With the Islanders (55 pts.) picking up a point in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Sabres last night they moved into the 6th seed ahead of the Rangers (54 pts.) and Senators (54 pts.). The Rangers now need a minimum of one point today to clinch at least the 7th seed.
The sixth seed is also a real possibility but there's a lot of scenarios that need to playout:
The Rangers clinch the 6th seed if,
- Ottawa gains no more than two points in their remaining games.
- Rangers win their final game in regulation or overtime.
Ottawa clinches the 6th seed if,
- They earn three or more points in its final two games.
- They tie the Rangers in points but finish with more regulation/overtime wins (Ottawa bested the Rangers in their season series, giving them the second tiebreaker.)
The Islanders clinch 6th seed if,
- The Rangers lose its final game.
- Ottawa does not win either of its final two games in regulation or overtime, and gains no more than 2 points combined
Here are the standings...
...because the Rangers need at least a point today vs. the Devils to get out of that dreaded 8th seed, I think Torts has to start Lundqvist.
Let Hank strut onto that ice and into that net for the screaming welcome he deserves. Build the lead and let him decide.
We have to beat 3 teams to get to the finals anyway. It wont be easy and we will have to face the Pens or a team that beat them at some point. It doesn't matter who we play if the ultimate goal is the cup. If the goal is to get as far as we can to gain some experience for next year, then it matters who we play.
What was their record after deadline?! Pretty good. Better than most teams. I'm excited and they have the roster to make a run. Don't watch if they won't make it past first round then.
I like the 8th seed. All of the "experts" will pick the Pens and I think we can and will beat them. They're such cocky bastards, they'll underestimate us, and after we kick their asses, I would love to watch Cindy and his submissive little lover i give up fleury of goal, crying and whining about how unfair life is. Did I mention, I HATE THE PENS! Bottom line, thEy don't scare me. I think we'll beat them.
Like every Rangers fan I can't wait for the playoffs to start and hope that the team gets hot and goes far. On the other hand, I also am a realist and this team has had serious issues the entire season. For example, is the PP going to get better suddenly? Yeah, I didn't think so, either. To me, seeding doesn't matter at this point, because if the team keeps playing like they have all year, they won't last past the first round. In order to avoid this distinct possibility, Hank needs a breather as he looked tired in the last game. For me, the decision to sit Hank is a no brainer.
Ride Hank. He's gone this far, why rest him now? I don't want the Pens in the first round. Let's go for 6 or 7. Let's go Flyers and Bruins today and tomorrow.
Got to say, you guys are making compelling arguments. Love the confidence. I still think the Rangers need to avoid the 8th spot.
The King rests today. Doesn't matter if we face the Pens in the first round or second does it? May be better to get them off the bat instead of letting them get rolling w/ Crybaby. Gotta beat the best to be the best, go out and prove NYR are the best. Besides we will beat Evil Marty and his mouseketeers w/ good Marty.
I really don't care if we face the penguins, only team I'd avoid would be the Habs because we haven't won a game there since 09 and they'd have home ice, so that's basically a guaranteed loss
@HJB91 if they dont scare you, then you dont know hockey. Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Iginla, Kunitz, Morrow, Letang.... I dont care if you think we can beat them... talent wise they are the best team in the NHL, and it is why they are the number 1 seed
@BrendyJohnson anyone the rangers play will have home ice and the habs have sucked lately I wouldn't worry about them that is the type of team the rangers would kill right now
