Let me just start this off by apologizing for the ads on the blog. I hate them. They're annoying, they slow down load times and have I mentioned they're annoying. Especially the pop ups. Effing hate the pop-ups.
And I know you guys feel the same way because I've read your comments, e-mails, tweets and Facebooks messages.
But I've got to be honest with you, they're essential to the blog. In fact, without them the blog ceases to exist.
For the first three years of TheNYRBlog, I basically churned out 10-12 blog posts a day for free. I did it because of my love of the Rangers and the dedication I had towards to the readership of this blog. But that kind of commitment takes away from my family, friends and work.
Pride from building one of the most popular Rangers blogs on the net can only keep you motivated for so long.
Making some money with this little blog was always a goal of mine, but I really didn't have the time or resources to solicit ads. And asking you guys to pay for content was never an option.
Enter Bloguin in the Fall of 2010.
Basically they said, we'll host you for free and set you up with major advertisers. SOLD!!!!
Now I know Bloguin has their own issues. Their servers are slow, crash a lot and can be easily hacked. And trust me, I've let them know of my displeasure with a lot of what goes on around here. In fact, I'm surprised they haven't dropped me with all my complaints. But I digress. Despite all that, they were and still are the only blog network to reach out to me and offer to pay me to blog. So I am loyal to them. Also, every ad that is placed on the blog is 100% approved by me.
Are there a lot of ads on the blog? Absolutely. But that's only because companies don't pay very much to advertise on some small time Rangers blog. So the more ads I have, the more money the blog makes and the more likely it is that I keep this thing going.
Sure you can call me a sellout for saying money is a motivation, but when you put in as much time as I have with this blog over the last 5+ years it's nice to be rewarded with some green stuff every once in awhile. In fact, you guys can pretty much blame yourselves, because without the popularity of the blog I wouldn't be making any money with the ads and would have removed them long ago. So for that, I thank you. lol
In all seriousness, I am very thankful for my readership. You guys are the single reason the blog has gotten as big as it has. I don't have the backing of a major media conglomerate and Bloguin isn't exactly the most popular blog network out there. So without you spreading the word through Twitter, Facebook and talking with fellow Rangers fans this blog would have shutdown years ago. I wish there was another way, but there's not.
So what I ask you is this. The next time the blog takes a little longer to load or an ad pops-up or some random audio blasts, just remember those minor nuisances are what helps keep this blog going. I think you'd agree that that alternative (no blog) is much worse.
Oh yeah, one last thing...Let's Go Rangers!!!!!!!
There are ads on here? Honestly, these days we're bombarded by so much advertising on pretty much every available surface that I mostly tune them out.
I am a little late to comment on this one, but I never block the ads, and every now and then (maybe once or twice every week) I click on a bunch of the ads on this blog and browse the sites just to keep this blog going strong.
A little slower at times, but better than missing my NY Ranger blog fix every day!. I still can't believe I fell for your April Fools joke! You have created a family of Ranger fans here at the blog...thanks for keeping this thing going. One other point, I think Richards is going to bounce back big this year and Kreider is going to be a beast! LETS GO RANGERS
Ads are fucking annoyin especially when the videos take off on their own, Poor bullshit. Kevin, you're a cheap bastard.. :)
Never apologize for the Ads on your blog. Living out here in the desert of AZ I crave and appreciate the NYR hockey ideas you and your readers generously share in your blog.....please continue.Those who complain about the Ads simply are demonstrating how they have never made a contribution to others similar in scope to yours.....and they probably complain about a lot of thing in their lives and do nothing to improve/solve/contribute or innovate. ......THANK YOU, KEVIN
People bitch about the ads and don't use ad block? They should shut their fucking pie holes every last one of them. Something bothers you? Research a solution and fucking implement it.
Some people will bitch just for the sake of bitching.
I used to run an online fantasy wrestlng league about 15 years ago when I was in school. I did everything from top to bottom so I fully understand your pain. It became a 24-7 committment....before the day of smartphones so I was in front of a PC all the time. After about 3 years I was burnt out big time.
In closing thanks for your dedicaton & hard work. Please stop all posts regarding the King being gone. He is a lifetime blueshirt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's funny is that whle reading this, the Prudential pop-up video took over the whole screen 4 times while reading this article after closing it. Irony? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the ads. I work in Digital advertising so if it wasn't for sites like this I might not even have a job. Also, I enjoy the blog way too much to let a few clicks or an extra 20 seconds ruin it for me. Keep up the good work, October can't come soon enough.
Ads are OK on Facebook, CNN, Television, radio, even Pandora, but they are absolutely unacceptable on this site! For the people complaining to Kevin...get a friggin' clue. No ads means no blog means you have to go to Larry Brooks for any Rangers news. If phones are the issue, then go to a friggin' computer, it's not that hard. I have to say Kevin, I have absolutely no issue with the ads. I can't say I've clicked on any, besides the Yardbarker things on the bottom, but I know without them nobody would be doing the dirty work behind the net! Don't let the voices of the few outweigh the needs of the many!! Keep on truckin'!!
@TheNYRBlog This day and age, people should be used to ads on sites. And if they don't understand thats how you stay afloat.. well then....
Kevin, No apologies needed. You do a fantastic job with great devotion and expertise and that's all you need to know and all we need to know. I'm sure when u closed the blog down for a while, the whiners would have gladly settled for any amount of ads just to get the blog back.
@TheNYRBlog I know where you're coming from. It is what it is
@TheNYRBlog someone has to pay for your drinking habit.
I understand the need for ads and I'm happy you can get some money from them. But some of the ads are beyond "annoying," they actually make the site inaccessible. There's an ad for a push notification app that completely blocked the site from being viewed on any of my iOS devices for about a week on two different occasions. Since 99% of the time, I view the site on my iPhone (mostly at work, haha), I simply stopped coming to the site for about 10 days. I'm sure I'm not alone. That's lots of lost traffic for you.
people are really complaining? I could see an off hand remark about how annoying something is but I think anyone who doesn't live in their parents house still realizes that bills need to be paid! don't get me wrong, sometimes I wish is still lived at home and didnt have bills. but that ship has sailed. you could send someone to my house wearing a sandwich board and shouting in my ear through a bullhorn about Viagra pills and I'd still read this blog.
Yes the ads are somewhat annoying, but I use google chrome and installed adblock. Right now its blocking 21 ads lol. Definitely helps with the clutter. Still a bit slow to load but thats more to do with the servers of Bloguin.
People who are complaining about 3 ads and the NHL video box need to get a life. How long does this page take to load under the worse circumstances? 20-30 seconds? Life could be a lot worse, we could all be using AOL 4.0 or compuserve...throwback.
@VinnieLorenzo Thanks Vinny!
@award Let Kevin wait on tables, those ads suck.
@NH_NYR_88 If you use an ad blocker and it blocks any ad(s), they are not accounted for by tracking from the advertising companies, and Kevin will not be paid for them. Not judging, but just sayin...
@IcyCup Adblock takes from Kevin directly though.
Your cup runeth over.....great comment!
@L33tle Nemo Of course it did. lol
@_TimRosenthal Hate it.
@IMLazzaro It's my biggest expense. lol
@JamesU 90% of blogs and forums have pop-ups to enable push button notifications, all you have to do it press "cancel". Problem solved.
@xxscaxx 21!!!!! Geez, what a sellout I am. lol
@BenKoo No worries Ben. I've gotten a lot of complaints lately and felt I needed to address this issue with my readership.
@CollegeWolf @NH_NYR_88 I think you misunderstood, I shut off my ad-blocker, disabling ad-blocking for this blog. I've been doing that since Kevin scared us all to death last year when he said it was time for him to shut down the blog.
Thankfully he was bluffing, and he ended up improving the blog instead. It made me realize how much I appreciate the existence of this whole thing. I figured that viewing all the ads was the least I could do in return.
@IcyCup To be honest, I have no idea. But please don't make your decision to either use it or not based on that.
