still deciding whether to re-sign the talented center or trade him for assets. Sounds like the Avalanche are in the same position the Rangers were in with Lundqvist.
...while prying Stastny away from the Avalanche will likely take more than Del Zotto (Miller or a first round pick?), he is a bonafide #1 center who'd strengthen the Rangers up the middle by dropping Stepan down to where he should be as a second line center and Brassard to the third line. The Rangers don't have the cap space for Stastny now, but Sather might be able to take advantage of Sakic at the trade deadline when the Avalanche might be forced to deal Stastny if they don't think they can re-sign him during the offseason.
I just find it funny that Sather is said to be demanding a top 4 defenseman for Del Zotto. That doesn't strike anyone else as odd?
This is a great opportunity for the Rangers to acquire one of the premier first line centers in the NHL, and I don't mean Stastny. If the teams could hold off till Feb., then Ryan O'Reilly is then available to be traded. So... DelZotto + Stepan could net us the first line center the Rangers are lacking. A line of Krieder, O'Reilly, and Nash would be promising. But I don't expect this to happen... makes too much sense.
It would be stupid to trade a first round pick in a year we should be accumulating good picks and prospects for our own UFA's and recycling .We either start to win soon and get to the cup with this team or rebuild.
I personally would pass on trading for any UFAs this year. Let's be realistic. The NYR are doubtful Cup contenders, and need to rebuild somewhat due to all the expiring contracts. Getting rental players for this year's team could blow up in their faces and stifle growth for a bunch of years.
I would pass on stastny, to fragile and wluld cost a lot for potential rental.. I was thinking something, i know Kevin loves Gordie Clark but look at our prospect pool right now. No one has cracked the NHL roster in 2 years except Kreider who is still finding his game. When i look at other teams, they all somehow discover NHL ready talent. I know Sather throws out every 1st round pick in the last couple of years but we need better scouting. i feel like we are waiting every year for some kid to develop into a great player but that never comes.
We don't need any trades, JD has to supply each player but goalie with couple shots of hood cognac for players feeling fun and the bravery during the game, repeat it in a between periods. This will work :D
I mostly read posts on this site saying Rangers need to add toughness, grit, etc ... They are too easy to play against. They are too soft. So the answer is to trade MDZ for Stastny who could be as soft as Stepan???? I'm all for trading MDZ but if they trade for skill it better be for a goal scorer, not another soft, playmaker OR a gritty, big forward that hits and can score 20 a year.
Just saying we could probably get heatly really cheap right now. Like DZ and a second if we had cap space.
Time to move MDZ. He's had plenty of opportunity and has shown very little overall. I had high hopes for him, but he continues to disappoint.
As someone living in Denver and watches a fair bit of Avalanche hockey, I wouldn't want Stastny. Yet another soft, pass-first player which is something the Rangers are not in need of. They need a sniper and finisher, not a playmaker, and definitely not a used plug/patch-pass-first play-making-center. But that's just me.
@Say my Name I think it's like when you start haggling with someone and the first number they throw out there is astronomical, just to get your reaction.
How is O'Reilly a 'premier' center? 10 goals 10 assists so far this year. Only 6 goals last year and in best season only scored 18. Compare that to Stepan and would rather have Stepan as soft as he is.
my only gripe with this proposal is trading Stepan. I get that we need a better top line center, but we cant keep trading away all of our home growns
Not sure I would consider Ryan O'Reilly a premier first line NHL center. He's good but not elite. With that said, would love to have him but he's not going anywhere IMHO. Alternative is to make a run at Joe Thornton (if he hits the open market as a UFA) since he has proven chemistry with Nash and still has a few top level years left. think JT will be looking for too much money at too many years though, but if they buyout Richie, and can get JT for 4 yrs at 7.5-8m, I would be down with it.
@MikeBlue Yes and to much sense is not the rangers way.
@teemuNYR Not if its for Kane.
Well, in fairness to the NYR, it's not like they're getting high 1st round draft picks, which are the players who tend to "stick" in the NHL. And usually it's only top 2-3 in any given draft that are players you can build a team around. (franchise players) NYR have tended to pick in high teens and those don't even end up being sure fire NHLers.
Sure, we could put him, Brassard and Pouliot on a line and call it the Lowered Expectations line!
Duchene then ;-)
@AndyS Thanks for the scouting report. Obviously, I don't watch the guy on a nightly basis, so your insight is appreciated.
I think there's a Candian law in place now that forbids Montreal GMs from doing any kind of trades with the NY Rangers. It's calle the McDonagh Accord.
@nyr sec225 Do they want McDonagh back?
@nyr sec225Nope. Have you?
@gravey94 LELz line
I wouldn't trade Mcdonagh for anyone in the league besides maybe Towes but that's just me. He should have the C on his chest too.
From what I hear, Jessiman getting hurt, and also being a big guy who couldn't skate well, couldn't hack it in the NHL after the 2005 rule changes. Jessiman was definitely drafted for the "clutch & grab" era. Still, poor draft choice in such a deep and talent draft pool Possibly one of the best draft pools in NHL history.
So was Brad Richards.
I think I might give up Kreider for Duchene, but it's only a pipe dream regardless
Come on. You wouldn't take your boy Crosby straight up for McD?
I meant that tongue firmly planted in check.
I'd be surprised if the Habs EVER made a deal with the Rangers again after that fiasco.
no I made a sarcastic remark as to our last trade with them and walhlah this shows up. but its eklund take it with a grain of salt, hes right 1% of the time, just hope its this t
@Bring back Langdon dude are you serious — is this for real?
