Yesterday, while most of us were enjoying egg hunts and Easter dinner, the Rangers, lead by Ryan Callahan, were rallying around their coach by responding to Sean Avery's ridiculous tweet criticizing John Tortorella...
“Sean Avery’s comments solely represent his own thoughts and opinions. He did not speak for us as a team when he was here and certainly does not now.”
...i really feel if the Rangers had tuned Torts out this response would not have come.
...were they trying to get ahead of the story? Sure. And responding absolutely gives Avery's comments credibility. But I really don't think Callahan nor the team would have come forward with this statement unless they really meant it.
...and who knows, maybe it has a Joe Thornton affect on this team and forces them to rally around their embattled head coach.
Meanwhile, Avery responded to Callahan's response...
...after what happened last season, I didn't find it hard to believe that Avery would tweet that Torts was a clown. But no way he goes after Callahan. Which is why after seeing this tweet, my inner conspiracy theorist has stood at attention.
...the Rangers have for the most part always stood up for Avery. No matter what his antics were, the players supported him. When no one would go near him with a ten foot pole after the 'Sloppy Seconds' comments, the Rangers were the only team to come calling. So I think Avery did this as one final thank you to his former club. What better way to bring a team together than by having them rally around their coach. It has also taken the focus off another horrendous showing in Montreal.
...Sean Avery has already saved three Rangers seasons during his career, it looks like he might be making an attempt at #4.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that there is no evidence ownership or upper management has given the slightest thought to dismissing Tortorella.
If Ryan Callahan or any other Ranger had NOT spoken up about Avery's comments then the silence would have thrown more gasoline on the original statement. Tortorella keeps his job as long as Henrik Lundqvist really says so. No matter what the Rangers say to the world; just like Messier if Lundqvist says he is not happy over the direction of the Rangers then so long Tortorella.Rangers can replace the coach but they don't have any way to replace Lundqvist
This is not an attempt by Aves to get the team together, it's to stir the pot. Lundy bitched to Avery, Aves said, mind if I stir the pot, Lundy said go for it. Neither thought it would warrant an 'official statement'. They're laughing about it. The only ones dissecting it are the fans.
We Jews have a saying, "Alevai" which I have probably spelled wrong (as it is a combination of 3 hebrew words) but translates loosely into "may god be listening..."
One other thing. If somehow this is true & richards put him up to that Tweet, then his leadership is as inept as his play has been this year.
the fact that everyone is talking about tort's job is significant. and you're right kevin. the fact that there was a need for a response to avery's comment gives it credibility.
i love this team. i like it's general make up now. not ideal but i like it. i think that the one thing, at this point, that would get more out of the players and revitalize the ones who are playing in a VERY uncharacteristic fashion, would be to get rid of torts. ive been such a fan of his in the past and could mostly give a shit about his antics. but what im seeing now is a team that doesnt believe in what he is pushing. a team that doesnt believe in his philosophy so to speak. i see a frustrated, angry, complex character trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole.
the clock is ticking, as you have all heard me say (kicking a dead horse, sorry) countless times. the path to the stanley cup, as stated here by people far more knowledgable than i, goes through shittsburgh. we CANNOT be lead there by this coach.
sorry ive been so caustic lately on the blog. i just care that much and can hear the clock ticking. if it isnt put together this season or next, we're going to lose a lot of core players as they sign elsewhere with a better chance to win what we all want.
<drops mike, stumbles off of soap box and walks off, stage right>
I liked Avery as a hockey player & instigator.. If he kept doing those 2 things well, then YES.. If he turned the situation into his personal BS & drama again (which he sure would, 'cause he is an attention freak) then NO. PLAIN & SIMPLE. and remember, he wasn't part of the team last season.. Just saying..
@TheNYRBlog when Stepan came out in defense of Tort, that was enough. Avery is a self centered moron.
Would Cally or anyone on the team publically admit to any unrest in the locker room? I mean come on. This is almost as ridiculous as Richey' play on the power play. The proof is in the pudding as they say. Problems in the locker room = problems on the ice.
Feel like this is as good a place as any to share-- '“Contrary to what the standings show today, the Columbus Blue Jackets are not in eight place in the Western Conference,” the statement said. “This has been an April Fool’s joke on Rick Nash orchestrated by several teams around the league. And it will get even funnier when the Blue Jackets make the playoffs and the Rangers don’t. Whoops – did I give the joke away? I’m sorry.”' http://realhockeynews.com/2013/04/01/april-fools-jokes-played-around-the-nhl/
Anyody notice hoow the players DID NOT mention in theer statement that they are 100% behind their beloved cocah? Besides most fans know there was no love lost between Avery & Callahan.
When was the last time Avery tweeted anything about hockey? He picks probably the low point of the Rangers season to do it now? I don't think there's any "official" conspiracy going on, but I would not be shocked if Hank and/or Richards got in his ear to ask him a favor. If the Rangers suck again tonight and there's no follow-up Tweets from Avery, then I think your conspiracy theory has a lot of merit. Of course if they win, Avery will take all the credit.
I think you are reading this one completely wrong. There are huge problems in that locker room and the loudest most important voice happens to be best buds with Sean Avery AND silent on the comments about the coach . To think that Cally did anything more than attach his name to a statement written by John Rosasco is putting too much faith in the captain who says less things of substance than Jeter.
@TheNYRBlog 'I really don't think Cally nor the team would have come forward with this statement unless they really meant it.' Another joke?
@TheNYRBlog Avery was our best player in playoffs against Pitt an wash, torts suspended him an was suspended by NHL. We lost.
Kevin...I say this w-all due respect cause I respect your opinions & I like your posts however, your conspiracy thoery is ridiculous. This was nothing more than Avery doing what Avery does taking a cheap shot. Its his M.O. (see "sloppy seconds" among others for proof). He said it cause he wanted to undermine Torts and saw an opening to pile on. He also did it to draw attention to himself. So if you think the players asked him to do this so they can rally around Torts your wrong. The only thing Avery was thinking of when he tweeted it was himself. Furthermore, if somehow you are right which I highly doubt, it won't work. Its a contrived stupid way of supporting the coach & is doomed for failure. The good news is its not. Its normal behavior for Avery, who is a self serving, immature, immature, insecure, jerk!!!! Just an all around bad guy with very little redeeming qualities as a human being.
A commenter on this blog said it best a short while back...these guys are playing like co-workers and not teammates.
@TheNYRBlog Torts needs to have a "sit down" and talk to this team like Messier to Keenan during 94 ECF. That won the series & cup.
@ThrSage Everything about Richards is inept. His game, his leadership. The fact that he treats the puck like a grenade, doesn't back check and can't pass anymore, oh and also that he overstays his shifts. He's done. Like Chris Drury at the end.
@ThrSage i dont think richey is the kinda guy that would do that. i think he may bitch to friends about problems in his life liek we all do and told sean. but im thinking more like it was hank that bitched. his post game interviews could melt butter.
@IcyCup "shittsburgh",really????champsburgh maybe?Imo you are more a NYR fan than a hockey fan!smh...Torto bring problems everywhere he goes.Of course hes got a ring...but TB was a super team back then.
For the reconstruction,NYR first move should be just that....Tort-OUT-of here.
@IcyCup People on this blog have literally told me to shut up lol for being so caustic - it's the passion we have for our hockey team and the frustration of knowing our coach appears to not see what we fans see. Trying to tone it down as of late let's just say that IMHO our coach only sees this game from 2 dimensions (depth being the 3rd dimension including intangeables like human psychology, chemistry etc.). It's like having an abusive boss vs. a fair kind boss. At first you might perform better for the abusive one out of fear but after a while the fair boss, who praises you, pays you well etc. is the one you are going to go the extra mile for while the abusive one eventually gets the finger. I was never a fan of Torts. He shut me up last year getting his boys to work hard and overachieve and he almost made a believer out of me but this year it's the same old sh#*. Would love to see this mess straightened out and our boys play like they are capable of. There were glimmers of hope in Philly.
@Betweentheworlds Unfortunately I think Cally's response was essentially just that... he's made it clear that there is in fact some drama in the locker room, otherwise why even give Avery the time of day. Is the locker room broken? Maybe not. Divided? For sure.
@Betweentheworlds truth resides in this comment here.
@tygalpin The Blues have three games in hand on the Blue Jackets and only need to make up a point. I think this joke is a little forced.
There was no love lost cause Cally is everything Avery isn't. A good guy, a good teamate, & a decent human being.
No way Richy/Hank are behind this. Why not just come out and rally for the coach u need Avery to tweet something so u can rally behind it? That makes no sense. The simplest answer is always the best answer. And here it is....Avery hates Torts & he saw an opening and tried to kick him. Avery also has a history of being aselfish guy now he is going to do something to help the team win? Please!!! he doesn't want them to win. He wants them to lose so torts gets fired & he can have the satisfaction that they didn't win w-out him. Avery is a dick always has been always will be. As a fan I held my nose & rooted for him to help us win and he did but make no mistake he was a bad bad bad guy then and he is a bad guy now. So stop trying to make it seem like he is this selfless guy who is looking out for his best friend. Its all nonsense I am sure Hank/Richy think he is a dick just like everyone else who has met him. The tweet is right in character for a guy who has been universally hated everywhere he has played.
@rangerface Have to agree here, you don't see Hank and Richards running to defend Torts. Cally most likely didn't have a choice in the matter. If there weren't problems in that locker room then Avey's tweet would have gotten any shine...
@ScottyHockey I may have blinders on, but I really believe that.
@ThrSage definitely, and if it is true, it is sad. Why all the smoke and mirror shows? If they need this to play hockey, they shouldn't be playing hockey in the first place. Period.
me. sad to be correct as well. theyre acting like fucking co-workers.
I think that was IcyCup ... not sure
@IcyCup Well....he was TORT-out-OF THERE!
@Iron Mike @IcyCup Sean is not Sean if he's not stirring things up. Even off the ice he's the same old guy lol. I agree the locker room is probably in turmoil but not broken, not yet. It seems Cally would need to take charge the way Mess did in '94 when there was almost an all out mutiny against Keenan. But Cally is still a "captain in training" in my book. For him to rise to the occasion would mean we'd still have a chance of getting into the playoffs. He no doubt feels the weight of responsibility as his game has fallen off - or so it appears as such to me.
@ThrSage There's also that possibility.
@ThrSage he has not been universally hated everywhere he has played.
@Iron Mike bingo.
@Iron Mike bingo. there are huge problems in both places. just watch Hank post game. that room is either divided or broken.
@TheNYRBlog not blinders, rose coloured shades. It's cute. You know that most statements & most tweets are written by the NYR staff, right?
@IcyCup @_Jack Even tho I dont follow the NYR on a d2d basis,I like that comment fr @IcyCup ;they are acting like co-workers!(which is VERY diff fr teammates).Never heard that before "acting like co-workers",awesome analysis! Maybe I judged you too fast on my previous comment!
Still dont like the "shittsburgh",but that analogy was pure genius.
Sorry for my poor judgment...And do you mind if I use yr analogy fr time to time?
@TheNYRBlog because Cally has nothing better to do then follow exteammates on twitter ... He's a mouthpiece for the organization.
@ScottyHockey Still doesn't mean Callahan didn't ask them to write it for him.
I know you didn't give a strong opinion on it jut a tepid one but you know what will spark this team? A few goals by Richards, Gabby, Cally, et al!!!!
BTW Kevin one thing you were dead on about this... why didn't Torts start Asham so he could pummel Paciorety? That was ridiculous we all know from his past antics Asham is more than willing to go after guys who hurt his teamantes. It was pathetic that he didn't play him & Torts should know better!!!!
