Courtesy of my good friends over at The Pens Blog comes this amazing gif of the notorious John Tortorella "overtime winner" fist pump last night in Raleigh...
...i've literally watched this a thousand times already.
...i tell you what, you can criticize Torts about a lot of things (line juggling, Kreider, etc.), but as I've said numerous times on this blog, the guy cares about the success of the Rangers franchise. Don't know how anyone can look at Torts' emotion in the above gif and not be excited to have a guy like that behind the bench.
...as we remember from the early 2000s, it's not easy to get into the playoffs and the Rangers have now qualified for them in four of Torts' five seasons behind the Blueshirts' bench.
Here's Torts after the game...
Haha I love this gif!! You have to question some of Torts' handling of players this past season (see Gabby, Krieder), but the fist pump gets me real fired up for the playoffs. I'd love to see him lean over and give DaBoer a piece of his mind Saturday.
Wouldn't want anyone else behind the bench in a run for the Cup.
Not a coach out there that is better suited to lead this organizaiton to the promise land. That one season we did not qualify was the first season or the second I believe when he took over for Renney and we lost to the Flyers in a shootout, I think 2nd season, we lost by one point in a shootout and the Flyers went all the way to the finals.
If anyone forgets how great of a guy Torts is, go watch the HBO special from last year. The guy is a class act and although he give off a crappy persona through the NY media, he really cares about Rangers hockey and the fans. I go crazy with his line changes and his tight offensive scheme but that's his style. The personnel changes with the kids I'm sure come from not only Torts but his staff. The kids will be fine.
Of course he cares. Coaches (in any sport) don't coach if they don't want to win or succeed with their teams. I doubt they're in it to get the big paychecks. Torts is and always will be a polarizing figure. You either love the guy or you hate him. Much like many other NY team coaches (Billy Martin, Bobby Valentine, Pat Riley, Bill Parcells, Rex Ryan, etc.). Hell, Keenan was the exact same way with fans and now he's looked at with reverence by Rangers fans. If Torts can win a Cup, he will go down in Rangers lore as a beloved coach.
I like Kreider's hop right over the boards. He should've played basketball, would've gotten more playing time.
Or, at least he cares about keeping his job. If this team missed the playoffs with, so many chances to seal their own fate, his seat would be hotter then ever this summer.
@Mikeytri I saw that, too. Also, the 2 Ranger fans in the front row. Pay huge money for front row seats...watch game on the scoreboard...
@thenyrblogneill Kreider is an athletic freak of nature to be able to two foot hop over the boards like that!
@thenyrblogneill He has a lot of energy from his lack of ice time. lol
