According to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record, the Rangers organization was offended during Monday night’s first intermission at the Air Canada Centre when a video clip of Maple Leafs D Dion Phaneuf’s concussion-inducing hit on Michael Sauer was shown on the scoreboard.
Apparently, before the hit was shown, the segment host, in a Maple Leafs’ jersey, asked the Air Canada Centre crowd whether it wanted to see a particularly good hit by Phaneuf.
...absolutely disgusting. Good to know the Maple Leafs organization feels showing clips of players receiving career ending hits is the way they pump-up the crowd. Talk about poor taste. Showing that clip has put shame on the Leafs entire organization. Not that there isn't already after missing the playoffs nine straight seasons. Appalling.
...i hope the Rangers use this as extra motivation to pound the Leafs into the Garden ice tonight.
I really can't blame the team. I think the NYR video tech should fight the Leaf video tech in between periods. LOL
As a Ranger fan ... it was classless to show the hit (*IF they knew what it did to Sauer long term) ... but it was a clean hard hit. If you put your head down you're gonna get popped. Hope we get him back soon .. he's a gritty player and we could use him.
I say this as a Ranger fan, hockey is a rough game. Its not baseball! I love seeing highlights of bone crunching hits and knockouts.
I believe the headline should read "All Normal Human Beings Offended By Maple Leafs Showing Sauer Concussion Video to Pump Up Crowd." Disgraceful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd_wAVpo3Ew Nash will do this tonight
eh im not sure how i feel about this. Clean hit but theres plenty of other hits to show. Rangers are in the building... you can at least leave that hit out till the next home game. If it was the Crosby hit the league and all of Canada would be crying.
@TheNYRBlog Time to send Phaneuf into retirement.
That's just so over the top appalling! Unfathomable how that could be allowed. The leafs play such a miserable style, in a way I'm glad I'm going to miss tonight's game. We should have routed them last game with their goalie playing so poorly, and the domination of play but sloppy D and bad bounces added up. We got to move the puck more quickly tonight and hope the refs call all those interference penalties they missed last game. Hoping for a rout tonight.
@TheNYRBlog Any truth to the rumor that in response Gardenvision is showing a 5 year old Avery/Cuthbert sex tape tonight?
If the Rangers need to make an issue of this to get up for games that determine their entry to the post season, then there is a serious problem with the leadership on the team.
It was a clean hit, yes, it caused injury but it was a hockey play. Was it in poor taste to show it in a pre-game deal? Maybe according to some it was, I bleed Ranger blue and I don't have a problem with it. The Rangers need to get on the ice and do something about it.
HA. They didn't show the "Sauer concussion" video, they showed the "Phaneuf hit" video.Just like people dont flock to youtube to watch the "Lindross concussion video", they watch the "Stevens/Lindros hit" video. Not to mention, the Leafs aren't responsible for the pre-game videos. So, by responding by wishing the "Rangers pound the Leafs into the ground tonight" is really taking the high road: "Inflict pain on the innocent bystanders for wearing a jersey thats affiliated with an organization that made an unclassy move!"
Nobody's suggesting the hit was dirty. They are suggesting that it lacks class and tact to show a career-ending hit as a way to pump up a crowd.
I wouldn't say it was classless, more like clueless. It's probably some young intern or recent college grad that put it together whose boss reviewed it and didn't realize the hit caused Sauer a potential career-ending concussion. After all, do you really think anyone from Toronto is wondering about the health of Sauer...or even remember who the hell he is? Everyone's being way too sensitive. I seriously doubt that the Toronto organization or any of the players had any knowledge of the video.
Pretty classless move by the Maple Leafs organization. Hopefully the Rangers respond accordingly tonight.
fact of the matter is, despite the fact that sauer got injured, it was still a clean hit. yes its inappropriate to show a player getting injured but still...the hit was clean
@TheNYRBlog is the timetable for staal really 7-10days? That seems too good to be true?
The only appropriate response to this is to beat them on the scoreboard. I don't condone deliberate injury to other players. LGR!
@hockey_rules No shit, idiot. Did you read none of the other comments? Most people who stop to think agree with you.
However, don't you wish your own fans would be outraged if the shoe were on the other foot? This is a Rangers blog -- one of its purposes is to allow Rangers fans to vent. Why are you taking the time to sign up for this blog to merely act like an ass in anonymity? Your inability to see things from another's perspective -- while in their space -- ought to preclude you from speaking. Rise into adulthood, boy.
@hockey_rules when he says pound the leafs into the ground.. he clearly means on the scoreboard.. needle dick
@gravey94 Whether the Leafs organ i za tion knew about it is unclear, but a public statement and apology would be the classy thing to do.
@gravey94 You could be right Gravey, like I said above it's unfathomable. I would say this much though to the Leafs org. Do your homework!
@Jstevens1187 Not sure. He's skating again which is good, but vision still blurry.
@Hotfreak Um, I never said I dont see where this is coming from. I acknowledge the other side of the coin, and I'm telling you why its wrong. Also, precluding people from speaking is precisely what creates the ignorance of dissenting opinions. So, I ask you: why are you taking the time to sign up for this *comment system* to merely act like an ass in anonymity? Oh I know, because it's the internet.
@Jordan710_ Did he? My bad, I thought he was referring to something that had an outside possibility of happening. Kind of hard to pound someone on the scoreboard when your team can't score.
@Jordan710_ @hockey_rules Don't waste your time, Jordan. This gentleman either can't reason or can't express himself. Either way, his intention is merely to stir up trouble. When people decide to stir shit up around such a touchy issue, you know they are denying deeper personal problems by punishing others. Ignoring him is the best defense.
I apologize to everyone else for humoring him by responding.
@hockey_rules @Hotfreak either way there isnt really "another side of the coin" when 2 years later the guy is still having concussion symptoms and still cant lead a normal daily life.. its a scum bag move for the leafs organization to celebrate that hit.. obviously the leafs players had nothing to do with it but it looks bad on the organization as a whole.
