During the Rangers 4-2 loss to the Flyers on Tuesday night, Derek Stepan took a dirty, cowardly elbow to the head from Claude Giroux which went virtually unnoticed around the hockey world...
Pat Leonard at the Daily News describes the aftermath of the hit...
"Giroux's hit just inside the Philadelphia blue line, on the first shift of the third period, had Stepan wobbling on the ice and aching on the bench before he returned to score and nearly complete a comeback in a 4-2 Rangers loss."
Leonard adds that the NHL did not schedule a hearing for Giroux.
...it doesn't get more disgusting than this folks. While no intentional blow to the head should be tolerated, I can understand, in the heat of the moment, when a player, looking for the big hit, comes in high and hard. But what Giroux did is completely different. His sole purpose is to injure Stepan. The puck was no where near the Rangers center and Giroux goes out of his way to target the head. And in typical Flyer fashion, instead being a man and taking on Stepan face-to-face, Giroux decides to assault him from behind. Coward.
...while I understand that officials miss calls every night, the NHL, who claims to be cracking down on this kind of garbage, should be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed that they did not discipline Giroux. Especially when the Flyers captain is a repeat offender. Shanahan typical.
...it just absolutely baffles me how the league can hand out a 25-game suspension to Raffi Torres for an overly aggressive hit on Marian Hossa, while looking the other way after Giroux does something that would get any of us arrested in a second.
Stepan, who did not participate in practice yesterday, said this about the hit (via New York Post)...
“I was a little confused at first, but it wasn’t anything serious. It took me a few seconds to get my bearings. It was almost like a ‘ding.’ ”
Stepan added that yesterday was a maintenance day for him and he was little banged up.
Rangers should amnesty Richards, sign center Stephen Weiss, and trade Pyatt to Florida for Jack Skille. Weiss takes over 2C and Skille goes to 4RW. Having players on the fourth line that can skate well, shoot and move the puck, and play PK at a high level make teams much better for playoff runs...Skille can do all that @ $1M/year
Yes Mike Barton, I agree with both of your assessments, the Flyers may well suck this year, but the Rangers play hockey with tampons dangling between their legs! As the Chiefs GM would say, "Bunch a Pussy"!
@TheNYRBlog typical Glyer move
... and in typical Rangers fashion, nobody sticks up for Stepan. I couldn't see who it was, but there was a Ranger right there who must have seen the whole thing, if nobody else.
The league has the screw the Rangers button on every season. This doesnt surprise me. The league officiating is brutal hands down. 4 guys on the ice and no one sees this.
@TheNYRBlog and clowe's supposed boarding call. I thought boarding was a major penalty this season. And he nudged the guy with shoulder wtf!
So explain how it was Giroux was in front of him headed into the Ranger zone and when it happened reacted like he had been run into and looked back at Stepan like oh well, better watch where your going! Anyone not a Ranger fan would agree it wasn't Giroux who initiated the contact so that means you're delusional!
i would like it if someone on the team kept that elbow in mind and concussed that ginger fuck next year.
@TheNYRBlog so has anyone ever asked torts why he bothers bringing players that he wont give significant ice time?
@TheNYRBlog The best point from the Step article: Shanahan typical.
@TheNYRBlog if Stepans Crosby that's what,7 games?
Terrible job my me ignoring the Rangers lack of response. Almost equally as shameful.2013 Rangers typical.
And the Rangers didn't react because this team doesn't. They don't stand up for each other at all. It was a cheap hit, and by the way, the Flyers still and wil always suck. Thanks.
@TheNYRBlog Blog seems to be down Kevin. Don't know if others are having issues accessing it
@TheNYRBlog Hey Kev...server down?
They don't play again. Not that anyone would do anything anyway...at least, not until the momentum swings in our favor, then you can count on Asham to punch someone in the face. Bonehead.
Do we play the Flyers again before the end of the season? If so, look for number 28. If not, let bygones be bygones. At least he wasn't injured.
However Mike, your sarcasm was well deserved! Why if it weren't for the Flyers losing to them almost every game, they may not even be in the playoff position their in, and join the Flyers on the greens come playoff time! Lol
Mike, this is such a ridiculous blog written by a jackass trying to blast Giroux! Did you see the play? Stepan ran into him, and Giroux didn't even see him there! That is why Callahan left him alone and no one from the Rangers has bitched about it being cheap! You know I would be straight with you if it was cheap, Flyers or anyone!
@TheNYRBlog once again NYR show they can't stick up for there players! Dont care what the score is, cant let that happen
In summary, the NHL's department of player safety does not suspend Claude Giroux for the following 3 reasons...1. Yes the hit was an egrigious and disgusting display of malice toward another player, but Claude Giroux is a superstar. 2. Yes Claude Giroux is a repeat offender, but Claude Giroux is a superstar and 3. The hit shows a complete lack of respect for the other player, but this is typical of the Flyers anyway and we don't want to start suspending Flyer players because if we did, then by the end of the week they wouldn't have any players left...and Claude Giroux is a superstar...
@TheNYRBlog Shanny didn't go after MDZ's elbow, they won't go after this.
I am so angry that there is no suspension for this hit. What can we do to bring attention to this play (and the lack of discipline)? ecampaign? protest outside of NHL offices? start anti-shanahan chant tonight at the Garden? There must be something
Take some consolation in the fact that this is their captain, the guy that leads them. To nowhere. The guy that does shit like this, the guy that actually taunted and interacted with Pens fans last year in the playoffs. A no class, no character piece of crap who perfectly mirrors his organization and fan-base. Here's to another 3+ decades of futility.
I saw Callahan go after him after that but then he just seemed to drop it and the play went on. I wish he had pounded hi,.
I watched it from the stands...Their fans are just as bad...set them off when I sarcastically congratulated them for winning 2 out of our last 13 meetings and reminded them to enjoy their last 5 games of the season before hitting the golf course
@TheNYRBlog Thanks Brendan Shanahan...
@TheNYRBlog Just like Nash didn't get one when he deserved it. Star players get special treatment. That's the way it seems to be.
@TheNYRBlog dont you know you cant suspend the coverboy of NHL 13!??!?
@TheAngryWhite Yeah, some server issues this morning.
@mvmone What else is new.
@coontzbloontz no we don't, series is done
@shantm79 Apples and oranges. Giroux's intent was to injure. Del Zotto's back was to Neal.
@dxman830 So sad.
