The New York Rangers (17-15-2) defeated the Winnipeg Jets (18-17-2) by the score of 4-2, tonight. For a box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...if the Rangers can play like this for the final 13 games of the season, they're going to be a dangerous team. Unfortunately, based on what we've seen this season that's a big "if."
...as was the case last season, when this team is cycling and has their forecheck going they're actually a very good offensive team. Absolutely baffling why they refuse to do it sometimes.
...on a night in which Stepan has two goals, I was most impressed with the save he made in the first period.
...Ryan Callahan could have the most under-rated skill set in the league. Doesn't get sweeter than that move on the shorty.
...it really is a privilege to be able to watch a player with Nash's talent on a nightly basis.
...i guess Tortorella's "Wheel of Line Match-ups" came-up aces tonight.
...can someone get Zuccarello a shorter stick so he can stop high sticking guys in the face? In all seriousness, it's no secret that I haven't been Zuccarello's biggest advocate, but he's changing my mind real quick.
...and Gaborik seems like the beneficiary of the Zuccarello addition as he's been flying and is finding the puck on his stick in a position to score more often then not. Now he just has to start burying his chances.
...did I actually see McDonagh and Nash stick up for Lundqvist when he was run into by Wheeler in the first period? Nah, couldn't have been.
...does anything exemplify Richards' struggles more than the absolute whiff on the second period opportunity with a wide open net and no Jets defender within 10 feet of him? Actually, yes. The missed empty net in third period, when he inexplicably tried to shoot the puck through Byfuglien instead of taking his time and just burying it.
...assuming the press release for Kreider's re-assignment to the CT Whale is already written for tomorrow morning.
...Rangers had given up a power play goal in six straight games, re-enter Powe into the line-up and the PK is a perfect 5-for-5. Also helps when the Jets have Perry Pearn behind their bench.
...who else am I forgetting? Hmmmmmmm. Oh yeah, Lundqvist. He was pretty good tonight.
...McDonagh with what could be a season saving play on the 5-on-3. If he doesn't intercept that pass it could have been game over right there. Instead Callahan ties it up with a short-handed goal and away they go.
...got to give the defense credit for bouncing back after a shaky first period which saw numerous Jets naked in front of Lundqvist. And seriously, it's time to call the Hamrlik claim a disaster and re-insert Gilroy on defense.
...five blocked shots and three hits for Girardi. Just another day at the office.
...home and home with the Penguins starting on Wednesday night at MSG. Doesn't get bigger than this folks.
I got so excited on Stepan's first goal that I scared the piss out of my roommate and he came sprinting in asking me what was wrong.
But in all seriousness, I hope these fools can keep it up. I was excited to be a Ranger fan last night again. Hopefully they weren't pulling an April Fools joke on us.
I liked the lines. I like what Zucc brings, minus the penalties. The players you want scoring, scored...minus broadway (the empty net attempt was hilarious) and gaborik, though gaborik looks good. The PK finally stepped up. Henny was great.
I think the hobbit gave them the lift they needed when they are down. That short shit was all over the ice. Now if he can keep his stick down, we might get something going here.
Zucca makes up for the playmaking that Richards doesn't have -so we have a top 6 player added.Richards is not completely numb so he now makes up for the loss of
Dubi or AA.
We might have enough now to win our way into the playoffs and do some damage.Keep the stick Zuke-don't change anything -you played the exactly the way the Ranger's need.
THe PK was huge tonight... not just because of the SHG.
what a great game to build off of going in to a couple of real tough ones. it should be very entertaining and i think that just about anything can happen to be honest with you. we shall see. the pens are missing a couple of guys and i think that malkin isnt 100% in the head this year due to a concussion (which probably wont mean much since he's such a sick [yet dirty] player).
@TheNYRBlog The Rangers are consistently inconsistent this year and expecting that to continue.... Not suckering me again.
Before we start sizing the rings up let's see how they play vs the Pens. Pittsburgh has owned the Rangers the last few years but especially this one. Our D is way too slow when Hamrlik is in there. I agree that we should insert Gilroy, at least the man can skate and against the Pens we can't be flat-footed. Amazing that Sather was willing to dole out 3.5 Million pro-rated for Hamrlik but didn't want to pay a Black & Blue player like Prust. For my money, the biggest difference btwn last year and this year's squad.
We can't fall into the one good game, two bad anymore. There is no more margin for error. Let's face it if we sneak in as a 7th seed or 8th seed we'll be done in 5 games at most if we play the Pens or Canadiens- we just don't match up well with either of those teams. Please spare me the LA Kings as 8 seed last year- that was a team with grit and polish.This Ranger team has no where near that talent level of compete those Kings had. Our only shot is if we go on a roll and grab the 6th seed then play the SE winner- at least we'd have a shot although I do like the way the Jets play with speed and size. The Canes are also tough on home ice. Let's get there first.
This may be the first time I am truly excited for the next game, I think this team turned a corner on that 5 on 3 PK, and I cant wait to play the Pens on Wednesday.... LGR
@TheNYRBlog u may be right about the Avery saving another season with his big mouth
@TheNYRBlog if they keep it up the Avery talking might have saved another season
If we beat the Pens in the next two games, NYR Blog comments section will be in Plan The Parade Overdrive Mode
that should be a big IF...it would be nice to see them play like this on a regular basis...they would be where Chi, Ana, and Pitt are IF they did all season
@TheNYRBlog huge if
@TheNYRBlog happy recap
@gravey94 It's early.
@coontzbloontz Who was that number 16 for the Jets? Talk about not backchecking holy shit.
@PenaltySh0t Did he hit the net?
@_Jack have liked him since day 1...amazing how good he plays when given a regular shift
@_Jack Dammit, the guy is making me like him. lol
@KevinDeLury @tygalpin don't forget "the others" will be coming from over at the front runners blog. Any comment with yinz, malkincookies, crosbysjockrocksmysocks, or any gif's will be overlooked by yours truly.
@BrendyJohnson @_Jack he's showing his stuff thanks to torts actually letting him play - aside from the penalties he was a solid top six performer!!!
@KevinDeLury @_Jack amazing. Three penalties and he still comes out smelling like a rose. Let's hope it isn't just early adrenaline.
@AnnoyingJoe "early adrenaline" or how he really plays? Remember Kreider and JT Miller coming out banging when they joined the team? People blamed Torts for reeling them in...not saying this will be the case but...yeah.
@sureshore MZA had three penalties and still more TOI than Gaborik. Dude hustles.
