Jim Cerny at nyrangers.com reports that neither Ryane Clowe (undisclosed) nor Brian Boyle (right leg) practiced with the team today.
Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record says that the Rangers lack of information on Clowe makes it more and more likely he's dealing with a concussion.
...man, Clowe's physical game is perfect for playoffs. A prolonged absence due to a concussion would be a huge blow to the Rangers playoff success.
...also wonder where Boyle fits in right now. I don't think it's a given that he'll get right back into the line-up once healthy.
Gross adds that Derek Dorsett underwent a CT scan on his broken clavicle but was not cleared for contact.
Here's Dorsett on his status (via Daily News)...
"You can't predict, but if everything keeps going the way it has, I hope to be ready sometime during this series."
...amazing to think that with Clowe's injury a guy who's never played a single game in a Rangers uniform could possibly be so integral to the Rangers success.
Meanwhile, Marc Staal, who practiced in full with the team today, told Gross that there's no new progress in adjusting to blurred vision but that doesn't rule him out playing in playoffs at some point.
...i'm sorry folks I don't see how Staal can play in this series with his vision still blurred. Especially when he's going to be on the ice with a guy like Ovechkin who's always looking to catch a guy with his head down or not on a swivel.
Here were the lines at practice (va Bergen Record)...
Steve Zipay at Newsday adds that Michael Haley was practicing with the fourth line.
...that third line, I'm sort of up in the air about. At first glance, I wasn't that excited about it, but the more I think about it, it could work. Nice mix of speed and creativity with Brassard & Kreider and then Pyatt to do the heavy lifting and boardwork.
i hate injury speculation. we will never know for sure because the only people who know are in the locker room. lets play with what we got cus we got no choice and they will come back in good time and theres nothing we can do about it. LETS GO RANGERS AND FUCK OVI AND CRAPS
i personally think clowe will be back for game 1 or 2 at the latest. i know concussions are risky, but nash made it back from his in a week and mcdonagh had some head pains after the MTL board hit. clowe's a tough guy, and it seems to me at least that he wants to play and will do so, even with a little bothersome pain.
The rangers were tight lipped on Nash as well. I would expect clowe back in this series and Dorset as well. Staal not so sure and to be honest I like our 6. Been playing well this year.
Got to think Staal's people are thinking about a long storied NHL career not being cut short by bringing him in too quickly this series. If he ain't ready he ain't ready. Too bad because the battles with Ovi and Marc are epic. We'll have to find other ways of shutting Ovi down between our depth players - though some might call me crazy, and this will never happen but I think Moore could be the man for the job. He's looked better each game.
Clowe looked to me like he was knocked into next Tuesday. Don't think there was a single person who watched that game who didn't believe he got concussed. As one who's had Post concussion syndrome (twice) I'm praying it's not too bad but it looked freakin awful from where I was sitting. Don't know his concussion history but from my own experiences (I've had 6 that I know about) if this is his first or 2nd he's likely to be back this series, if he's had any more than 3 he's probably through for the season and wish him a speedy recovery. Injuries are a part of this sport and Slats got us some depth so we're still good to go deep into this 2nd season. LGR
All I know is Torts cannot play Girardi & McD 30+ mins a game for the entire playoffs and expect them to hold up. He's got to be able to trust players like Stralman and Moore with more ice time...
Oh, and that mask - whatever makes you feel comfortable, Hank!
Lets ust hope that Staal is ready to play & he is saying otherwise so the caps think he is not. I think this team has what it takes to go all the way, however only if we get Staal back. The only team in the East that i can say is clearly better than us is a healthy Pitts burgh, & even thats only if Fleury plays like he did in 08 & 09. Not like the Fleury of the last few years. Even though I think we r as good as anyone I don't think we can win w-out Staal.
Worried about the injury situation - especially Clowe. I guess the good news is that the trades gave us the depth to handle this better. Dorsett could be a big help if he gets cleared but as an energy player I think he will need time to get into game shape - time he won't have in the playoffs. If Boyle comes back I think he plays 4th line and pk (what am I saying - he will replace Kreider on the 3ed and hurt us...). Crazy that the Rangers will depend on Kreider to perform in the playoffs again and that he is as much of a wild card as he was last year.
I'd like to see Clowe in there, like everyone else. However, it's not like he's been setting the world on fire, either. I'm comfortable with Newbury picking up the slack.
I wouldn't want Staal to play either if he isn't 100% playoffs or not. I don't want to risk further/permanent injury.
Man, that clowe trade just looks horrendous if he doesnt play in the playoffs this year. 3 high end draft picks for a guy to play 12 games in the Rangers uniform. Also, don't think he is coming back next year, with all the salary cap issues the Rangers have in the next 2 years. That being said if he gets healthy he could be a huge addition to our third line!
@GeorgeGrigorian true but concussions vary as much as leaves on a tree. sadly. i hope he heals up well. and fast. his absence worries me.
I've had a total of eight concussions, so I know where you're coming from. Fortunately, tho...the worst concussion...only left me screwed up for about ten days..after that was right as rain.
Sadly, I've seen this type of thing before. The elbow that hit Clowe was not a bad one....and it didn't affect him right away. It was about a second or two later when he tried to skate that the affect came...and that is not good.
From seeing this happen to several people over the years, I would bet the house that Clowe has had multiple concussions in the past. And from guys who suffer badly from post concussion syndrome...when they return...sometimes the slightest hit...sometimes not even to the head will trigger the syndrome.
I do not think we will be seeing Clowe again this season. And if he does return, I don't think he'll make it through his first game back. This is a terrible loss for us.
Get Haley in the line-up asap.
@DPSnotty Hoping he gives Moore his well deserved extra ice time. NC on the mask :)
@ThrSage "Cybil" Fleury is the wildcard alright. Will "Five Hole" Fleury or "Stone Wall" Fleury show up???
@greggray24 more of a wild card.... which I didnt think was possible
@Scott_from_Jersey Staal said he was looking to make an appearance midway through this series... that could be a difference maker if he is healthy
@Josh6 2 of the draft picks werent even our own. and plus i believe one of them was san jose's to begin with. if u ask me, it was a steal. clowes a proven character. and were not in a rebuilding stage
@Josh6 im more worried about staal then clowe
@McPhee37 That doesn't sound good. I didn't like the feeling I got at the time of the hit, like that he was really fucked up, though at the time I was thinking 10-14 days due to concussion. I have had PCS twice now. The first was when I was like 29 or so I got nailed in practice sparring in the morning and didn't realize I had a concussion and then got hit again in an actual fight that afternoon (amateur kick boxing). It was at least a month of it - depression. headaches, light sensitivity and all, then my very next concussion - sometime in my mid 40s, at least 15 yrs. later I slammed my head in a fall and got a slight concussion but still went into mild PCS for about 2-3weeks and it wasn't pretty. Hope he gets better soon but if you are right McPhee no way he comes back, at least not in the next 2 series.
@cb1 Ok Debbie ;) - Yes a couple pieces still missing but I still like what I see. When there's a "King" there's a chance! LGR
@cb1 our current lineup has looked pretty good recently. I do hate losing Clowe, but that just means Kreider and Pyatt have to step up. With the way Zuccs and Richards have been playing they should have been top 6 forwards before Clowe got injured. I still think he will be back, if not by game 1... definitely by the first game at the garden.
@NYR44 @Josh6 Not so worried about Staal as I doubt we will see him this round. They need to put him on the ice with a blindfold and see if he can play by sonar or something. Then blurry vision will seem like a blessing... Seriously though, how can we expect him to play well if he is having vision problems. Hard enough to defend Ovi when healthy. If he comes back and plays well it will be a miracle.
Sorry you've had a tough go of it with the concussions. Hopefully, you are ok now.
My worst concussion...lost my helmet on a hit behind the net, continued up ice...teammate from the bench yelled out the jersey number of the guy who drilled me....went after him and the puck by my bench....next thing I know...it was 5 hours later and I was doing some arm balance test for a specialist in the hospital....lol. It was freaky. I went from the ice to an ER in an instant...very unsettling.
Apparently, from what I was told, I went to check the guy and a teammate was coming from the other side to hit him also...i go to him a split second earlier..and my teammate's head(with helmet)...rammed into the side of my head.......I stood still for a second...hopped the bench....sat down...started mumbling...and drooling.....of course I remember none of this.
I hear ya with headaches. Had a migraine 24/7 for about 7 days....never really got out of bed the whole time. Scariest part for me...was the first few days...upon waking...the bed and room would spin. Doc said it was vertigo from the injury...thank goodness that stopped....
Played with a guy who had several concussions...his last and final one came on a light crosscheck...to his shoulder. It was a love tap....he skated a few feet...then just fell to all fours. He retired shortly thereafter.....
Just read an article about Clowe being hit face first into the boards last year...suffered facial fractures....he must have a had a concussion along with it......hmmm....
