So, apparently while I was renovating my bathroom there was some Rangers news. None bigger than Marc Staal reporting that he has begun skating for the first time since being sidelined by a puck to the eye on March 5th.
Staal, who took the ice for the first time yesterday and again today, said this about the injury (via Blueshirts United)...
"The first night the eye looked good, I didn't need surgery, so that was good. Every week or so from there the vision would clear up and get better, so that was encouraging. It's been tough, though. That first week was pretty scary, I don't think my wife slept the first four nights wiping blood off my eye and off my face."
Staal's vision is still not back to 100% and he does not have a timetable for a return.
Here's Staal's full interview...
...WOW! He looks great. For some reason I thought there'd still be bruising. Never like hearing he might never regain full vision, but it doesn't sound like it'll prevent him from playing again.
...and let's hope he returns soon because after what we witnessed last night, the Rangers need Staal back as soon as possible.
In other news, the Rangers assigned JT Miller to the CT Whale.
Miller has missed the last four games with a wrist injury.
...this is obviously not unexpected.
...another major positive of Sather's deadline moves is it brought great depth to the Rangers organization allowing them to develop Miller at their own pace with the Whale, instead of being forced to use the young center when he was obviously not ready for the every day demands of the NHL.
...the experience he gained during his 26 games in the NHL will be integral to his development. He now has a working knowledge of what he needs to improve on and will be a better NHL player for it.
Since Staals concussion, Girardi and McD have been carrying this team defensively, even after Staals return as he tried to get back to form. Girardi is matched up against the best players in the league EVERY GAME.
This team needs Staal back to compete in the playoffs, but this notion that Staal needs to come back to rescue this team from a "crummy" and "atrocious" Girardi is as silly as it gets.
Girardi is crummy.Wasting shots and assignments.MDZ backslides once in awhile.Hurry back Marc! Staal should wear a cage if we make the playoffs, never mind a full face visor.With Staal this team might just have enough to get through some rounds.If Dorsett can improve our club then maybe we have enough to do better.Have to have Staal tho or we're done.
BTW, Isles, Caps and Jets all get wins tonight. Senators lose. The Rangers are in a race for their lives right now, and if they can't find a way to get 2 tomorrow, they put themselves in a must-win position on saturday, otherwise they are on the outside looking in
Staal is an animal, and better not bolt for Carolina in a couple years for his brothers... he better be a Ranger for a while...
@TheNYRBlog Are you adding a Stall in to your bathroom?
@TheNYRBlog we missed ya on tweeter
@TheNYRBlog Don't blink!
@TheNYRBlog Talk about a royal flush!!!
@Josh6 Yeah it'd be nice to have him back. It'll be interesting to see what happens, especially since Eric, Jordan, and Jared are all with the Hurricanes (Jared still on their AHL team). In a few years it's possible all three are playing, and you do have to wonder how tempting it would be to play with all three brothers.
@Lordstanleybroadway On three of the four goals, Del Zotto either fumbled the puck or was out of position, leaving G and Hank on their own. He was also on for the power play goal that the Leafs had, which I don't understand how McD can leave van Riemsdyk right in front of Hank without a push or a shove. I don't think it's a coincidence that since Staal's injury G is a -6. McD is solid but keep in mind he's just 23 and Del Zotto's 22, they're both still learning. Staal is our best, and most proven defenseman, which proved to be valuable in a lockout shortened season.
@Lordstanleybroadway playing 3 on one the entire game because of del zotto. The sentence "Girardi is atrocious" is, hands down, the single most retarded thing I have ever read in the history of my ability to read the English language.
@Bill_Garone Boooo!!!!! LOL. Actually, that was pretty funny.
@SarInTheCity Yeah, I've been out of the loop this week and likely into the weekend.
@JAGD94 Tell me about it.
@AnnoyingJoe So I guess you think a minus 3 from your top defenseman is not retarded? In one of the biggest games of the year so far? U can drink the girardi kool aid all u want the bottom line he has been average at best all year whether MDZ has been with him McD or Staal. The sentence playing 3 on one because of MDZ is hands down the dumbest thing I have ever read hands down. He's been playing 25 min a night I guess u know more than tortorella too? He was the next leetch up until two days ago now he's the reason girardi stinks. Just left Van Riemsdyk alone in front of hank on the 2 nd goal untouched shoulda grabbed him a cup of coffee while he was it.
@AnnoyingJoe agreed. that kid should go back to watching the NY Spankees.
@TheNYRBlog because you're renovating ??
@TheNYRBlog Damn it we need a win and some defensmen with kahunas!
@Lordstanleybroadway since when was MDZ the next leetch? really?
@Lordstanleybroadway i agree with you, as much as i love Girardi he has been playing average this yr ... he's a minus 6 this season and i haven't noticed him like i did last season, maybe he is playing banged up but at the end of the day NYR needs him to step it up
