Update, 8:39 p.m.:
Nick Kypreos at Sportsnet reports that the plan is for the Rangers to extend Clowe and that the parameters of that potential deal are understood. If completed that would automatically make the 2014 pick to the Sharks a second round one.
Got to assume with Clowe's disappointing season the Rangers would be able to extend him for less than the $3.625 million he's currently making per year. Maybe the Rangers can offer him the $2.5 million per they didn't want to give Prust.
Ryane Clowe's agent just confirmed to me that Ryane gave Sharks authorization to move him to NY Rangers.

Today the Rangers acquired Ryane Clowe from San Jose for the Rangers' 2013 second and third round picks and a conditional 2014 5th round pick that becomes a second rounder if the Rangers resign Clowe or win 2 playoff rounds.
This season Clowe has yet to score but has eleven assists, 5 of those coming in his last 8 games.
Clowe will be an un-restricted free agent at the end of this season, completing a 4 year, $14.5 million contract.
Bit of a high risk, high reward move by the Rangers, but will be worth it if Clowe is able to regain his 50 point a season touch in time for the postseason.
Drooling over a possible Clowe-Miller-Callahan line... Is that too much to ask Torts?
Rangers now maxed out at 50 contracts... more moves on the way? Have Boyle and/or Pyatt played their last games in NY?

funny go to the sharks site and see how up in arms everyone is about this. Sather really did get away with one I feel.
now the rangers have the perfect 4th line. Clowe-Powe-Bickel with Eminger and gilroy on D. The no goals this season line!

Before this short and sad season began I said the Rangers were 3 players short of Lord Stanley unless Henry stands on his head and the team overachieves. With Clowe that would be one piece added, so now add another power forward who can stand up, wreak havoc around the net and score and a Dman who can acrually shoot a puck faster than 40mph and score a few and create deflections from the blue line and we're there IMHO - oh and get Gabby and Richey out of their funks. Clowe can play mean, force his will around the net and drop the gloves which is what's been sorely lacking. this should help the scorers as it's added security when you know someone's got your back, the lack of which could be a prime reason that our less physical scorers are slumping this year. The only thing I don't like about this is the draft picks - I think we had 2 3rd rounders this year (I could be mistaken) but we still don't get to choose in this very rich crop until the 3rd round. I hope we can get a 1st rounder for Boyle or Pyatt. Got to believe that Slats has something up his sleeve to just give away another possible piece of our future, but of course the other side of the equation is that most draft picks don't amount to much. Good move in my opinion.
The name being mentioned most in these comments is Prust....2.5 sounds pretty cheap right now vs draft picks...
If Clowe wants to quickly endear himself with the NYR fans, he can introduce himself to Matt Cooke at center ice tomorrow.
wow. i thought he was under contract next year too. and now to think , that with an extension in the works, we paid 3 (or 2) picks for 13 games at the minimum. i admit i dont know much about him but shit... sounds steep.
Imho, Clowe provides exactly what the R's need. I've watched him play for a long time. Yeah, he's slow, but no one -- and I mean no one -- will take shots and Ranger skill players without an answer. And Clowe can f*cking fight. As good a protector as there is in the league. Not only that but he actually has scoring/playmaking touch and will NOT shy from the front of the net. Excellent pick up, as long as they re-sign him. This is the enforcer you give the $2.5-3 mill to.
While we'll know in a month whether this trade was worth all the picks, you can't deny that Clowe brings some hardness this team is sorely lacking.
@TheNYRBlog You got my email a few days ago about Clowe right? I guess my "source" was right.
We can sure use the toughness but for a team that is desperate for goals, getting a guy with a goose-egg in that category is not promising. We could be getting a guy on his way down. Yet another 'admission' by Sather that letting Prust and Mitchell go was a mistake. The two of them would have come close to equaling Clowe's deal. GM's always forget that you can't buy heart and Prust bled Ranger blue baby.
To be honest, I don't know much about his game, but it sounds like he brings a lot to the table that we are missing. This move makes NO sense unless we are planning on extending him, so unless there is a buyout being planned for the summer, this isn't the last move we're going to see before the deadline.
@tygalpin can't tell if sarcasm or... ...come on man, Rangers have Lundqvist, Gaborik, Richards, Nash...
@MattAronowitz Funny - the retrun of the GAG line (Goose-egg a game)
@Hotfreak "Ohh Baby!!!"
@Hotfreak against parros AND he blocked a parros punch with his PALM. holy crap... give this guy his bucket of fish heads before a game and set him free on the ice!
@Hotfreak holy shit!
@Betweentheworlds With sather's track record, this should be a great move. Time will tell...
@AnnoyingJoe I think he is better than prust. 20 goals and 30 assists last 4 years plus the toughness of prust.
@thenyrblogneill Yeah, then get Sid the Infant to throw a tantrum
@IcyCup I hear ya. It's risky, but if he re-signs, we get one of the top protector's in the league for the duration of the Lundqvuist era. These guys don't drop off trees. Far superior player to Prust. He's a genuine heavyweight and he improves the offense in many ways.
@ShreddyMercury You're my new go to!
@coolandluke True, but our more skilled/less physical players may not be scoring as much because they fear getting leveled on any shift without a teammate who can stand up for them.
@coolandluke this guy better be more like Adam Graves than Brandon Prust, considering what we gave up. We could have had Prust for cheaper without giving up anything personnel-wise.
@ivanricov "With Sather's track record... wasn;t sure if that was sarcastic lol but in these type moves I agree he has been pretty on
@Betweentheworlds sid is eating soup through a straw for the next couple of weeks. kid's gonna lose some weight.
@ivanricov Got it! Cautiously optimistic!!
@Betweentheworlds track record with trades... free agents, not so much...
@IcyCup What happened. Is he injured?
