One way we all expect the Rangers to clear out cap space to re-sign Derek Stepan is by sending Arron Asham and Darroll Powe down to the Wolfpack. That move would give the Blueshirts almost $2 million in additional cap space.
However, in a recent interview with Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record, assistant GM Jeff Gorton said Asham and Powe will both be at training camp competing for spots despite being put on waivers this summer. Both cleared.
They would have to clear waivers again if the Rangers want to re-assign them to Hartford.
Gorton also noted that the Rangers would prefer not to exceed the salary cap by the 10% they are allowed during the summer.
...i've got to assume Gorton is trying not to tip the Rangers hand while they're still in negotiations with Stepan because with those two on the roster there is only $2.1 million to re-sign the free agent center. Which is not enough even for a bridge deal. Unless of course a trade is on the horizon.
...also, Gorton probably didn't want to publicly embarrass Asham and Powe by admitting neither of them had a chance of making the roster.
They said the same thing about Redden despite him very clearly not having any shot of making the roster. Gorton is going to be diplomatic but the realities of the salary cap means that a player or two is going to be sacrificed. They are the most likely.
Staal is probably not tradeable. He'll either resign with the R's or go to Carolina next season as a UFA. Why would Carolina trade assets for him now when they can get him for nothing in a year? If the R's tried to trade him elsewhere, the other team wouldn't do it unless Staal agreed to a multi year contract. Staal is in total control of his situation.
When you consider that the Rangers made it into the second round of the playoffs with these two who, when released, were passed over by every team in the league, you have to be even more excited about this upcoming year.
If that's the case you would have to assume a trade is imminent, Staal to Carolina? Delzotto for a bag of pucks, sorry don't mean to disrespect hockey pucks like that.
It thankfully appears that there will be room to sign Step and keep the existing roster by sending a few to the AHL, but I bet slats is keeping the trade option open too!
Girardi is a warrior. How could you trade him for a top 6 d man. Not a smart move in my opinion. But hell I just wanna win a cup haha.
@JMK8363 Sather is going to have to get creative for sure.
@greggray24 Only Sather would do that.
@Centerman21 Nice winger may bring a bigger salary than Girardi has so cap situation even worse.
