After last night's disgusting loss to the Florida Panthers, John Tortorella was asked what went wrong...
"It's 1-1, we're in full control of the game. I don't think we should take a penalty and we don't get the puck out when we're killing a penalty, twice. End of story."
...the Richards penalty was the height of stupidity and the failure to clear the puck on the unsuing penalty kill was obviously a killer, but Torts must think we're all stupid. You lose to the worst team in the NHL and we're supposed to believe one sequence lost them the game? How about going 0-for-3 on the power play against the worst penalty kill in the league? Or Nash coming up small in his biggest game as a Ranger? Or how about scoring just one non-garbage time goal against a goaltender who had given up 25 in his previous six games? Two of which he was pulled in.
...i also wasn't a huge fan of Torts pulling Hank with the Rangers on the power play in the closing two minutes. Being down just one goal, it doesn't make sense to give the Panthers an opportunity to possibly end the game with an empty net tally?
Here's more from Torts...

I thought Nash and Zuccarello were the best players on the ice for both teams. The blame is on the rest of them, Callahan was awful as well as Richards.
We're just trying to be who we are while we find out who we're going to be, while we get where we're going people. Richie's penalty got in the way of our finding what we were meant to do while getting where we're going to be who we are, that's all. Sincerely, The Fonz.
I support Torts's decision to pull Henrik during the power play at the end of the game, it's a risk he had to take, since a mere one-man advantage wasn't going to get it done last night.
This loss is actually much worse than it looks no matter what anyone says. We put a complete beatdown scoring 18 goals in 3 games (including against the very desperate devils and sabres), but we just shit the bed and lose to the shitty Panthers. Our D wasn't bad, those two goals nobody would've stopped they were ugly deflections, but that doesn't excuse that our whole roster is wildly inconsistent. Someone else mentioned it, but with Zucc, Brass and Richie stepping up, Nash and Callahan took the night off. What the hell is with this team? And MTL has been horrible lately, and is facing the Jets at home, almost no doubt in my mind thats an easy jets win. Makes this game against CAR astronomically important. If we lose, you can rest assured NJ will do everything in their power to ruin our season on Saturday. Get your fucking shit together NYR.
Penalty or no penalty, this team blows donkeys. Absolutely no excuse losing to Florida. That's 2x now against that farm team. Torts system? Perhaps. But like all sports, its the players that have to work. And for two periods they were blah. Cally was sloppy, Nash was nowhere, and really Hank? Allowing 2 goals on like 7 shots? Can't happen. He of all people should know that the team in front of him wearing the same jersey as himself were going to poop the bed. Pathetic.
Forget the fact we failed to clinch a spot.
It's not gonna matter once we get in, if we can't find a way to beat the worst team in the East - what are we gonna do against the Pens, or Montreal or Boston?!! When does the coaching staff start to take some ownership and responsibility here? Cmon Torts.
This team is looking more like a one and done in the postseason.
The call on Richards was garbage, but still not a good enough excuse.
Penalty Kill 101 - ICE THE F*CKING PUCK.
Look up 'Inept' in the dictionary, and it will read New York Rangers' Powerplay.
Frustrating game. I need a cold one and it's only 10:09 am.
I'm glad I missed the game lastnight. It's bad enough that I had to get the text updates on the score...shameful.
I don't think we should fire torts but almost every team in the east besides the penguins and maybe the bruins would kill for the roster the rangers have. This team shouldn't be worrying about getting into the playoffs with two games left when teams like the islanders and maple leafs have already clinched. Yes torts brought this team to the conference finals last year but they beat an 8 seed and then a 7 seed to get there. If the rangers lose in the first round sather has to consider the future of this team and if torts is in that future
Richards lazy dive was a bad move -still no excuse they should of played with as much intensity as they did in the last 2min of the game
I couldn't believe they called that penalty on Richards, what fucking garbage. But that doesn't excuse our inability to clear the fucking puck on a kill WOW.
This would really poss me off if I was Richards because he's been in a rut all year and I thought he continued his great play from last week into last night
Also, something that has to be said our top 3 players right now are Zuccs, brassard and Moore. I love to see that, and Moore had another killer game (he deserves Moore time than del zaster), but to succeed in the playoffs our best players has to include Rick Nash. If he can't perform at this point in the season, the rangers are toast
I don't think the blame goes to any one person. The best coach in the world can only do so much ... then the players just have to play up to their abilities. In all honesty, even if we manage to get into the 8th playoff spot, does anyone really think we can beat Pittsburgh? The problem with this team is they just can't score. It's been a constant problem and there comes a point when one has to wonder if they have the ability to perform at the level it would take to be a top notch team. I certainly think they try their hardest. There is not a one of them who enjoys doing poorly. I don't know what the answers are, but unless they do a complete turn around, then the off season is not going to be a happy one for anyone.
You know I reacted the way most fans did last night, and should be expected too. Lets call a spade a spade, that was a horrible loss... Maybe top 5 in the last decade of the regular season. But with 2 chances left to clinch the more concerning thing is the play of Rick Nash. He has been a different player for a couple of games now, and does not look himself. This is the time of year where this guy might as well be a rookie... For gods sakes kreider has more experience than him. The problem with the rangers this year has been consistency, we have never had it. Now that Richards is playing well, and he is starting to play like himself, and zuccs is stepping up. It appears Nash has taken a backseat and cally has too. Torts needs to get these guys playing their best game every night, something they have yet to do this year. If the season comes down to Saturday and we need to win, I suggest everyone polish off their golf clubs because there is no way we win...
They were playing too safely to score more goals. It's the 2013 Panthers. They could have willed a win here. It's not that one play that lost the game.
Couldn't agree more. Pulling Hank when we are already on the PP was fucking stupid. There was no reason for it, and THAT is why we lost the game, not Richie's penalty (which was a BS call.)
time for a coach change no excuses you have top notch players lundqvist/hagelin/stepan/nash/comon!!!! stop blaming the players ....???....always said also d is good pretty shut down but we havent had that stud oon the blueline since leetch...
@FranO WOW! WTF was I thinking and how did it take till now for someone to notice. I need to stop writing posts at 1am. That's awful.
@JoeNYR he should of called it as soon as Winnipeg had lost, and told the team... Listen you are playing the worst team in the NHL find a way to win and clinch YOUR playoff spot.... But I still think Dolan had a hand in this ;)
@PenaltySh0t that was a trip dude. No question about it... But they had ample chances to clear on the pk and when they didn't they got burned
@JoeNYR he is a great goalie down low. Where he falters is when there is traffic in front, which we had none of besides our one goal. If he can see it he's probably going to save it, which is expected of an NHL caliber goalie. The rangers need to get bodies in front last night, simple as that
@JoeNYR He definitely made all the saves he had to, unfortunately not many were of the difficult variety.
@CJ I think Torts pushed the panic button in this game. Changing lines yet again in the 4th period and then pulling Hank while we already on the PP.
@JohnPiccini I will say I don't think he should fired but I do think he needs to get a better assistant. One with more imagination. Torts has done a great job bringing a structure to the organization and building with youth. That said ... time is now for them to win so I give him next year.
@JohnPiccini I'll go on record saying I don't want Torts fired. I disagreed with his decision on Hank and his comments, but not ready to dismiss him. Yet.
@KevinDeLury @JohnPiccini if they lose their next two games, I really don't get how you can feel that way. What were their last 7 games against non playoff teams with points in hand, and they miss the playoffs... That would be awful and I would put that directly on him. I still want Leetch somewhere behind the bench... He can't be worse than sullivan
@KevinDeLury I know you dont (yet), but you should have seen my Twitter timeline after the game last night. LOL
@Josh6 actually, if the player dives and touches the puck, a tripping penalty isn't warranted. Weird rule but true
@PenaltySh0t as a player you are responsible for your stick and yourself... if he trips over richards after he tried to make a diving play, that is a penalty
@JoeNYR that is what happens when zuccs and brassard are the only ones that go to the net... They are the only people with any heart
@Iron Mike @KevinDeLury @JoeNYR of all our bad losses lately (this one and Flyers) the shot selection was shit. The players don't know how to exploit goalie weaknesses. For example, rangers just kept shooting high glove side on Mason and he gobbled every shot up like nothing. Same with Markstrom, he has bad rebound control and a weak blocker side, we don't exploit it. I don't know if that's a coach problem or the players just being stupid....
