Welp, at least Papa Malkin knows how to turn a boring August day into excitement for Rangers fans as he recently told SovSport (via Dmitry Chesnokov of Puck Daddy) this about possible destinations for his son Evgeni if things ever soured in Pittsburgh...
“But son said ‘If things in Pittsburgh were ever to go downhill and I would have to leave, I would pick the New York Rangers or the Montreal Canadiens. There are a few clubs, but I am in no rush to be in Dallas. But actually I don’t want to change houses, go somewhere. I am used to Pittsburgh - to the city and the team.’"
Malkin just signed an 8-year, $76 million extension with the Penguins this summer.
...obviously this is not something that is imminent and is likely just a random conversation Evgeni had with his father about other cities he thought would be great to play in. And New York is an obvious destination as the bright lights of Broadway would be appealing to a super star such as Malkin, not to mention the comfort level he'd have in a city with such a large Russian population (see Brighton Beach).
...having said that, with the cap space the Rangers have next summer, you have to wonder if Sather has the stones to contact Penguins GM Shero about acquiring the Russian sniper.
...so, how in the world would he be able to pry such a talent away from a legit Stanley Cup contender? It would likely take the perfect situation and giving up the Rangers best player in return. It's summertime so let me throw this scenario out there for conversation sake. What if the Rangers struggle this season and Lundqvist refuses to sign an extension before the trade deadline? And at the same time, the Penguins underachieve behind the continued regression of goaltender Marc Andre Fleury. That scenario screams for a Malkin for Lundqvist blockbuster deadline deal. And who is going to tend goal for the 2014-15 Rangers you ask? UFA goaltender Jonas Hiller of course.
...so what do you guys think? Would you ever consider Lundqvist for Malkin?
...the only negative I see with Malkin is that Rangers fans will have to learn how to defend a player who slew foots.
Without Lundqvist, we are toast. Even with(Malkin) a potential 50 Goal scorer on the team, it does not take away the fact that you need a top notch goaltender to win. (See the Lightning with Stamkos/Lac/St.Louis if you don'y believe me). Hank isn't going anywhere. You have to look at him as an individual person with hobbies as well. He is a fashion nut like Avery. He likes the glam and attention(see his Lamborghini). He would not fit in any other city. And please enlighten me of a Russian that has led their team to a Stanley Cup. They have a reputation... See Ovi for further details. They just lack the drive when things get tough.....
Ha, ha - some summer humor. I get it. thanks Kevin Yeah, we could give up the King for whiner Malkin, as long as we get "Stonewall Fleury" in the deal. they can keep "5 hole Fleury"
Hey Kevin... just saw it on yahoo... but some Caps guy is doing top 10 games of the 2013-2014 season. Might be cool to do one a day for ten days... since there really is nothing to talk about these days... (so sad). Could be cool... I can already tell you number 1 for me would be 7:30, January 29th at Yankee Stadium agains the Islanders... and my least favorite would be Rangers @ Canadiens to end the season (easily gets the number 82 spot)
As great as Lundqvist is, you don't need an elite goalie to win in this league. It's not like a quarterback. You just need a capable one. But you do need goals and Malkin can score while Lundqvist can't.
Trade Hank for Geno? In a heart beat! All you would need is a new goalie who only give's up 3 goals per game as opposed to Hank who has to stop EVERYTHING for lack of scoring. Geno will and can light up the lamp! it's a no-brainer!
should have saved this post for April 1st.
No denying Malkin's skill but his heart is another matter. He totally laid down in the playoffs when the Pens were down. he would NOT do well in NY.
All depends upon what the "souring" is from. If it's a whiny type reason, then no thanks. If it's because the Pens suddenly decide to go into a rebuild mode, then I would consider it. There's not a chance in hell that he gets traded before Hank's contract though, so it's a moot point. IF this were to happen it would be at least 2-3 years down the road. They can't trade Hank until they know they have a replacement, and they are no where close to that at the moment Dr. Fleury and Mr. Hide During the Playoffs is a non-starter IMO. So bottom line for me is, no I don't make the trade. Sign Hank and be done with this nonsense!
Imagine how provocative this post would be if Malkin hadn't just signed his extension. It's hard not to be excited at the possibility of obtaining Malkin, but it's pretty far fetched. Still, it's great to know that star players always have New York on their short list.
If there's anyone I'd trade Hank for, Malkin would be up there. Keep Fleury though. Don't want anything to do with that dude, as I've seen him choke time and time again. The Pens won the cup despite him.
However, this is not likely to ever happen. Hank loves it here, and Malkin loves it there. I would say that it's more likely for Malkin to sour on them first, but honestly, it's not like I have anything to back that up. In that case, we probably would not have to give up The Best Goaltender In The World (TM) to get him.
Fun hypothetical post though, Kevin!
Only way is a straight trade for Ritchie = I can't stand the cheapshot artist, but if it frees us of the current albatross contract then maybe, but I would still despise him!
Good article but u are CRAZY to even mention Hank in any trade discussion. The King will retire just like Ranger great #35 Mike Richter
That last sentence is something I could never do lol. As for considering this, the only way I would is IF there was no possible way Lundqvist was staying, then yeah would rather get something for him. But I doubt that ever happens. If it did, I honestly would probably call a couple of other teams before I considered taking Malkin.
1. Knowing nothing will come out of this, I just like to continue to see that the Rangers are "the team" that all superstars want to play for (Montreal also). It is nice to know superstars still dream of playing in Broadway.
2. If it did happen and both teams had an off year... could you imagine a Lundqvist, Girardi (rights) and Miller (or a high end prospect) for Malkin and Fleury. But, there is a negative attached to something like this besides losing Hank... Malkin drags a 9.5 million dollar cap hit along with him starting next year.
@josh930 i agree with everything you said but want to correct you on a russian leading his team to the cup. last time the ens won the cup, Malkin won the Conn Smythe. So although I hate that slew footing, cheap shotting Igor, you I cannot deny that he is both effective and ugly.
@JoeNYR Actually, I haven't. Is that not a big Russian area? Was under the impression that it was.
@tygalpin Had no choice. August is boring the shit out of me. lol
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I think even if Sather has a doubt in his mind, he should look to unload Hank if he hasn't re-signed him by the trade deadline.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) really? Is that because you don't like Malkin? I think he is a top 3 player right now, and i like that he plays with a "temper". Think he plays like Kovalchuck and uses his massive frame to create space. Just a solid player, may only put Crosby (when healthy), Datsyuk (not for much longer) and Stamkos ahead of him (idk they are close)
@FREE LINDBERG No thanks on Fleury. Although obviously the Pens would be looking to unload him with Malkin.
@KevinDeLury no one else liked this comment... it really is the middle of August
@KevinDeLury @Melissa (blknblueshirts) this is going to be in caps because it is what I will be stressing all season and will be the motto the Rangers need to live by this season (or the front office at least)
THE RANGERS CANNOT LET HENRIK LUNDQVIST WALK AND GET NOTHING IN RETURN. IF HE DOESNT HAVE AN EXTENSION 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE TRADE DEADLINE... ITS TIME. I LOVE THE GUY MORE THAN ANY PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE, BUT LOSING HIM FOR NOTHING WOULD SIGNAL A HUGE REBUILDING ERA... WITH NO GOALIE IN SIGHT TO DO IT AROUND.
@KevinDeLury Sadly, I agree. But I also think he'll be signed long before that so I'm not really worried about it. Can you imagine if there is talk of Hank being traded at the deadline? That would be worse than the Nash deadline!
@FREE LINDBERG I was thinking Stamkos. Malkin is definitely up there and definitely someone I would take before putting a package of players together but I've never really been a huge fan (maybe it's the slewfooting lol). Of course he's incredible so it's not like I would be against the Rangers getting him.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) btw obviously i would rather keep hank still
@KevinDeLury Young I meant like 19-24 age lol :D
