With the Rangers in full free fall mode, you have to assume Glen Sather will do something to shake things up. Well, according to Jason York at Sportsnet, Martin St. Louis might be that move.
While York said he doesn't expect St. Louis to be traded he did add that list the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers as possible destinations.
In related news, Steve Zipay at Newsday reports that Lightning scouts have been following the Rangers fairly consistently.
St. Louis still has two-years left on his contract at $5.625 million per.
...can St. Louis still play at a high level? Yes. Did he have success with Torts & Richards? No doubt. Do I really think this happens? Absolutely not, but I never put anything past Sather. This team needs a major shake-up and trading for St. Louis would do that.
...now as I mentioned, St. Louis has a hefty salary, so the Rangers would have to send back an expensive piece if they want to stay under the cap. Gaborik going back might make sense for both teams.
...figure you guys might have a couple of thoughts on this. lol
Speaking of Gaborik, even if the St. Louis rumors aren't true, the Rangers sniper is likely on his way out, right? Maybe not says the guys over at Sportsnet...
To watch at Sportsnet, click here.
...despite my fictitious Gabby/St. Louis trade, I really don't think he gets moved. And since a lot of you think the Rangers should trade Gaborik, I figured I'd let some experts tell you he won't.
...for those of you who want Gaborik gone, who in the heck are you replacing him with? Obviously this year's version of Gaborik is easy to replicate, but what about the 40-goal scorer, who carried the team last season? Those guys don't just grow on trees.
...he may not turn it around this season, but I feel pretty confident saying that next year the Gaborik we all know and love will likely be back.
In other transaction news, the Rangers reassigned Kris Newbury to the CT Whale.
Newbury tallied one assist during the four games after he was recalled on March 23rd.
...apparently Newbury brought too much toughness to the table for Tortorella.
With Newbury being sent back to the Whale, you have to think Jesper Fast might be getting the call, although Steve Zipay at Newsday reports that no decision has been on made on his status as of yet, but should be determined by the end of the week.
...why in the world is Fast just sitting in a hotel room in Manhattan? Either get this guy on the Rangers roster or on a bus to Connecticut. Not sure how room service helps with his development. Unbelievable.
I have a proposal. How about a trade of Tortorella for StLouis than trade St Louis for a horse then shoot the horse and donate the meat to McDonalds. LOL. Just disregard the shooting of the horse part of this post.
Why are the Rangers hanging on to Richards? He is the teams biggest anchor. With talk of buying him out next year, and the opportunity to trade him before Thurs., I don't understand how you don't throw it out there to at least see if there's any interest. Lots of teams looking for centers - have we got a deal for you! Low mi. hardly driven!
@TheNYRBlog Why is there still St. Louis rumors? Yzerman said hes not being traded.
The New York Ice Follies continues into April. St. Louis already played under Torts. Why the hell would he want to play for him again, just to get his skills stimied and have no one stick up for him? Don't think Gabby's going anywhere but if he does I hope they will have sense to get good prospects and maybe a 1st rounder. This team needs heart, not new players. Newberry's not the answer to their grit problems, not alone. How no one stuck up for him and Hank when Chris Neil shoved him into hank was unfathomable, especially with the "tough" 4th line out there. WTF? they need to decide right now whether they want to win or not. They are good enough to succeed but there is no heart on this team. A coaching change may be the best thing, whether Torts is to blame for this mess or not.
I have a couple of theories on Gaborik:
He's playing scared for a couple of reasons:
Firstly, I think he's scared to hurt his shoulder again.
Secondly, because there isn't anybody on the roster to protect him. Last year, teams knew that if you took a run at Gaborik, then you'd have to deal with Prust, or Bickel, or Rupp, or Dubinsky. Its been well documented that there is nobody on this roster who can drop the mitts and really fight. The other teams knew that they'd get a response from somebody who is on the ice and there isn't any of that this year.
you had me until you started talking about the financial security you would have gotten from working for the fishsticks, then I KNEW you were joking.
Marty St. Louis isn't going anywhere.
“Marty St. Louis is not going to be traded,” Yzerman told ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun today. “He remains one of the best players in the league and an extremely important player to our team, both on and off the ice. We are a team in transition, we just made a coaching change, Marty is one of the leaders of the team, he is not going anywhere.”
"...apparently Newbury brought too much toughness to the table for Tortorella." Zing! Are you sure you didn't take a job with the Isles, Kevin? ;)
Agree with you on Gabby & Fast. Unsure how I feel about St. Louis coming to NYR. I love Marty, but it seems too "logical" a fit to actually work for the Rangers.
Can we just skip ahead to next season?
@TheNYRBlog I knew it! Thanks a lot Kev.
I've always loved St Louis' game, but this isn't who we need. Sather needs to go out and find what this team is missing (grit, physicality and determination), not go out and get someone to do what this roster should be capable of as-is (score goals). Torts admitted that they "miscalculated" losing Prust, Dubinsky, and Fedetneko, and I'm not saying we need those guys back, but no one has filled their spots. Powe has been a nice find and has been good on the PK, but he's brought no upside to the offense. We can't live in the past, just like no one saw Prust coming, our scouts need to find that next guy.
st. louis to the rangers rumors have been around for longer than skinny jeans and flat billed baseball hats.
I'm going to happy in 2 years when the Rangers' Cup chances take a sharp dive as Lundqvist ages. Get Tortorella out. He is ruining this team's offensive talent.
Pretty sure I saw Yzerman say that St Louis was not getting traded so you can kill that rumor. Agree with you on Gaborik. As for Newbury, my guess is our penalty killing needs more help than our toughness (although they both need help) so I would do a Newbury for Powe swap. Granted if Torts replaces him with Gilroy then I got nothing lol.
That said, why should we listen to you if you are now working for the enemy? :-P
@TheNYRBlog torts to whale for gerander
Who is this Gaborik kid you're talking about? Was he a late round pick last year? I don't remember seeing him this season.
@TheNYRBlog you had me going kev
@TheNYRBlog I knew it that is why I din't comment by calling you an Asshole
Move Gaborik. He's a terrific player when he is a terrific player. He stinks when he is not. We need consistent year in, year out performance, especially for that kind of money. This was a special year and he didn't show up.... much like a failed Lawrence Taylor drug test, if you follow my drift.
Gaborik isn't going anywhere... So instead of trying to find ways to get rid of him shouldn't the brass be looking at ways to get him going? I think playing him with a Zucc who can create some offense and maybe a Stepan to go get the puck..
Oh, so you aren't leaving. Damn, I was looking forward to a better blogger for the Rangers. April Fools! LOL.
@mattsteeleNJ Because the trade deadline is two days away. lol
@nyrfan747 This is absolutely true and I've been saying similar to you for over a month. He got plastered in a game early on and has not been the same since (don't remember the game but do remember no body stuck up for him). He may have tweaked his shoulder leaving his lethal wrist shot ineffective. He never had a physical game but he was never timid either until this year. Another off season to heal the shoulder, some adjustment to his game if his shoulder is permanently compromised (like a pitcher who gets Tommy John surgery a smart, savvy pitcher will add new pitches to adapt to losing a couple mphs off the fastball) and given the right environment and Gabby will be right back. He's a smart player who knows how to score.
@nyrfan747 you may have a point here. let me add one more theory. if tortorella gets canned this year, what do you think gabby would do? i'd bet, no joke, he'd pot 8 goals in 5 games and who knows about assists.
@Josh6 Where did you see that?
@gravey94 gaborik... hmm... sounds like a celeb gossip magazine? i dont know. no idea.
@Josh6 Actually, just found it: https://twitter.com/HawkCrawford/status/318131793553412096. Thanks for the heads-up.
@IcyCup I think it may be an anagram for John Ogrodnick!
