The Rangers eliminated the NJ Devils from playoff contention with a 4-1 victory at the Garden today. For a box score click here.
Wins don't feel much better than that. Especially against a bitter rival who eliminated you from the playoffs just a season ago and found themselves on life support. Sweet, sweet revenge...
Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye.....
Something had to have been said the Ranger locker room after the Flyers loss last Tuesday.... 18 goals in the last 3 games??? Someone flipped the Rangers playoff switch to 'on.'
The Rangers lead the NHL with 41 goals in the month of April. Sometimes coaching is the issue, sometimes its personnel. I think the answer as to why the Rangers were struggling scoring goals has become quite obvious.
Torts can't talk enough about board play and how the Rangers need to generate offense along the wall. That point couldn't be more relevant on the Rangers first two goals. On the first goal, Hagelin kept the puck away from two Devils behind the net and found Callahan for a quick wraparound goal.
With the second goal, completely set up by Ryane Clowe, Clowe shielded the puck along the boards behind the Devils net and a couple passes later, Stepan tipped a McDonagh wrister past Marty for the 2-0 lead twelve minutes into the first.
Where did Taylor Pyatt get those hands? Sick snipe thanks to a gorgeous setup from Richards. 27 game goal drought snapped.
By the way, Brad Richards is 4-3-7 in these last 3 games. Rangers better hope this continues because you cam now see how dangerous this team truly is when he is productive.
Monster game from the Captain, 2 goals today in addition to hitting every red jersey in his sights and even negated an icing late with the game well in hand. What a stud.
Girardi's hit on D'Agostini in the first period was so hard it knocked him back across the Hudson to NJ. D'Agostini was even called for a penalty in same play.
Only glaring mistake the Rangers made was the goal against. Stralman got caught just a bit too far up the ice to negate the shutout. Oh well...
Hank wasn't tested a whole lot outside of the first 10 minutes of the second period. Excellent job by the Rangers to weather that storm which everyone knew was coming after the Devils awful first period.
As inconsistent as the Ranger power play has been this year I was concerned about New Jersey's ability to score shorthanded goals which they've done alot this year. Fortunately, that issue was never raised.
If Winnipeg loses in regulation tomorrow or Tuesday, the Rangers can clinch a playoff spot with a non shootout win against the Florida Panthers in their next game on Tuesday.

I'm gonna be the one to say it, John Moore has really been exceptional these last few games. Torts is getting him more minutes (on the PP please, anyone but DZ), and he's been a plus player 4 straight games. Sweeet.
At the game and the best feeling of the year was giving NJ that early ticket to golf! oh and Pete being thrown out!
perhaps Kreider is starting to get it. He had two monster hits, one of which took out two men. His speed is awesome. If he can put it all together,.....
Lets just keep taking care of business and we'll b good to go when we're officially in the playoffs......I live in Florida and last season I flew up to NY and went to 3 playoff games, would love to do it again...Teams that are hot going into the playoffs are the most dangerous...hopefully that's us....LETS GO RANGERS
I could not see the game today but I heard to important news flashes:
1. Hell froze over
2. Taylor Pyatt scored a goal
Just glancing at Niell's comments on the game, not negating those comments or the Rangers play at all but it seems to me that during their scoring droughts they were playing against one hot goalie after another and hitting a lot of posts and getting bad bounces and so on but now the goal tending against as of late has been putrid. I suspect Marty was shabby as well since he has not been good since coming back from the injury, but I didn't watch and don't know for sure. Anyway good signs for sure but not getting carried away by this sudden scoring explosion just yet. In the end it all balances out. LGR
Great win. I have so much more confidence in this team when Richards is on his game. If we have our top guys playing well we are going to be very dangerous. I will be interested to see if Nash has the extra gear in the playoffs since he has only had to dig to find it once in his career. Would be so nice not to have the season come to the last game. Let's hope we can clinch on Tuesday. Let's get it done boys.
Looking at point totals .....
If we look at Clowe and the guys from Columbus and include their point totals from their previous teams ...
Clowe is 3-15-18, tied with McDonagh (4-14-18) for 7th on the team in points
Brassard is 10-17-27, good enough for 4th on the team in points, 1 better than our Captain and 3 behind Brad Richards
John Moore has a goal and 3 assists, all for us except 1 a in cbs. He's looked good, I'm a fan already.
Our top ten point totals with three games remaining :
Del Zotto 19
(there are 12 players listed because there are two pairs of tied point totals)
Looks like Staal was making things happen with 2-9-11 in 21 games. It would be great to have him competing once again.
Amazingly, Stepan has just as many points as Nash, 3 fewer goals and 3 more assists.
Who would've guessed Pyatt would cap off the top ten with 9 points (5g, 4a) in 45 games.
Brian Boyle is 2-3-5 in 38 games, and a -13. He does a lot of the "other things," including winning faceoffs and playing good minutes on the PK .....
by the way, Gaborik has 26 points (12g, 14a), tied with our Captain, and a point behind Brassard.
Dubinsky is 1-14-15
Anisimov is 11-7-18
Prospal is 11-16-27
Erixon has 5 assists
Prospal, huh? Only Brassard (same point total) approaches his level of celebration.
Nothing better than beating the KC Scouts and exposing Fat Boy for the overprotected fraud that he has been for 20 years. 20 shots = a win over Lardass Brodeur, always been the case. The King of the wraparound/floater/bellyflop/bad angle goals against, the goalie with the most LOSSES in NHL history while facing the fewest shots.
ummm... everybody's been saying it, but we're happy to welcome you to the club.
@shishya100 and he wasn't, you know, playing on the 4th line lol
@Betweentheworlds Hell only dipped into the 40s last night...it'll freeze when snake-bit Darrell Powe pots one. Poor guy's stuck on 0.
Pyatt is 5th on our team in goals ...
@AG_Blue Also, the question I would ask is would it have been better if we just traded Gaborik for Nash straight up? Kept some chemistry and just traded a finesse player for a equally skilled but more consistent power forward? Dubi and Anisimov might have been producing more for us than they are now for CBJ. Just a thought. Opinions?
@AG_Blue Hasn't dubi been hurt a lot thou?
@AG_Blue For all the struggles of Richards this season, he has 30 points. More than Brassard and Callahan. I'm glad he is contributing more now thou. We need him.
@AG_Blue I know the trade at the deadline had a lot of people pushing the panic button. But come on...if anyone doesn't think we absolutly won that trade then they need to be locked up. I love that you posted this. Stepan is gonna want a huge raise!
@AG_Blue glad to be a part of it :P just feel like I talk about him too much lulz
@mvmone We should run a little contest - who will guess what year Powe will net his first
@AG_Blue OK AG - that is pretty pathetic to say the least! I'm doing the math now, yes, but you must not be counting Gabby but of course all his goals game in the 1st few games except today (I think it's been over 20 games since he's had a goal), and obviously he doesn't have bad hands - that was a nice goal. If he could start chipping in now it would be great. Early in the season I thought he was a good catch.
@ivanricov @AG_Blue No way they'd do a nash Gabby swap after last season. They were looking for someone to take some of the scoring load off Gabby cause both his good seasons his production fell off toward the end, due to injury and fatigue. Who would have predicted the decline of Gabby this year unless you buy into the one year on one year off theory, or had some insight with his injury history and surgeries.
yes, Dubi has only played 26 games
My bad, I didn't realize you were such a vocal proponent, but there are a few ... Yeah, keep talking about him. He's been a great surprise coming out of this trade. I really hope the kid keeps it up and every indication is that he will.
@Betweentheworlds @mvmone my guess game 3 of the Stanley cup finals this year, in the third period of a 2-2 game against either Vancouver or LA
So, three in the beginning, one mid-season, now maybe we can have a little flurry at the end?
@AG_Blue TP's first in 27 games. LGR
yes, not counting Gaby, and 3 out of 5 of his goals came early, he had another one a little while back. It'd be great if he could chip in some more, that goes for a lot of guys.
Dubi is in or entering his prime; he'll be 27 a week from today. Kind of amazing when you think about it, because he's been around for a while -- this is his 7th season in the NHL.
Artie turns 25 next month, so he's older than some of our kids, and this is his 5th NHL season, but their is more untapped potential upside there.
@PenaltySh0t @AG_Blue @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG He's young and can learn. Dubi gets hurt a lot too, and so does Cally (maybe not in the same way) but as Cally gets older now he is learning to be more discerning on when and how to give up his body I believe. Artie's a good player but you got to give something to get something
@Betweentheworlds @AG_Blue @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG unfortunately Artie can't stay healthy for his life. Remember how he used to always get clobbered in NYR with his head down (Brad Stuart's hit most notably)? Has that same problem, caught with his head down way too often, he's been injured a lot because of it.
@AG_Blue @GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG This is good to see. Who would have thought Prospal would be the big winner. Not surprised Arty has 11 goals - he's a good player and it was tough to see him go along with the character of dubi was a huge loss but Vinnie? Who knew. Yes Glen - that was an easy win. As much as I love Gabby once I sat with the news and looked at what we got I knew that we won that trade. Wish Gabby could have stayed. He save our butts 2 out of the 3 years he was here (and his off year we missed the playoffs) problem is Gabby's injury prone, and given his lackluster return from shoulder surgery made him a huge gamble. Still from CBJ's viewpoint they got another big name to replace Nash so they've got to be feeling pretty good about the trade too. I hope he does become a 40 goaler again, but again, he gets injured a lot. Good move Slats!
pardon my sloppy typing on McDonagh's name
