When the season is hanging in the balance, you look to your leaders to step-up and carry the team to the finish line. And that's exactly what the Rangers captain Ryan Callahan did last night.
One look at the above stat line from last night tells you all you need to know about Callahan's influence and impact on the Rangers.
Here's video Cally's overtime winner in Raleigh...
....Callahan would be the first to admit he didn't have the best game in Florida the other night, but he made up for it in spades with his ridiculous effort last night. And that's what a captain is supposed to do. The man wearing the "C" doesn't always have to be the most skilled guy on the team, although Callahan is very talented, he has to be the guy the rest of the team is willing to run through a wall for and I think the Rangers have that guy.
...when the Rangers are going right, they personify the grit, determination and emotion of their captain. It's when they stray from that style of play that they get themselves in trouble.
...i truly cannot wait for the day when Captain Cally holds that Stanley Cup over his head in front of 18,200 at MSG cementing his place among the all-time great Rangers captains.
Here's Cally post game...
He's the man!!! Still a young capt. How far will he go?? Just a notch under Mess is my opinion, which is effin' spectacular!
Callahan and Clowe not on the ice. Maintenance day for Cally or is he getting a night off? PLEASE NOT THE HAND, that he blocked that shot with
Really bored in class and looked at the Rangers cap situation... here is my analysis... but again I am ill trained in gm matters lol.
Based on Callahan's contract and Stepan being an RFA, the maximum I think he gets is a 5 million cap hit. In my opinion I think the Rangers either sign him to something like a 3 year 15 million dollar contract, or 4 year 19 million dollar contract. Then with a small amount of regression from Mcdonagh he gets 3/4 years at 3.75-4. Finally Hagelin will get around 2.5 for 3 years. Then we look at clowe, who is now injured, and really has not done that much... he gets 4 years at 3.75-4 million. Mats Zuccarello gets a raise to 2 million for 2 more years. With those free agents that is about 17 million in total.
Now contracts we lose, Drury buyout (1.667), Redden buyout (5.6), Hamrlik (3.5), Sauer (1.25), Gilroy (.65), Eminger (.75). Right there that is 13 million. If you look at the UFA//RFA we need to bring back, and their current contracts, in terms of raises we will be filling an additional 10 million in cap. That leaves us with 3 million left over, to bring up guys like Mcilrath or resign Eminger.
In my opinion the problem is the year after, where guys like girardi, del zotto, stralman, Moore, Kreider, Brassard, Boyle, Callahan and Henrik are all going to be looking for raises... difficult decisions are going to be made. I think just looking at this DZ has to be traded for some draft picks... he is going to ask for 4 million I would bet, and not only do the Rangers not have the space, he is not worth half of that. A lot of tough decisions are coming and it will be very interesting to see how it is handled.
My move would be to try and get something in return for both DZ and Boyle before they walk. All the other guys on that list have to be resigned (except maybe stralman if someone like mcilrath or Skjei steps up).
Sorry for the length, really bored and thought i would do something semi-useful with the time :)
I really hope it happens... but even more so the second man he hands it off to.... It will cement Henrik's status among the best goaltenders of all time, and easily the best Rangers goalie of all time! When he hoists it I will be overcome with happiness
Considering there have only been 3 NY Rangers captains to hoist the Stanley Cup wearing a Rangers sweater/jersey, I think you could argue that Cally has already cemented his place as one of the all-time great captains. Winning a Cup, moves him up a few rungs.
"When" being the key word! I have to say again Rick Nash has been a disappointment in my eyes. He was barely visible on the ice the last 2 games.
"...i truly cannot wait for the day when Captain Cally holds that Stanley Cup over his head in front of 18,200 at MSG cementing his place among the all-time great Rangers captains." I'll try really, really hard not to shed a couple tears of joy when this happens.
@Josh6 MDZ is still young and could wind up being really good. Flashes of brilliance have been there especially when he plays nasty but all these mistakes and poor judgment plays are getting old. does he have 1 more year left on current contract? A lot more will be expected from him next season otherwise he's gone.
@Josh6 Richter? Giacomin?? Could be but I wouldn't say "easily" the best Rangers goalie of all time
@gravey94 right behind Mess, he has to win multiple to pass him, and even still it would be very tough
@Josh6 I think he's on par with Kisio now. Both hard-nosed heart and soul guys. If Cally wins a Cup or has a few years of long runs, then he's behind Mess. He never passes him in my book. Mess did something that nobody accomplished in most fans' lifetimes, AND he was captain for 10 years. Still, not too shabby to be #2 behind THE Captain!
@Josh6 Cally will never end a 54 year Cup drought. He may someday get very close to Mess, but he never passes him in my eyes.
@gravey94 what if cally wins 4 cups lol... never say never
