The New York Rangers (25-18-4) defeated the Carolina Hurricanes (19-24-4) by the score of 4-3 in overtime, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...welcome to the playoffs Rangers fans!!!!!!! As has been the case all season, the Blueshirts didn't make it easy on their fans tonight, but who cares. They're in the playoffs and anything can happen.
...Ryan "Mother Eff'n" Callahan!!!!!!!! That is why he's the best captain in the NHL.
...no one more relieved in the building to see Callahan bury that one than Matt Gilroy.
...for one of the few times this season, we saw the resiliency that defined last year's squad.
...it's bad enough Sanguinetti was a first round bust for the Rangers. Now he knocks out Clowe?
...as my friend Fleisch texted me, when did Zuccarello become Sean Avery?
...if Stepan isn't a first line center, I don't know who is.
...someone ask Richards for tomorrow's lotto numbers, because this guy has a little bit of luck going on right now.
...raise your hand if you actually thought Brassard would replace Gaborik's goal scoring after the trade.
...as has been the case his entire Rangers career, the Blueshirts don't sniff the playoffs this year without Lundqvist.
...he may have had two assists in the game put that ill advised pinch and give away on the Ruutu goal was truly Del Zasterous. And Torts still somehow decides to play him seven more minutes than Moore.
...awesome to see Nash step up again in the big....oh wait.
...Torts getting Girardi prepared for the playoffs with 30 minutes of ice time.
...listen, this is a flawed team who just put their fans through one of the great all-time roller coaster seasons, but the bottom line is that the Rangers went 9-3-1 in the month of April and now have as good of a chance as anyone to win the Stanley Cup.
...Rangers win combined with Islanders loss, puts the Rangers in seventh place. No chance for fifth, but sixth place a real possibility.
...season finale Saturday afternoon at MSG against the Devils.
I seriously thought that Zucc and Skinner were gonna go. I was really hoping that they would. I bet Skinner would have gotten his ass kicked.
Secondly, why does Skinner seem to throw his biggest hissy fits against the Rangers? Always seems to be on his period or somethin.
I'd just like to point out that Brad Richards did something on the PP that has not been done a whole lot this year. He got down on 1 knee and kept the puck in the zone on a Carolina clear attempt...5 seconds later the tying goal is scored. Amazing what keeping the puck in the zone on a PP can do.
Also, what did Gilroy do? Why is he done? @Josh6 ?
Why on earth is Torts using Girardi on 1st power play unit? It's obviously not working, and with Danny getting 30 min a game it's only putting more wear and tear on our defensive rock. McDonough, Stralman and Moore are all better suited for those minutes. Conserve No. 5 for the situations where he really excels (basically every other game situation)
Watching the highlights above, just before the 2nd goal the announcer says "...a battle of giants, Jeff Skinner and Matts Zuccarello." WHAT! lmao!
Somebody else mentioned it below, but I'll bring it up as a topic for conversation, not just my opinion...
Who do we want in the first round? Pittsburgh, Boston(Montreal), or Washington?
I vote Pittsburgh. I think we out play them physically, their finesse doesn't capitalize on our strong D and Hank, and we out-shoot them, getting some puck-luck against Flower.
Boston would be my second choice; it would be an incredible series, it would go 7 games, and it would come down to puck-luck in the end. They match our physicality, and Rask has been pretty solid. It would be a gritty series, only downside is, whoever comes out of it the victor, is going to be banged up and exhausted.
Washington is my third; They're red-hot. Ovechkin has always had Hank's #, and they'll come at us with a speed and tempo that we won't match. They'll dominate us in my opinion, especially after last season, they'll be looking to make it a quick series, and we'll be on our heels the whole time playing Torts' style (which I don't mind, just saying that some systems work well against certain teams, and others don't).
Lastly is Montreal for me; They're my dark-horse in the playoffs. Although they're by no means an underdog team, they haven't gotten much public attention recently; they've kinda just keep trucking along all season quietly battling Boston for the NE title. They haven't been hot recently, but I think they turn on the after-burners come round 1, and completely shock whoever their opponent is (TOR).
Long post, sorry. Opinions?
A lot happened in this game. What about the boards and the bounces? What about Clowe? The drama.... the intrigue.....
Our new "Captain Clutch." Callahan really has turned into a younger, more blue-collar version of Drury. He's developing his offensive finesse game so much over the last 2 seasons, without losing his blue-collar, hard working, give up the body attitude. If he's not your favorite Ranger, I don't know what you're smoking (unless you're into Hank, that's the only other viable option).
Man guys, our Derek Stepan is not going to come cheap next year. He is a top 10 center at the moment and the lowest I can see him getting right now is 4.5 million for 5 years.
"...listen, this is a flawed team who just put their fans through one of the great all-time roller coaster seasons, but the bottom line is that the Rangers went 9-3-1 in the month of April and now have as good of a chance as anyone to win the Stanley Cup." Tell it how it is, Kev!
Captain Callahan with the biggest regular season goal in my lifetime. Whats left to say about this guy? He's the f*ckin greatest.
Your recap nicely recaps what I am certainly feeling. I just hope the team finds a way to get hot like the LA Kings, though I know better. I was wrong about Zucc... I just didn't think he would make that much of a difference. I was right about peddling Gaborik, however. The team has been much better since his departure. I wish Gabby well, but it was time for a change for him and for the Rangers.
Hey Kevin, what did you mean with Zucc becoming Avery? Is he that good in harassing the other team or does Torts have issues with him? (I hope the first! didn't see the game last night so..)
A big win, another "BTW prediction" comes true (barely) and we're in. Congratulations to the NY Rangers!!! Other than the defensive miscues the boys looked real good tonight. How fitting that "the man" brings it on home!
WHat happened to Clowe? I missed it,
Just want to say, I think the trade deadline move was fucking brilliant. I am really loving this team right now. Zuccarello, Clowe, Brassard, Moore. All of these guys have really stepped up and made the team much better. Add in one of the best Captains in the NHL, elite goaltender, premiere power forward, and a solid D corps. Now that is a team that could actually do some damage in the playoffs... we're catching fire at the right time, guys!
I am going to say it and say it once. Gilroy is done with us, and with the Newbury call up that is confirmed.
The most important thing now... .Looks who is going to get top 6 time in the playoffs... the one Torts hates... Chris Kreider. And you know what, when he was on the ice tonight, he was skating faster than he has all year. I think he could be an X factor just like last year, and I would love to see him play with Brassard and Nash....
CHRIS KREIDER MCPHEE... the Rangers savior ;) but clowe will be missed
a game to remember for sure. very very happy that we're in the door. im proud of the team.
clowe. his face looked slack as he was helped off of the ice.
who gets the final game off to rest. the devils will be coming hard, with elbows up. players will be leaving their feet on hits. boarding. charging. fights. whoever is in goal will get run like hell. they have nothing to lose.
they have nothing to lose.
I was sitting right behind the net Callahan scored in. And Nash was a beast in the 3rd. Can't believe he didnt tuck one home during the 3rd. Lundqvist got beat by 2 absolutely perfect shots and a gorgeous passing play. I was looking right on line with Ruutu's shot and if it were 2" higher or wider, it was clanking iron and not going in. The passing play just made me say "Wow." Boy was I relieved that Richards got that one in. I was beginning to think I was going to have to listen to my friends who are Hurricanes fans talk a whole bunch of crap. Girardi had some HUGE hits tonight. Absolutely HAMMERED Jeff Skinner in front of the Canes bench during the 2nd. He also NAILED Jared Staal in the corner during the 2nd. What can I say about Ryan Callahan. I swear I leaped 10 feet out of my seat when I saw that puck go in. I then proceeded to high five every person in Rangers apparel on my way out of the arena.
@AG_Blue your kidding right? 2 penalties in 3 mins of TOI, and one changed the complexion of the game
@AG_Blue no one knows. Thought he took an elbow to the head, but brooks said it may be a leg injury like a pulled hammy... No word yet
My son and I always ask the exact same question - Girardi on the power play? - why on earth is right. That said, I'm also disappointed that McD hasn't progressed offensively from the point the way I'd expected. He's good and all on the rush, but from the point it seems he dumps it in the corner or around the boards rather than get off any shots with purpose. Maybe that's what Torts teaches, but I think Moore is a better choice at this time.
@fluff118 Even though we lost the 2nd game we owned the Pens in the back to back (without Sid) - we can take them depending upon which "Cybil Fleury" shows up. Think Boston would be our hardest opponent going in, Montreal our easiest "house of horrors" has no power in playoffs
@fluff118 My order is Montreal, Washington, Pittsburgh, Boston. Price has been playing terrible lately. While the Bell Centre has not been kind, I think Hank would exercise his demons in the playoffs. for the Caps, I think they could neutralize Ovechkin and then just have to deal with Holtby. For the Pens it all comes down to which Fleury shows up, but their offense scares me. I don't like Boston because of their size and I think if Rask gets hot he could be a game-changer, much like Hank.
However, all that being said, by no means do I hope we lose on Saturday vs the Devils, we need all the momentum/confidence we can get (the boys should be flying out there with the kind of confidence and relief and no-pressure they all talked about in post-game interviews) going into round 1.
@ForEachNYR Yes, the first. He was being a big time pest and while the Cane were preoccupied with going after him Brassard scored. Very Avery-like.
@Josh6 This was the first time I had the opportunity to see the kid in person. My GOD IS HE FAST. I'd pay a $5 to see him and Hags race.
@Josh6 As much as I've been on Torts case this year I like his handling of kreider - get him to practice with the team, watch the games from the bench except for his 4 minutes, learn, - now an injury has opened up a space. I think he's ready now and I'll be surprised if he does not contribute in the post season. Maybe he should have done that with MDZ this year. I like his game, especially when he gets nasty but these mistakes and poor judgment plays are getting old. Can we bring up McIlrath and let him sit a game or 2??? LGR. Zucc looks like he's on fire.
@Josh6 Agree on Krieder. Like him in the top 6 rather than buried on the 4th. Does not look so good for Clowe. Really need his toughness in the playoffs. Hate to say it but Boyle seems to be adding by subtraction. If he comes back he better be glued to the 4th line and PK or Torts should be looking for a new job.... Also, what is he smoking bringing Gilroy in on the 4th line? Saw that before the game and just groaned. So many better choices. Heck, not having a full 4th line would have been better...
@nyrfan747 That's what happens when you write these things at 1am. Thanks for the heads-up.
@IcyCup Call up the entire Whale team for the game. lol
@nyrfan747 Sounds like fun!
@nyrfan747 nice! way to represent!
No, not kidding at all. I was not permitted to watch the game in peace last night. After the first period I missed quite a bit.
We don't match up well against Pittsburgh. Except for the one recent game after the Gaby trade when all our new guys scored, they always beat us. They beat us every other game this season, including two 3-0 shoutouts, and last year they beat us in four out of 6 meetings. That 6-1 blowout was an anomaly. Pittsburgh is a bad matchup for us.
I hope we can snag 6th place and play Washington.
@KevinDeLury @ForEachNYR But he was hardly being a pest akin to Avery's style... He was just playing hard-nosed/gritty. It was Skinner that was causing trouble, and LaRose who caused the scrum after the goal. Canes were just playing chippy at that point in the game. I didn't see MZA do anything to get under their skin.
@IcyCup I proudly represent every time they're in Raleigh. Always a lot of Ranger fans representing in Raleigh.
@Betweentheworlds @greggray24 @IcyCup @Josh6 Lets not get carried away with those two wins. Crosby was out so was letang and Martin as wel as Neal for part of second game. They are playing well again. Crosby coming back. Ill worry about them in round 2. If I had to choose between Washington or Pittsburgh ill take Washington. Will give us an extra round to get Dorset and staal back.
@greggray24 @IcyCup @Josh6 We should go for it. Don't think Hank needs to rest, they should probably play their best guys and go for it.but I wouldn;t mind playing the Pens though. We totally dismantled them in the back to back and got 3 pts. Yes they're a different team with Cindy the kid in there but with Sybil Fleury between the pipes they can be had.
@IcyCup @Josh6 Dont want to end up in 8th place. Sat is still a big game. A win puts in at least 7th and possibly 6th as we have the tie breakers.
