Despite being idle last night, the Rangers actually moved ahead of Ottawa into seventh place as a result of the Senators 3-1 loss to the Penguins. Both teams have 52 points, but the Rangers own the tiebreaker due to having more regulation/overtime wins.
Ottawa has three games remaining: @Capitals, vs. Flyers and @Bruins.
In another games of interest, ninth place Winnipeg defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 to pull them within one point of both the Rangers and Senators as well as one point from the Capitals who currently reside in the three seed as the Southeast Division leader.
Winnipeg has two games remaining: @Capitals, vs. Canadiens.
Washington has three games remaining: vs. Jets, vs. Senators, vs. Bruins
The Islanders have three games remaining: @Hurricanes, @Flyers, @Sabres
The Rangers have three games remaining: @Panthers, @ Hurricanes, vs. Devils
Here's what the standings look like...
...man, six through nine are nuts right now. The Rangers are one point from being out of the playoffs while also being one point from sixth place. This final week is going to take a couple of years off my life.
...just looking at the remaining schedules, even though they currently occupy the three seed and their remaining games are at home, I think the Capitals may end up being the odd man out.
...and amazingly enough, the Rangers actually still have a chance to end up in the fifth seed if the Maple Leafs completely fall apart.
A Rangers win combined with a Winnipeg loss tonight, clinches a playoff spot for the Blueshirts.
If they have any realistic shot at the Cup this year, they are likely going to have to go through the Pens and/or Bruins art some point. May as well be while they're on a hot streak. I don't care where they end up as long as they're in!
Not so sure I want the 5th seed, montreal has been awful lately but you all know how we play at their arena
One thing I did fail to mention is that if the Rangers win and the Jets lose the Blueshirts clinch a playoff birth.
I think the 6 seed>5 seed right now...lets play washington or Winnipeg in a 7-game series, as I feel our D can shutdown Ovi and we can outplay Winnipeg on a bad day.
Playing Montreal, where Lundqvist apparently hates to play, could end up being a heart-attack type series, which I could do without considering I am still recovering from last season lol.
Toronto plays the Lightning Wednesday and then the Panthers Thursday, so I don't really see them imploding. Highest realistic seed is 6th, which is pretty attainable. The Rangers hold the 2nd tiebreaker since they took 7 of 8 points against the Islanders, in case they end up tied in ROW. Just gotta get that extra point these next three games.
Wouldn't it be ironic if the Rangers end up in the 5 hole? That's where I think most of us picked them to be in the offseason. I really feel we will make it. Out of all of those teams we have the weakest schedule and are on the biggest roll coming into it. I hope that their locker room has razor sharp focus this week!
Remember last year when a 6 seed and an 8 seed were in the cup finals? You must not follow hockey enough to realize any time that makes it has a shot.
@scrangersfan Ah, there's nothing better than having some belief in your team, is there?
@gravey94 I want nothing to do with the pens. 1-3-1 vs them this year but since we aren't talking points for all intents and purposes we are 1-4 vs them this year. 2-1-0 vs the Bruins this year and 3-0-0 vs the the caps. 6th is obviously ideal but I would much rather play the B's first round. Original Six matchup and I would love to play the villain for that city. Also the way I look at it, if we play boston 1st round and lose at least it was against a respectable team with a lot of skill and depth. Losing to the caps 1st round would be losing to a lesser team in my eyes. Kind of a backwards way of looking at it but I would much rather play Boston.
@KevinDeLury LGR - LG Caps
@MannySanghera I think Winnipeg is more dangerous than Washington if we shut down Ovi. 3-0 vs Caps. 1-2 vs Jets
The Rangers have picked a good time to start coming on. If they start to build on what we've been seeing and Brad Richards is relevant again, we could do some damage in the post season, especially given favorable matchups, to address the original question.
@scrangersfan Think Kings fan thought the same last year? Playoffs are a different season .. you never know
a clinch would be nice
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG 5th seed seems like a long shot; though I don't consider Toronto a strong team if you can counter their clutch, grab and hit strategy with quickness
i want the 6 seed
@TruBluEsp @scrangersfan Never understand how people can NOT be excited for the playoffs, regardless of whether or not you think your team has what it takes to win the Cup. Hockey playoffs are easily the most exciting playoffs out of any sport, Super Bowl included, even though it's much bigger. Any chance you get to see your team in the playoffs is awesome. Cup-quality team or not, you never know when they'll make it again.
