In John Tortorella's never-ending quest to jump start the Rangers anemic power play, Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports these power play units from practice yesterday...
Unit 1: Nash, Stepan, Callahan, Richards and Girardi
Unit 2: Brassard, Zuccarello, Pyatt, Moore and Del Zotto
...i say this all the time. As much as I love Girardi, he has no business being on the power play. How much better would that first unit look with Moore at the point with Richards?
...also, Pyatt? Really Torts? Really? Now's not exactly the time to give everyone a chance on the power play. Would much rather see Hagelin out there. Assuming Pyatt would be off the power play once Clowe is healthy.
Conversely, the Capitals power play, was the best in the NHL this season with a 26.8% (44-for-164) success rate. Alex Ovechkin had 16 power play goals, while a finally healthy Mike Green had 4g and 10a.
...to put those numbers in perspective the Rangers had a pp success rate of just 15.7% (24-for-153). Yes, the entire Rangers team scored just FOUR more power play goals than Ovechkin and Green combined. Ugly
...the oft injured Green, was a big key in the Capitals late season resurgence and is someone the Rangers will need to focus a lot of attention on if they want to win this series.
Girardi on the PP is horrible. He misses every damn shot. Put McD on, he doesn't have the hardest shot but he hits the net at least!
There is a very good explanation for why Hagelin and Stralman are not on the PP and Pyatt and Girardi are... It's because John Torterella is not a very good hockey coach.
Am I the only person that thinks we should give Stralman some PP time? He has a decent and accurate shot. Get some traffic in front and let her rip! Worth a try, isn't it?
why are Brassard and Zuccs not on the first unit? Move Richards and Girardi to the second unit and play 5 forwards
With four forwards on the PP I can see why Girardi is on the top unit. But what I don't understand is why McDonagh, who's a better offensive player than Girardi, isn't the D-man on the Top PP unit.
Have no fear, B.Merose picked the Capitals to win the series which means that the Rangers are guaranteed to win. Melrose is the worst when it come to picking a winner.
Assuming Pyatt is space holder for Clowe. Brassard Zucc Clowe Moore and Del Z sounds pretty good to me honestly. I don't mind that first line. I know G's not exactly Mike Green but he gets pucks to the net, unlike Del Z, who looks like he's trying to hurt opposing players instead of hitting the net.
step on the point works idk why he changed it at the ass end of the season. Im not sure why hags doesnt get pp time. STAY OUT OF THE BOX (which we are pretty good at) and we should be fine.
I actually like the powerplay lines -- at least to start. Moore is young and inexperienced and we're not sure how he's going to respond in the playoffs. Its not like Moore has a bomb; Girardi isn't the skater Moore is but probably has a better shot from the point. And giving up a shorty could be a dagger in a playoff game, so I'm fine with it.
Pyatt will be the big body in front of the net for screens and deflections. Might as well give it a shot.
@JohnPiccini exactly! he has a great shot and gets in good shooting positions.
@TheWrage Hagelin's a bigger body in front than Pyatt. also, Kreider anyone? On PP he doesn't have to worry so much about defensive responsibilities or is he just shot from Torts overall handling of him.
@TheWrage Pyatt? Go to the net? LOL!!!!!!!
