Every once in a while sports and politics mix and when it does, it's usually not pretty.
And that's the case once again as Sen. Lindsey Graham has suggested that the United States boycott the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia due to the host country's recent decision to give asylum to U.S. citizen Edward Snowden, who has been charged with espionage for leaking details about two National Security Agency information gathering programs.
The U.S. Olympic Committee responded to Sen. Graham by stating a boycott would only hurt the athletes.
President Carter boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980 over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
...i very much doubt Putin, a relic of the Cold War, would even flinch if the U.S. did indeed boycott the Olympics. Some kind of economic sanctions are probably the better way to go.
...to the hockey side, to be honest, if the U.S. decided to sit this one out, I wouldn't complain about the extra rest for Cally, McD and Stepan. Having said that, without the U.S participating, the gold medal would be tainted the same way winning a Stanley Cup in a lockout year is.
...would love to hear your thoughts.
And here's your this can't be real image of the day...
...i have to admit, they're strangely awesome.
I gotta be honest-- I could give two s***s if cally and mcD get injured IF they help team USA bring home gold. Following team USA in 2010 was such an inspiring and thrilling experience in my life and easily some of the best hockey I ever saw. That team played with such grit and heart, with their red white and blue jerseys I almost forgot parise was a devil. Id be so disheartened to not see my favorite rangers representing team USA and making the rangers and our country proud with their undying effort and passion
Gonna get a tiny political for a second, since it's basically the topic--
Boycotting it because of Snowden, a whistleblower (good thing, IMO), got asylum there? Bad reason.
Boycotting it because of the recent treatment of LGBT people there (horrible thing, though they're treated badly plenty of places, USA included)? Good reason.
Do I think we should? I'm not really sure, but I am sure that we're not going to.
We should boycott Lindsay Graham and any other politician that has trampled on the Constitution through the passage, and continued renewal, of the Patriot Act.
Asshole!! (Sen. Graham) Olympics are about putting aside political differences in the spirit of friendly competition. Pull out during wartime? Yeah maybe but come on. This is just a snow(den) job
potatoe (hehe) chips, politics and homophobia all in one thread. love it. where's mcphee? does he work on the north pole in the summer? august already... that's good. baseball is getting good. tiger is in the middle of shooting a 59 as i type this. but screw it all. im ready for training camp. im pleased there is a new coach with an exciting system coming in.
In an ideal world, I'd love to see the Olympics MOVED, not cancelled- however unlikely that is. The stuff going on there with their new anti-gay laws is disgusting and absolutely terrifying. At least something needs to be done.
I will lose my mind if I go to the Olympics and Team USA isn't there over some guy who told the truth.
There was an Elmer Snowden who was once known as "the King of the Jazz Banjo." No relation .......
BTW, those chicken & waffles chips were part of a contest that Lays ran. I remember seeing it on one of those morning shows before going to work. I think it was Chicken & Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread, and some asian type flavor. I don't even think they won, I thin it was the cheesy garlic bread.
I would put more stock in a statement from Lindsay Lohan than I would from Lindsey Graham!!. There is no way we are boycotting the Olympics. We already had the pissing match in 1980 and 1984 and it did squat for either country, except to increase each country's medal count. Nowadays the Olympics is too big of a money-maker for the people who actually control this country (i.e. the corporations and their lobbyists) to risk losing out. What we should do is create an all LGBT team that can just totally gay up Moscow, without actually preaching that they are gay so they can avoid arrest. That would be FABULOUSSSSSS (in my best Nathan Lane voice).
@BrianMineola Seriously. I can't believe I was cheering Parise like a madman.
@Betweentheworlds Maybe showing up and proving the host country wrong could be a good thing too (a la Jesse Owens in front of Hitler and the Nazis)
@IcyCup If you don't spell it potato, you're clearly with the terrorists...LOL!
@samanthastyler The question is where would you move them to? Theres no such thing as a country with clean hands. Technically I should boycott the NHL because the majority of teams are owned/based in a country that supports torture, drone attacks on civilians and still allows the death penalty.
@CJ_Matthews I bet Lindsey Graham is SAYING boycott against Snowden but secretly THINKING boycott against LGBT policies.
@CJ_Matthews Could not agree more.
@gravey94 I think the last flavor was Siracha? Never tried any of them though.
@gravey94 What do you have against Lindsey Graham, he is one of the few politicians who's trying to expose Obama and his cronies for the cover up of the tragedy in Benghazi. If everyone in congress and the senate would be as diligent as Graham and McCain, this country wouldn't be in danger of becoming a third world country and we would get more respect from other countries.
@gravey94 LGBT olympic team? Now thats 'straight' brilliance.
danny q. uggg. im dating myself.
@craig_atherton @samanthastyler Of course there is nowhere that has "clean hands", but what is currently going on in Russia is one of the more blatantly cruel and horrific current events, and the world spotlight is on them as they are about to host the Olympics. The rights and safety of any gay, perceived to be gay, or LGBT-supportive athletes, family members, and fans from around the world are at risk. Moving the Olympics is not going to happen, but it would show Russia that their ridiculous and hateful policies are not tolerated.
it's not that simple, and this isn't the forum;
but i'll hear you out on hockey every time.
with all due respect,
@_Jack so many scary headlines on that page.
@craig_atherton lol "ye evil drunk". awesome.
@gravey94 Right behind Goonies.
@gravey94 Cobra was easily a Top 5 movie from my childhood.
Come now, it's clearly totally awesomely insane! Sly doing an over the top impression of himself. It was an instant classic!
@_Jack Responding to this thread while waiting for the next flight to Russia to meet with Putin.
@craig_atherton it always comes back to money. all of it.
@samanthastyler @craig_atherton Yeah I hear you, whats happening there is disgusting and I didnt mean that you only cared because its Russia. What I meant was that Russia has been the boogeyman of American and British politics for so long that anything they do receives extra attention from politicians trying to drum up support. Those same politicians have nothing to say about the Chinese Olympics or the world cup in Qatar because trade with those countries is too important economically.
@craig_atherton @samanthastyler Sorry, I should have stated it in a better way. What is going on there for LGBT people is just one of many horrible things happening in the world. All of the things you listed are extremely disturbing and sad.
The difference is that Russia is under more scrutiny than usual by the media because of the Olympics coming up, and there are many possibilities for awareness on THAT particular issue to increase to the point where something can be done. It's not that the other problems in the world aren't as significant, it's just that this particular one is one where we can show Russia that we do not agree with their nonsensical, hateful, and discriminatory new set of rules.
I don't see it as an issue with Russia, I see it as an issue with human rights. No matter what country did that, I would be against it. It's definitely not the only reason that I (and many others) are boycotting.
@samanthastyler @craig_atherton I absolutely agree that Putin is an evil shit and that the anti LGBT laws are a disgrace, but to say that they are among the cruelest and most horrific current events is ridiculous.
Civilians in Pakistan are dying by the boatload due to US drone strikes. Thousands are being massacred on both sides in the Syrian proxy war. The UK government is currently threatening and rounding up none-whites for deportation. People are being worked to death in China to make cheap consumer goods.
The only reason a boycott has been discussed is because these olympics are being held by the old enemy
