The New York Rangers (23-17-4) defeated the Buffalo Sabres (19-20-6) by the score of 8-4, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...only the Rangers could score 14 goals in two games and not look good doing it. Sort of a strange game with all the deflected goals and terrible goaltending. But as I said yesterday, two points are two points and watch out because not only are the Rangers gaining some confidence, they're finally getting some bounces. And those are two things, along with great goaltending, a team needs to make a long run in the playoffs
...i must have missed it in Page Six the other day. When did Richards get back together with Olivia Munn? Could be the ugliest four goals in a two game span in NHL history. But they all count the same and should give Richards a huge jolt of confidence going into the final week.
...i guess Torts blew it by not going with Biron in goal tonight. Hell, I could have played goal for the Rangers tonight and won.
...three points in two games for Clowe since I called him out. Who says these guys don't read the blog? lol
...when Stepan hits 50%, you know the Rangers opponent is awful in the face-off circle.
...2g, 3a in the last two games for Nash. Not a bad time to take his game to another level.
...what? No fight for Moore tonight. He really needs to take Del Zotto's spot on the second defensive pair.
...wonder if Stralman took Miller out for drinks after the game for basically handing him his first goal in 27 games.
...blow out win and Torts still plays McD and Girardi 25 minutes each.
...did the Rangers send Kreider back to the Whale before the game?
...you know the Sabres had an off night when even Pyatt shows up on the score sheet.
...Callahan proving once again he deserved the Steven McDonald award with a great effort at a big time to stop the Sabres run.
...the Rangers win eliminated the Sabres and Flyers from playoff contention and they could add one more team to their hit list as they can end the Devils hopes of getting back to the Stanley Cup Finals with a win again their cross river rivals on Sunday.
Is Step turning into a 70 to ppg player? As Kevin said he's not a great faceoff guy. If he could work on that in the offseason!? Then look out!!! And I agree about him being a selke nominee. There's no reason he shouldn't be in the running...but I doubt the NHL will acknowledge him.
I'm walking on air, just knowing that we ended the flyers playoff hopes. Now they could start planning the destruction of their team. I hope we get same old Homer and he actually makes his team worse while trying to make it better.
"...only the Rangers could score 14 goals in two games and not look good doing it. "
No words I can say...you put that perfectly sir
I think this year, a lot of the blame for the play of the Rangers has fallen on Brad Richards. Which is 100% fair with the money he is making, and I think he knows that to which is why he is pushing himself so hard to make things happens. Now that he is starting to produce, albeit only two games, it is kind of opening my eye to the real problem with the Rangers. If you look at their offensive producers, without Rick Nash, their top 3 producers are their centers. Their wingers are nowhere to be found. Callahan, Hagelin, Clowe, etc. Whoever you want to bring into the fold... they have been nowhere near consistent. I think in order for this team to be a great team, they either need a winger, or they need Cally or Hagelin to step up. Personally, I was hoping that would be Kreider, but I think between a mix of him underproducing and Torts not giving him a fair shake that will not happen. They need one or two of their wingers, maybe Zuccs too, but they need their wingers to start finishing. Even with Richards not playing his best hockey, having two playmaking centers is enougH. We need a finisher... and besides Nash, a couple of these guys have to step up... It shocks me that Cally is having such an average year, he needs to get his crap together down the stretch and start to light it. Funny how all this time the center position has been the problem, but now that we have it we can't get consistent play out of the wingers.... ugh will it ever end
Stepan has become a great player right before our eyes. He should be in the running for the Selke, he's that good defensively. Last night Torts said that Stepan could also have won the Macdonald award. High praise from the coach. Nash is also playing some great defense and his intensity has been inspiring.
However Del Zaster has been horrible in both games and I hope they unload him before next season. You're not going far in the playoffs with a second pair of DZ and Stralman. Moore needs to get moore minutes. Kreider is like a robot out there. Even with a 6 goal lead Torts didn't want to play him. Miller needs to replace him pronto. Btw, the Buffalo announcer said he'd just spoken with Staal who told him he'll be back very soon..
that giveaway by DZ that led to the Gerbe goal was disgraceful. Moore should be on the second pair. In addition, glad Richie's game is starting to pick up, who knows he might get burning hot in time for the playoffs! Weird game but oh well. Btw, anyone really know what Moore got the hat?
@TheNYRBlog devils play Flo Rida tomorrow: could they be eliminated before we even see them?
Strangest game I've seen for a long time, and I missed most of the 3rd because the power went out in the thunderstorm (I live in the Catskills).
I was expecting a 2-1 nail biter with 2 of the best NHL goalies and 2 desperate teams battling it out for every inch of ice. Shows how wrong you can be. I expected the Sabres to come out hard and take it to us. Hmm Buffalo, what ever you guys are smoking up there please pass it around. How could a team who'd been winning against good teams, who's fighting for their playoff lives come out so listless and flat???. Well.... After the 1st shot on Miller I was yelling at the Rangers to keep shooting on him as something looked off in his game, and yeah, deflections off the dmen's skates, bad bounces , yeah yeah but a goalies got to be in position and anticipate those and under no circumstances should anything go through his legs while he's not moving. Just bad fundamental goal tending from one of the best in the league. anyway happy for this win but still wondering how we'll do in this home stretch against a team who actually plays. Should find out Sunday. LGR
@TheNYRBlog the hat trick always brings the bitches back
2-0 with 14 goals in 2 games without Boyle. They had a great record without him as a healthy scratch earlier in the season. I know they haven't looked great in the 2 games, but the numbers don't lie, they are a better team without Boyle in the lineup
Pyatt didn't look so bad last night either. But again, that wasn't the best of games we've played so...I mean...I don't know. Maybe he's benefiting being on a line with a Richie who has gotten ugly goals and Zucc who continues to play hard?
Wait, who'd they play tonight?
Editors must be busy with a big story about something else... :)
@TheNYRBlog for the first time I'm so down for him
@shishya100 at this point, really think MDZ needs Staal back. They were a perfect pairing, the outgoing offensive d-man, and the hard hitting stay at home guy. People expect everything from MDZ, breaking up every play to scoring every night, kinda unfair really. He's an offensive d-man, not Alex Pietrangelo, although that turnover was HORRIBLE tonight, just think when Staal comes back all will be well.
@Bryansyanks That's a great point and you have the stats to back it up.
