The Rangers fell tonight to the Pittsburgh Penguins by the score of 2-1 in a shootout. For a box score, click here.
Three points out of four in the home and home against Pittsburgh? Sign me up!!
Still, tough luck loss tonight, Rangers absolutely deserved to win. Only Fleury prevented tonight's game, especially in the third period, from turning tonight into a repeat of something resembling Wednesday's 6-1 stomping. If they keep playing like this, they shouldn't have any problems making the playoffs. After all, it's a great sign the Rangers are beginning to warm up just as the weather begins to warm up.
Nice job by the Rangers weathering the early Pittsburgh storm which was to be expected. Even more impressive was the Rangers were able to tilt the ice back towards Fleury's net which resulted in 13 NYR shots with a few good chances in that first period and the puck possession dominance stayed that way for the majority of the game.
Clowe fought a Pen one game too late, would've loved to see a Gordie to go along with his epic game from Wednesday.
Good job by the Rangers to not become "paralyzed" as Torts likes to say following Pittsburgh's quick goal to start the third. Not sure the Rangers of prior games this season would've been able to salvage a point against a top notch team like Pittsburgh.
Is it me or when something goes against Pittsburgh, their guys love to try to take some cheap shots against foes... that Dupuis flying elbow into Del Zotto just after the icing? I'm not sure I would be able to count how many games Dupuis would've been suspended on one hand. If that elbow connected....
Everything about the Del Zotto elbow into Neal was unintentional. You have to be a moron, or a Pens kool-aid drinker to say otherwise. Hopefully he's ok, because I want Pittsburgh at full strength for the postseason.
Stepan was brutal in the circle tonight going 7-28, but only one of those mattered. Big faceoff win and a clutch shot by Nash that trickled over the line. Had to be a feel good goal immediately following Dupuis' attempted cheap shot that landed him in the box and Brassard's shot that was probably in, but was ruled no goal.
I was concerned that Pittsburgh was going to get the Malkin line out against Eminger and Moore as much as they could. Outside of Eminger dumping Cooke in front of the Ranger bench in the first period, they were barely noticed. All good signs coming from your bottom pairing d-men. Eminger had 13:01 TOI and Moore had 10:06 TOI. Important if you don't want to burn out McDonagh and Girardi as was the case last season.
Nice antics by Cooke in front of the Ranger bench, he's definitely changed his ways...
Hank post-game mentioned tweaking his hamstring in the shootout, but said he was ok. Still something to keep an eye on but sure to cause mass panic if he doesn't play tomorrow night against Carolina.

Solid game, the team is finally forging an IDENTITY. Tough on the forecheck, banging in the corners, hard to the net. Let's see some consistency tonight in Carolina.
@TheNYRBlog ecstatic with 5 out of six points from two teams above them
Ok guys...the Del Zotto issue has been settled. i have claimed intentional..that he initiated contact...a reverse check or reverse elbow. Other have claimed others wise..spin move...momentum.....
Now from the man himself Mike Del Zotto....
""“I think they just dumped (the puck) in, and I knew I was going to get hit on the forecheck,” Del Zotto said. “I just tried to kind of REVERSE HIT and brace myself. I’m not sure exactly what happened.”""""
Here the link to the article.....
So...it's pretty much what i thought it was. DZ initiated contacted on a reverse check(he admits it)....he does it with his elbow.....and since Neal had his body lowered....it caught him in the face instead of the chest. But it was an intentional elbow....
I only get NHL Center Ice also but if you go on Msg.com you'll get Torts interview on there.....It doesn't come on live after the game you have to wait for it
No way that is intentional. His momentum swung him around and Neal skated right into it. This is a game of grown men sometimes u get hit. This team showed these last two games especially last night since u knew Pitt would play tough at home as a bounce back, that we won't take shit from anyone. Dominated that game.
Good solid game by the Rangers. I think we outplayed the Pens. As far as the elbow to Neal... It was a clean unintentional hit. I need to go find Torts Postgame now, because someone did post it..and I only get the NHL center Ice package and had to listen to the Biased as hell Pittsburgh announcers. Although I have to say that they did say the Rangers were beating the Pens, several times and locking up the neutral zone.
Hope Hank gets a break either tonight or Monday against Toronto. Biron hasn't played in a while. Got to keep the King healthy.
Had to watch on the NHL Network feed which was the Pittsburgh announcers. I literally had to turn the sound off after the first period. Being a homer is one thing, but those guys are downright ridiculous. Plus, if I hear Malkin referred to as "Gino" one more fucking time...........:)
ummm brassards shot that was probably in?? did u not see the replay that showed the puck the entire time and it was clearly not over the line??
So did the Pens get Jokinen just to beat us? He sucks against just about every other team, no?. Even though we only got 1 point that was a victory in my book.
Cannot complain about getting 3/4 points vs Pittsburgh in a home and home. Had you told me that at the beginning of the week I would have laughed so hard I would have pissed my pants.
I would not mind Biron in goal tomorrow give hank the rest no matter as he will most likely start every game there after.
The pens started getting dirty in the 3rd. kinda scary actually. Cooke being a chradrool in front of our bench. not complaining about this loss though I think we were the better team.
Cookie in front of our bench! The best part about that was when Clowe skated up and told the little female dog to shut up and leave and kitty Cooke did!
Man did we play against 2 different goalies the last 2 nights? "5 Hole Fleury" on Wed. "Stone Wall Fleury" tonight. Damn the officiating was awful - face offs brutal but what a great game. I have not seen a Rangers team in a long time, not even last season pick apart a defense the way they did in the 3rd period - and the Pens are not shabby on D. Gotta believe that if everyone stays healthy that we go deep into the playoffs - anyone going to the parade???
Nothing on the Cooke slash of Lundqvist? Plays like that should result in fines and suspensions.. that is ridiculous.
@McPhee37 I've seen worse including Neal hitting Boyle last year. Since its a Pitt player hell be suspended for sure.
@McPhee37 Yeah, as I was saying. Neal darted to the inside and MDZ jumped back torqueing with his right shoulder. I don't think he knew exactly where Neal was. If Neal's head is up, the elbow doesn't hit it.
Regardless, as much of a bitch as Neal is on the ice, I hope he fully recovers. He didn't look good.
@McPhee37 I don't think anyone is arguing he initiated contact. I see nothing in there that even remotely implies he meant to elbow him.
Your wrong Broadway. DZ admitted to the reverse check.
@AnnoyingJoe I've been asking myself this since the start of the season.
@RobertChiarello hahaha i hear ya man, i had to mute the game and watch it that way .... they are so biased its not even funny, a couple games ago they called the rangers old, would of loved to watch there feed when we spanked them 6-1 ....
@RobertChiarello I got stuck with them too - ridiculous how bad they are. Worst announcers in the league by far!
@JoeAntos Got to go with Joe here. Camera showed it never crossed the goal line. Unless it initially crossed when Fluery made the save.
@Skunkman u can say bitch
@Betweentheworlds careful tossing around the "P" word
@nyrnyg17 Cooke is getting cooked next time we see him. The ref was looking right at him. How does that not get called? I like good hard play but that dirty shit's got to go.
Wow Herman. By DZ's own admission he tried to hit Neal. So, we can at least agree on that right..since DZ admitted it to it?
So...since DZ admitted to trying to hit Neal....what part of his body did he use? His elbow. He meant to hit him with his elbow....just probably not in the face.
@JMK8363 @RobertChiarello Ditto! I get that they like the Pens but can they be any more partial?! Fleury with great saves left and right - especially on the Brassard bank shot. While Lundqvist was lucky he stopped the puck. This Pens player is wonderful...he does it all...blah blah blah. Few play-by-play or hockey-related-intelligent talk. As camera zooms in on Brassard on the bench, they mention new Ranger, #16 Ryan Clowe.
@thenyrblogneill Ha - good advice Neill and great write-up, though I'm not so convinced that MDZ's elbow was so innocent - no intent to injure for sure but did you look at that one frame by frame?
@Betweentheworlds That is the shit that needs to be taken out of the game. Slash to the forearm of our goalie and most valuable player. Clear intent to injure. With his history should be at least 1 game. That type of shit leads to one of our guys trying to get revenge and going a little too far and getting a suspension. I hope we play these fucking pansies in the playoffs.
@McPhee37 Lol! Your reasoning is a bit off dude.
@McPhee37 Once again, who is claiming that Del Zotto didn't try to hit Neal? Have you ever played a sport? Doesn't even need to be hockey. It works the same in soccer or basketball. There's a loose puck/ball and you see a guy approaching from the side/behind, so you turn your body to gain better positioning use yourself as a shield between the opposing player and the puck/ball. Sometimes, in the act of doing so, you accidentally knock the guy with your arm. It's happened to me a million times and I'm sure I've done it my fair share to others as well. It's accidental. If he wanted to hit him with his elbow he could have done so without turning his body. It's clear that his intention was to put himself between Neal and the puck. Not to elbow him.
@AnnoyingJoe I'm with you when it comes to Pyatt and you can even throw Boyle in there too. At some point in the offseason, NYR brass will have to make a decision when it comes to those two. Kreider makes Pyatt expendable if he's ever able to translate his game to pro level.
@thenyrblogneill yeah. But he wouldn't be playing. Because Pyatt has dressed for EVERY SINGLE GAME. Torts really is trying to jam a square peg in a round hole with this one.
@AnnoyingJoe Dorsett would've come in handy last night as well if he was healthy.
@thenyrblogneill I just read the whole comment stream with that McPhee dude and others - funny how we can all see the same things and draw different conclusions. In real time it looked innocent but in slow mo it seemed pretty clear to me that a reverse hit was initiated with the spin move leading with either the elbow or shoulder - made to look like an "accident" - but no way was he head hunting so I agree with you in principle and I hope Neal is OK. I hate the injuries but I like MDZ's game as of late. He's starting to play with a real edge which is helping his game and his team.
@Betweentheworlds The Pittsburgh feed showed the elbow plenty in slow-mo. Like I said to someone else, it appears DZ was in the midst of a spin move to get around Neal's incoming check, he just happened to hit Neal square in the chin with the elbow. We've all seen malicious elbows at one point or another. This just looked to awkward to be labeled as intentional.
@sureshore @Betweentheworlds @thenyrblogneill He was trying to jump back into Neal; I don't think he realized where Neal was and put the torque into his right shoulder. I don't think the elbow was intentional, but he sure did intend to hit him.
I hope Neal is okay. He looked genuinely stunned -- could be a concussion. The health of any player trumps my passion for the blue.
If Rangers finish 8th, last night's game sets up a fierce 1st round.
@nyrnyg17 The officiating was appalling last night which marred an otherwise great game - this is what leads to to retaliation, unnecessary injuries, "street justice" etc. They've got to call that garbage . there was that, the Boyle non call and a few others, but they're oh so quick to call the retaliation - then a player like Boyle winds up in the dog house. What the hell is he suppose to do, just let that shit go? You get pissed and get even. I hope torts gives Boyle a pat on the back and not a benching even though he could have lost the game for us
