John Tortorella was ultimately tuned out because the Rangers players found him to be over-baring and maniacal in his ways.
So, Glen Sather sent him packing and brought in a new coach who is the polar opposite with his hands off approach and his philosophy of self responsibility.
Here's an unnamed player on AV's coaching style (via New York Post)...
“He says what he says and then expects you to figure it out.”
...wow, so much for the coach being the teacher. I get that these are grown men who are ultimately responsible for learning AV's system on their own, but you'd think a new coach trying to install a new scheme might want to utilize practice as well as the video room to dissect any blunders with the guys individually instead of just addressing it orally and hoping the player properly understands it before breaking down the tape on their own. Most people, myself included, are visual learners and may need a real remedial walk through on the ice of what went wrong and how to rectify it before they're able to fully grasp the nuances of the situation.
...this statement along with others further proves AV's detached style of coaching, which, up until this point, the Rangers players are having difficulties adjusting to.
...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this Rangers team is still very uncomfortable and almost confused in this new, fast paced offense. I'm still convinced, when healthy, the Rangers have the personnel to succeed under AV. So, maybe instead of changing to a more defensive system, AV should think about adjusting his coaching method to a style more conducive to the learning needs of his current team.
A professional embarassment,,,,a colossal professional embarassment that permeates an ultra conservative organization called the NHL.
Could you imagine a Fortune 500 company hiring a guy like this to run their sales force? Keep in mind the sales force is the only team that generates revenue(Wins) for the entire organization.....no revenue and everybody goes home and this dribble takes place in the greatest City in the World.....a colossal embarassment.
Maybe I'm confused, he did sign up for the head coaching position???
I think this hands off approach is BS. I'm not in the locker room or at practices but from what you are writing he's not acting as a head coach
This team is the Dallas Cowboys of hockey they have a few big names and can not play a complete gamehank is RomoNash is Dezand Sather and Dollan is Jerry rolled up into !In other words the suck as a team and management is even worse living on past achievements
I said this before leadership top to bottom...... missing. In the room your 2 biggest cap hits are one that was captain and couldn't win and other won and wasn't a leader and i think the team is desperately looking for leadership hence the no identity tag. If it takes a kid to come in and punch or get punched to pump up this team and fans there is sad state of leadership happening.
With the team they are playing tonight and you may not like them or the way they do it but the 2 guys eating up cap space do what takes to win and the team follows no matter who they trade for or bring up.......Gee I hope that is not only recipe for winning a bunch of scumbags.
Let the Kid play just if for anything the reason the above
Also watch the kid Sill the Pens brought up he looked like he could really handle himself the other night.
Why does Brian Boyle never catch any heat on this blog. In my opinion, he might be the single most worthless player on the roster. It is painful watching someone with his size play the way he does. I get angry watching him play.
@TheNYRBlog but its easier to blame the players (who are slightly more disposable) than the coach and his long contract
A lot of fans want to blame AV for not teaching his system and being too hands off or blame Torts for being to hard on the players and being to hands on, not giving players a chance. Bottom line is this, this team is not good enough or skilled enough to produce any offense ! If u can't thrive under a defensive system or under a offensive system then what do u want. Hockey is a complicated game, but the bottom line is no matter the system, have more goals then the other team. This team has proven this year and last year that they can not do that! And this "offensive" system has exposed all this teams weakness's up to and including Lundquist. Nnot being a defensive team also show that there is zero leadership on this team. Rangers constantly get called out as a soft team and leadership has yet to step up to prove them wrong. Bottom line is torts was right he played a system based on the talent we have. Now we have a new coach time for a solid rebuild
This coach wont yell at them. He wont coddle them either. Theyve got to figure it out on their own and try to get their balls to drop back down. Sorry but thats the fastest and best way to describe it.
There is already "unnamed player" quotes coming out... This season is over and this guy is getting fired (sarcasm)
Off-topic, but sounds like Skjei has a good head on his shoulders:
Too early to blame AV, and the quote sounds fishy.
When do the "Leaders" of this team step up? Richards?? Callahan??? Hank wallowing in his post-game interviews, feeling sorry for himself and showcasing his lack of confidence for the entire locker room??? It is on the team. Dig deep, pull together and figure it out. This team lacks a true leader. A Messier type, who demands the best from every player each and every night. Everyone needs to be accountable.
Enough with the excuses and self-pity. It's time for this team to pull themselves up by their laces and start playing hockey… grow a sack and start acting like hockey players.
Last year it was the lockout, and Torts (who many know I wanted gone) and now it's AV, and his passive coaching style, blah blah blah. Enough is enough.
Wow....one "quote" from an "unnamed player" and we know all that goes on behind the scenes in Rangertown and all that AV does or doesn't do....amazing!
Maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions? Maybe this mish mash of a roster is just not performing well because it can't. Let's see how the season plays out and judge AV at the end.
@TheNYRBlog This team needs to go through a half rebuild and actualy build with consistant players instead of dudd irst round picks
Actually, as Brooks says in his article, the player who made the above quote, wasn't doing it in a negative manner. Just pointing out AV's coaching style.
So tell me, if this quote was attributed to someone like Pyatt or Asham or even DelZotto, would it still fall on AV that he needs to adjust or would it be more that the player needs to shut up and play? Sorry, I don't buy into any anonymous quotes. If you're not going to put your face to it, then STFU. It's also bush league for Brooks to print something like that because the reason to do so is to create dissent so he has bigger stories to write about. A-hole!
Just out of curiosity, I know the RUMORS of Torts' being fired were due to his coaching style and apparent "Mutiny" by the players -after a 9-2-2 run to finish the season and a rally from down 3-2 vs Washington (two things teams that have given up on their coach just don't do)- but i digrese, my question is, ASIDE from anonymous sources the media has claiming this, how has there been ZERO clarification of such? How do we know that is really why Torts was fired?
Has anyone looked at the team’s December record over the past 10 years or so? I’m pretty sure they’ve only won a handful of games over the years. I think these guys do a lot of things this time of year that makes them think about the fact that they play a game for a living versus what’s really important in life. Not to say that it’s not good work that should be done but it doesn’t make for the playoff push starting this time of year. I attribute Eli’s lethargic play to a change that happened to him right after Sandy.
Careful how you dissect Uncle Larry's quotes. That article over the weekend was a big "FU" to AV and Sather, and a big suck up attempt at Torts. And also never trust an anonymous quote.
I don't disagree with what you're saying, and I am critical of AV that for all the "every player needs to be handled differently" we seem to be hearing a lot of stories about all players being treated exactly the same. But we don't know the whole story. Isn't this the same coaching staff that earlier in the season reportedly gave out iPads to all the players so they could watch specific video? Unless the beat writers start telling us that the team is no longer having video sessions, or is arbitrarily working on things in practice instead of focusing on deficiencies, then I'm not worried.
This is largely the same group of players who quit on Torts and apparently cried to Sather that he worked them too hard. Now a quote comes out that ONE PLAYER is upset that he's not being spoon-fed enough information and is expected to do some homework, and we're supposed to be surprised? I'm trying to remember the last time my boss sat next to me at my desk for 40 hours a week and made sure I was doing my work right, and it's not coming to me.
Why pay him if he is gonna do absolutely nothing. ..... no one can defend this guy.....He expects players to figure out. Seriously?..... installing a new system but doesn't teach it. Doesn't break down game tape...... make adjustments..During the game.....
And some of u want to blame the players....seriously?.... how can u correct something u didn't teach or go over... No wonder we re a mess
@rangers212 Boyle never catches any heat because the heat people give him is undeserved in the first place. He's a mostly effective shut-down center, he's not a fighter and he's not a goal scorer. Just because he's big doesn't mean he has to use his size Rick Nash-style and bust through people on his way to the net.
@DaveFL No doubt.
Pretty cool to think in a few years we could have McDonagh being a pereneial Norris Trophy candidate, while McIlrath and Skeji, two large stay at home defensemen, are cleaning up trash and making sure Hank plays til he's 38.
@Iron MikeYup! Well said. A good coach or leader can stoke the fire but there's got to be a fire to stoke.
@avery. Nothing wrong with speculation. Im not gonna wait and see. Im gonna discuss things here that im curious about or confounded by. This is a place of open conversation. What would you propose? No discussion at all until the end of the season and talk about things that have happened? Yeah ok.
@AveryYesBettmanNoIt's more than this one quote. It's part of a trend for a coach who admits not knowing the leadership well, says he was told Del Zotto is better than he's playing and didn't watch video of his current players during the offseason.
i think there is a twist here that no one is considering...i think the players all went to sather and said, hey, we like playing for torts, but he needs to be a little more flexible, shot blocking is hurting us. Slats told that to torts because he agreed with the players claims, torts said no i wont adjust and slats fired him. Thats my scenario for how it actually went down. the media can easily twist that along with the Torts/Richards falling out into a huge deal of the players turning on him.
It's an interesting thought. I'd like to think it has more to do with demands on their time and schedule than the fact that it dawns on them that "it's just a game" and they take it down a notch.
If anything I'd like to believe that the exposure they get to the community at this time of year should open their eyes to how many people live vicariously through them. How many sick or poor kids don't have a ton to look forward to, but look forward to watching the Rangers at night. Maybe its their chance to disconnect from a bad situation, or to spend time with a parent or sibling who they don't see very often. I don't disagree that it should be a humbling experience for the players, but it should also be an eye opening one. Forget the suits at MSG. These are they New Yorkers they represent when they pull on that sweater and step on to the ice. It's bigger than just their day to day problems, and they have a responsibility to rise to that occasion. And if they don't, sure as heck someone is waiting in the wings for their opportunity.
He does teach the system.
He does go over tape of games.
The GM is to blame for the team make up.
The players lack of confidence, balls, passion or whatever you want to call it is also to blame.
@mnzajac@rangers212He's quietly having an OK season IMHO, he can be effective around the net without slamming bodies and dropping the gloves - would like to see him hit more and harder and should be capable of chipping in a few goals but he's solid and reliable on face offs and D and I don't personally have a problem with his game.
Uh....I didn't say anything about not having discussions, but you write what ever you want.
@Kevin DeLury@AveryYesBettmanNo "part of a trend"............WELL SAID! All human beings including you, me, Coaches, GMs and players behave in predictable patterns of behavior and have predictable patterns of thinking. AV is the way he is not because of his circumstances but because of the consistent choices he makes about "how to behave as a Coach." in any circumstances. He spoke the same way in vancoever. Thought the same way in Vancoever.
It is very difficult for any of us to change our behavior/thinking patterns.....just ask any psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker.
Only unusual and rare people can create behavioral changes in themselves and even fewer can inspire changes in others. Those that can are extraordinary leaders. For the last 4 years the Inspiring Leader of The Rangers....like his tactics or not, was Torts. He inspired player deveoplment in many of the players. His inspiring leadership (how he prepared, how he ran his training camps, how he ran his practice sessions
, the administration of his coaching strategies etc.) ignited the inner motivation in Prust, McD, Girardi, Cally, Step etc. Each and everyone of them were totally receptive to Torts' inspiring leadership and they developed accordingly.
This team, right now has no leadership not from the Coach and not from the players. Only a leader can recognize another leader which is why AV is clueless.
He self admits to it.... on numerous occasions...... and for how the team plays.....and questionable decisions or lack of its plain to anyone really watching..... that AV has a hand off attitude. ..The marks that have been made...and how the game is run.....When he coaches.... former players in Vancouver stated the same...no adjustments. And really lack of being a pro active coach......
Thats one hypothetical situation on top and dependent upon another hypothetical situation. Its a stretch.
@IcyCup And now you know why Media
Comments/Quotes are not admissable as evidence in a Court of Law.
Torts' problem was with Sather. Sather's problem was with Torts. Torts and Sather bought into a defense first system and It worked well for a time. Sather then changed in mid-stream and said I want to now go with an offense first system that showcases offensive stars.Sather then added and subtracted to the Ranger roster according to his "new strategy." Torts and Sather agreed to disagree and parted ways amicably with Torts keeping his salary
until he could find another Coaching Gig.
All any of us have to do is look at the history of both men and recognize how they make hockey decisions, recognize the hockey patterns that have motivated them for their entire careers.
This happens all the time in the NHL. If anyone thinks that Torts was fired because "the locker room was lost" or "the NY media was offended" I have a bridge to sell you.
as fan's we've predicated many conclusions of this team based on rumors without fact as to why JT was fired. There is not one true FACT that states JT was let go because the players wanted him gone.
@IcyCup http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/rangers/2013/05/glen-sather-discusses-firing-of-ny-rangers-head-coach-john-tortorella-read-full-tran that's the full transcript of that conference call. please point out to me exactly where a player went to Sather and wanted Torts gone. Your defined opinion of what happened to Torts is built up of hearing soo many rumors (non factual) that they've become fact in yours and most fans mind when we really DO NOT KNOW which is the truth
Ooooohhh an internet challenge. I believe it was made very clear in sathers conference call to the media after firing torts. Pretty sure.
do you mind showing me a link of a direct quote from a player (not anonymous) that actually documents that as the truth please? in fact, i challenge you to find one.
Thats a generalization. By all accounts thats exactly what happened. Sather said he was surprised at the exit interviews and that torts had a job for next season. At the end of the interviews, he fired torts. Torts then called out his former players and their manhood for not speaking to him directly about issues that they had. Dude. Its all been in the media. The players got torts fired.
@mlsranger Hockey players don't go to the GM behind coach's backs. it's not in their nature. That's why i have such a hard time of a player mutiny theory with no face behind it. It feels more "cooked up" to me and based off one small rumor that has evolved and grown as the media has never gotten a real quote on it so they go with what they have (a rumor). I think Tortorella's problem was with the media, not with the players. Those guys played for him till the end.
Giaradi has looked awful. The point ur missing is that he said that the team knew the system as presented to them which denotes that it was taught to them by the coaches. That was the point. Not girardis clueless between two worlds play.
Have u seen how Girardi s been playing...... and the rest of the def. They are running around and when all fails they revert to what they know. And that's blocking shots. enough said...
I don't a word AV says.. for any truth... He doesn't seem to engaged....passionate or even emotional
The players said in interviews during camp they were being taught a news system. Girardi being interviewed during the debacle of a road trip out west said they knew what was expected of them in terms of system and werent executing it. After numerous losses the coach has stated to the media scrum that they would go to the tape to see what happened.
I dont know. Maybe the coach was lying to the media. Maybe girardi is the best liar ever and wasnt being truthful after a painful loss. Maybe you just fucking misssed it too.
