The New York Rangers (21-16-4) defeated the New York Islanders (21-16-5) by the score of 1-0 in overtime, tonight. For a box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...WOW!!!!! If you're a fan of hockey, it doesn't get better than that game right there. Skating, hitting, scrums after the whistle, it had it all. Oh yeah, and a Rangers win. The rivalry is officially back!
...and of course, in a game where you thought we'd never see a goal, the least likely player gets it with a pinpoint perfect shot.
...guess Lundqvist was saving the shutout for the biggest game of the season.
...sick pass by Brassard on the winner. Not sure the Rangers had anyone who could make that play earlier this season.
...the sweet sound of goal post was like music to my ears all night.
...which Islander pissed in Powe's cereal this morning?
...bravo to the crowd at the Coliseum. Electric atmosphere.
...i know Asham negated a Rangers power play, but I loved that, for what seemed like the first time all year, he stuck up for a teammate.
...Tavares is going to see McDonagh in his sleep tonight.
...one thing that has taken me off guard with Nash's game is his willingness to mix it up. Very impressed by that.
...thought the officiating was atrocious on both sides.
...the Rangers power play is going to suck for a very long time if Del Zotto continues to play the point the way he did tonight. Five blocked shots though. So at least there's that.
...great vibes after the win, but let's not kid ourselves, the Rangers offense wasn't exactly reminiscent of the Oilers in the late 80s tonight.
...in a game chock full of physical play, I expected more from Clowe.
...that's as close to a playoff game you're going to get and exactly how the Rangers want to play. So get used to this style from the Blueshirts in the remaining seven games and beyond. Great defense, Lundqvist and timely scoring. It worked last season and Torts finally has them playing that way again.
...couple of days off till another rivalry game in Philly on Tuesday.
""...one thing that has taken me off guard with Nash's game is his willingness to mix it up. Very impressed by that.""
I have a bit of a different take on Rick Nash. His physical game has all but disappeared.
Nash has recorded 43 hits on the year.
In the first 12 games of this year....Nash recorded 26 hits. In 5 of the first 12 games, he recorded 3 hits or more. Out of the first 12 games, there was only 1 game where he didn't record a hit. Some of those hits he threw...he blasted people. Big, clean hits. He was putting that 6'4 ..215-220lb frame to good hockey use.
Then came the Boston game and the Milan Lucic hit.
Since the Lucic hit, Nash's physical game vanished.
His stats since the Lucic hit....25 games...only 17 hits. And in 11 of those 25 games...he recorded 0 hits. In the last 10 games played...6 of the 10 games...0 hits.
The playoffs are coming. Nash has got to pick up his physical game. Complaining to the Ref and linesmen will do you no good come playoff time. It's all hands on deck. Everyone has to sacrifice in order to make a deep run. Opposing teams are going to be gunning for Nash. The physical play against him in the Maple Leafs series and Islander game is just a taste of what's coming his way.
Nash needs to pick up his physical play not just for the team's sake(causing turnovers..rushed passes..etc)...but for his own sake(creating space for himself..imposing his will...intimidation of smaller players..etc.)
Message to Nash...they're going to hit you at every opportunity come playoff time...so you need to respond...not with your stick..or by running your mouth....but by using your body. This will not only help your game come playoff time....but it will help your hockey team overall in the playoffs.
Brassard needs to play with Nash, it was a great shot by girardi but brassard created the whole play. Lured the defense to him an floated that beauty backhand pass tape to tape. This guy is the real deal play maker and torts needs I see if him and Nash will click.
@TheNYRBlog hank bought us time to get into a groove. What a game, thanks to my wife who let me watch as she returned from a business trip.
Incredible! You actual saw a 3rd Defensive Pair play actual minutes in the 3rd period of a big game with Torts. About time.
@TheNYRBlog is the first day in a new apt with no cable service yet a valid excuse? :(
Missed watching the game with everyone here last night. Had to watch it when I got home..thank goodness for DVR...greatest invention since the airplane. :) At least I got to fast forward through commercials and the intermissions.....finally got to bed around 3am.
First off.....big win gang!! Two big points right there. I''ve been watching the Islanders all year. And I've said it before...... Capuano deserves Coach Of The Year honors. Ever since Capuano read his team the riot act and told them.."If we don't play physical..we can't win. If you don't hit....you will not play"...the team has turned it around. He enforced his "must play physical" edict with the benching of several players.... and the team has bought in 100%. Also, the Islanders D has tightened up greatly. It's also no coincidence that their Defensive play has become stronger since the return of Carkner to their line-up. They suffered from the lack of a physical presence in front of their net. Carkner is the crease clearer they lacked for most of the year because of injury.
Young, fast, physical....defense coming together....good goal tending....confidence growing on a daily basis. If they make the playoffs...they are playing with house money....no pressure...nobody expected them to be any good...
This Islander team could surprise a couple of teams in the playoffs.........
As much as I loved the win...if we play these kind of games throughout the playoffs, I'm going to die a very young man. WE WANT CUP! WE WANT CUP! WE WANT CUP!!!
That was a classic Rangers win reminiscent of last season. Lots of time spent stuck in the defensive zone, lots of blocked shots, stellar play from Lundqvist, and a really nice goal off of a rare defensive lapse from the opposition.
Even though the Islanders played better and had significant stretches of time with the puck, you gotta hand it to the Rangers for scraping out a win against a VERY hot team (8-1-1 before last night). I think that was without a doubt the most exciting game of the season for the Rangers so far.
The fact that it's the Islanders definitely amplifies my anger in this subject- but it's an absolute joke for a team to get a point in the standings when they lose in in the OT period.
Richards is still more than capable of producing at an above-average level, but 6.5 million is for players FAR above average. He is not a top 10% player, or anywhere close. The Rangers have been given a gift with the amnesty clause, so they need to use it on Richards and let that money go toward the extensions for McDonagh, Stepan, Hags, etc. $6.5 million can go a long ways and help us keep our young core together. Luckily the Rangers are financially stable enough to eat some of the salary and still go out and sign a younger RFA or FA. I am not opposed to trading one of Staal/Girardi to bring back a Bobby Ryan type of guy...someone who will muck it up AND put up points. Clowe is NOT the answer...for those of you trying to ride that train, Clowe is gone after this season if he think she is getting north of $4.5M from the Rangers.
I wish there was a clip of it, but when Moore was in our own zone, he did a spin move with the puck, and made the islanders player look foolish. The kid can skate, and is definitely a better defenseman then DZ
Another game, another night Brad Richards proves to be useless. Honestly thought everyone played well except for Richards and Brassard. Brassard made a great play on the goal, but before that was playing with the puck to much which led to some costly turnovers. Even thought Boyle played well.
Can somebody get Moore some "Moore" playing time. He is great in the minutes he plays, and should be seeing 12-15 every night.... Cmon torts
" ...sick pass by Brassard on the winner. Not sure the Rangers had anyone who could make that play earlier this season."
Exactly why Richards has to be bought out.
Also. Does anyone think that John Moore has played very well and deserves more ice time? Definitely better than Eminger....
Del Zotto is terrible. He's another Dubinsky-suposed to have so much upside yet can never fully put it together.
I was really impressed with the Islanders, especially over the last 30 minutes of the game. If they keep playing like this, they're going to blow right past Ottawa and give the Caps everything they can handle in round 1.
Unlikely as it is, it would be awesome to see a Rangers/Isles match-up in the playoffs.
Also, the Rangers played with guts tonight. Although they were outplayed, they showed desperation and didn't seem to be afraid to lose. That's all you can ask, really -- and it's refreshing to see them play with such fire. Both teams were hungry, in my opinion (the Isles are just much quicker and were skating with confidence). Now, barring a bizarre meltdown, it looks like they're going to make it to the post-season. The schedule is pretty weak over the last 7 -- unless the Devils somehow find themselves.
I appreciate the synopsis Kevin since I only caught the 3rd and OT so I can only add comments from that point of the game - long work week on the road and nice to come home to a win. From the time I tuned in the Isles were clearly the hungrier team out-dueling and outplaying us, which is hard to understand. We held our own physically but we got to take it to the opponents, not just "hold our own" - it's really fortunate we got the win but I wonder how this team could not put 101% into it with such a tight playoff run. The positive is that Brassard's was just about the sweetest feed I've seen all season and what a snipe from G. a "goal scorers" goal - maybe they should move him up to Steps line :)
Srums after the whistle? How about these guys sticking up for one another for once?!?! I love these guys, but what a bunch of chumps!!! Could we hit someone once in a while. Freaking joke!!!!!
Also I love how brassard went absolutely nuts after Girardi scored. We need everyone to have energy like this kid.
"Timely scoring"? Kevin, seriously. They were shut out. They were outplayed but managed a win. Great to get the points but lets not get carried away.
@TheKing I think Stepan has proved he can play with the big boys. I think he is better than Brassard. Why disrupt a good thing. Those two have been our whole offense this year. Brassard had one good pass in a bad game by him. No need to rush to those kinda statements. There is potential with this guy, he was a first rounder, he just hasn't lived up to it in Columbus.
A couple of things from last night's game........
First off...good job by Pyatt and Asham addressing the elbow to Emminger. This Ranger team has not really stood up for each other all year. Sure, it negated the PP.....but it had to be done. It was still relatively early in the game......you can't let hits like that go unanswered.
The defense played well for the most part. What I did not like...especially in the 2nd period was the play of our forwards in our own end. The forwards kept collapsing down low....no pressure at all on the Islander players high up in the zone. You can't play that way against them. They are a very good passing team in the offensive zone. Their passes are quick and accurate....you have to pressure them up high.
Also, the Rangers seemed to have abandoned their forechecking game last night. Playoff hockey is coming....we need to have that forechecking game clicking on all cylinders.
A couple of players who stood out tonight....
Powe....he plays hard. Had several shifts where he hit everything in sight. I'm going to love seeing Powe play with Dorsett....another "hit anything that moves" type of player. Talk about an energetic 4th line. :)
My Number 1 star of the game.....John Moore. We all know he can skate and handle the puck....but man....he brought a physicality and ferociousness I had not seen before. He was standing up puck carriers at the blue line...he was taking runs and looking for big hits on the puck carriers as they entered our zone......
We all know he can skate well and handle the puck...but if Moore can bring that kind of physicality night in..and night out.....then Torts is going to have to give him BIG minutes. I was very impressed with his play last night.
@coontzbloontz why does everyone talk about that like its a good thing? Going 16 mins without a shot is embarassing and frustrating to watch. They play not to lose.
@NH_NYR_88 yeah. I didn't realize it until tonight, but A goalie only logs a shutout after getting through the overtime. All these rules are so inconsistent
@SetYouStraight we are not trading staal or girardi, and I do not think Bobby Ryan is the answer to this teams woes. In fact, I think we need a center. We have Stepan, but Brassard is a 3rd line center.... I know it may be impossible but malkin is a ufa the year after next, and if we can cut Richards that is the guy I want to take a run at. I know Step has been great all year, but I think he is a better player if he does not have to be the only guy. Having a 1a and 1b center makes it a lot easier. Imagine, Callahan-Stepan-Nash and by then Kreider-Malkin-Zucarrelo, with our 3rd being Miller-Brassard-Fast/Lindberg..... This is all speculation, but I don't think we need any more wingers, we have a ton of prospects coming up, and I would definitely rather keep our defense intact.... especially Staal, Mcdonagh, Girardi and now Moore
@Josh6 Definitely better than DZ? Come on, now. He had a couple of good games, let's not jump to conclusions
@PenaltySh0t Torts is saying he's not physical enough.
@Beckfan5 and again, he was our best defenseman at times this year.
@Beckfan5 The dude is 22. You might be right, but it's too early to make that kind of definitive statement.
@Hotfreak The Isles did appear hungrier to me but maybe it's just as you said -certainly we got outplayed but I do appreciate though that the effort was there for us
@Betweentheworlds Sometimes you get outplayed. I didn't think we were less hungry, just not as crisp. You have to hand it to the Islanders -- they are really clicking right now. Amazing we got the 2 points.
Btw, the first period was pretty even, then the Rangers dominated the first half of the second period. The last half of regulation belonged to the Isles, though.
@shishya100 Unless you have Hank between the pipes. ;)
@CareyBrandsdorfer Me too, loved the excitement... welcome to the rivalry Brassard.
@CareyBrandsdorfer I've had a boycrush on him since day 1 and that look of pure excitement when Girardi sealed the game just made it even better.
@shishya100 What's more timely than a goal in overtime?
@KevinDeLury -_-'. Does everyone have to be? McD isn't really either except he blocks shots I guess. Also, tonight Moore had 4 hits and a blocked shot, idk Torts is fucking nuts and I want Moore over Eminger lol.
@ivanricov ....and again, he's also been the worst
@Betweentheworlds Yeah, perhaps I'm wearing rose-colored glasses. It just felt like a war, to me.
@Hotfreak Add to the :positives "The King"!
Thanks for the update Hotfreak
@KevinDeLury AND have the pipes that he had tonight protecting his ass!
@KevinDeLury @shishya100 I got to kind of agree with Shish. Rangers may have had a timely goal but they got completely outplayed today. Biggest thing holding them back is their passing out of the D-Zone and in the neutral zone. Their D need to make stronger passes NOT up the middle (DZ, McD, G give aways) and their wings have to make strong passes off the wall or AT LEAST get the puck out.
And, also, could someone PLEASE gain the damn red line and make a solid dump in!!!!! There were at least 4 icings tonight because the player refused to take that extra stride to get to the red, and even more dump ins that were broken up because the player couldn't avoid hitting the ONE section of ice where the Islander D was located. Come on! Dumping the puck in a corner is hockey 101. No one should be able to "steal" your dump ins. That's just laziness or lack of focus.
@PenaltySh0t I said the same thing about Gaborik and look what happened to him.
@Hotfreak they just kept coming with hits, the islanders. wasnt sure what team i was watching.
