Despite the Rangers excruciating loss to the Panthers last night, they actually received some good news in their hunt for a playoff spot as the ninth place Winnipeg Jets lost to the Washington Capitals, meaning the Blueshirts magic number is now two.
If the Rangers can gain just two measly points in their final two games (@Carolina on Thursday, vs. the Devils at MSG on Saturday) the Blueshirts are going back to the playoffs.
The Rangers can also back into the postseason if the Jets lose their lone remaining game at home against the Canadiens on Thursday or if the Senators lose their remaining three games.
If both the Senators (52 points) and Rangers (52 points) lose out and the Jets (51 points) win Thursday night, the Senators will be eliminated as the Rangers own the first tie breaker which is regulation/overtime wins (ROW).
Here are the standings...
...in typical Rangers fashion, they had to prolong their fans' agony by losing to the worst team in the NHL last night. And please God let them take care of business Thursday night in Carolina, because the last thing I want to see are the revenge minded New Jersey Devils standing in the way of a potential Blueshirts playoff berth.
...if you remember the Rangers beat the Devils on the final day of the 2010-2011 season to help earn a trip the postseason. Let's hope they don't need to go to that well again.
What's more concerning then not locking down a playoff spot, is that they had a chance to move up. That 6th seed can erase a whole season of mediocre play.
Do we really think the Rangers are going to all of a sudden turn it on and handle the Pens in the first round? That 8th seed is just as good as 9th.
I know its a constant juggling of lines, but after last night I would like to see a small change.
Clowe Stepan Callahan
Hagelin Brassard Nash
Pyatt Richards Zuccarello
Asham Powe Kreider
I also can't wait to see Boyle and Dorsett back, Kreider is out of place down there, and while I was recently behind keeping Powe on instead of Asham, the PK cannot get much worse right now...
Also, the reason I switched Clowe and Hagelin... I think Clowe will do better up with those two guys on what is a forecheck line, while Hagelins added speed will help Nash a lot more, just like it did earlier in the year.
Two more games, but it almost feels like Thursday is a must win, with the Devils on Saturday. I BELIEVE.... LGR
Everyone is focused on making the playoffs. The team should be focused on that 7th seed, which they relinquished control over last night with the loss. Making it in only to play Pittsburgh is not a good result. Boston or Montreal, as good as they've been, is a MUCH easier assignment imo. That loss last night was pathetic.
Nah, this team doesn't do anything the easy way, they'll need to beat the Devs to get in, resign yourself to it.
This scenario is exactly why I wanted to kill the Rangers fans in MSG who thought it was a good idea to chant "season's over" last Sunday. As much as I want to see those people get what they deserve, I hope I don't have to hear the same chant when I'm in the Garden on Saturday...
I hate today this, but after we "celebrated" knocking the Devils out of it I thought, wouldn't that suck if they returned the favor on the last game of the season in their own backyard? If we lose to Carolina and it comes down to beating the Devils to get in, we're done.
the game against CAR is astronomically important. The Jets play MTL at home, with MTL playing like absolute garbage lately, almost a guaranteed Jets win. If we lose against CAR, NJ will do ANYTHING in their power to send us golfing, and if we play like we did last night, they'll probably succeed. Fucking get it together.
@ry_man I'm going to be at the game on Thursday. They'll win.
@ry_man I do, but for a different purpose. Do and you play Washington, dont and you play Pitt. Only way that happens, starts with a win on Thursday! LGR
@rangersfan Honestly I think they can beat Pittsburgh. Will they? No clue. But if they play them the way they did in that home and home a few weeks ago, they definitely can pull the upset. I want no part of Montreal no matter how bad they are playing or how inexperienced they are. That building is a house of horrors for the Rangers. Boston is an interesting one. That would be another series that could go either way in my mind. Honestly, they just need to get in then anything can happen. Think of the Kings last year. I don't care what anyone says - if the Rangers can get it together, they are better than that team was.
@rangersfan In all honesty, I'd rather they miss than get swept by Shitsburgh. Either way, the only reason for us to even watch the Rangers' playoffs this year is their lack of a 1st.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Before last night, I was a post-trade deadline believer in this club. Last night was an eye-opener imo. Even though they arguably "outplayed" Florida, a good team, needing a win, would have beaten that team. All night, I kept thinking "they'll find another gear" the way good teams do. Nothing. I think it's a tough argument to say they're better than the Kings were last year.
As far as beating Pittsburgh: I agree they have a shot if Crosby's out, although they are still not as good a team as Pittsburgh ex Crosby. If Crosby's back, forget it. They'll get shellacked.
I look at Montreal the other way - yeah it's been a tough stretch for them there but that also makes them "due". Statiscally impossible for it to be so one-sided for much longer. And let's face it, Montreal is not as good a club as Pittsburgh.
@Josh6 @rangersfan I agree we definitely need Staal but we need Staal when he's in game shape, not returning after two months out. At this point, though, I'm not sure we will have him so all I was saying is hopefully Girardi and McDonagh were up to the task. I think they can do it. I don't expect to shut him down entirely (because no one really can) but I think they can handle him. We'll find out soon enough.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) @rangersfan You are joking right? He has played 43 games and has 59 points against us (20 goals, 39 assists). Not to mention he has 4 game winning goals, which is his most against any team. Safe to say he destroys us, while Malkin only has 37 points in 40 games. He is good, but Crosby KILLS us
@rangersfan There is always one bad team who gives us trouble so I don't take much stock in last night. To be honest, I'm surprised they beat them last week. I did say they needed to take it up a step to be that team. If they don't, obviously the Kings were better.
As for Pittsburgh, yes they are absolutely a deeper team up front. I would still take our goalie and defense over theres (even with how DZ is playing right now lol) and that might make the difference. No idea if they will win, but I think they have a chance. I could be wrong.
As for Montreal - look at the numbers, they've been due for a while lol. Sure we could beat them and I agree they aren't close to as good of a club as Pittsburgh but I feel more confident with our chances against Pens or Bruins. That's just me.
