The New York Rangers (19-16-4) lost the Toronto Maple Leafs (22-13-4) by the score of 4-3, tonight. For a box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...ugh! That's a tough one to swallow folks. For the Rangers to be able to comeback from two down to tie it in the third only to see Toronto grab the lead back just 39 seconds later definitely stings. Loved the resiliency, but man the defense was brutal in this one. What's the time table on Staal again?
...i know Nash was trying to give his team a couple of more seconds to catch their breath on the final face-off but he cannot under any circumstance change the stick that scored him two goals on the night. I'm convinced that's why his final shot went wide.
...Stepan = Sniper? Didn't see that coming.
...Moore is a +1 with a sweet pass on Nash's second goal. And his reward...9:00 of ice time.
...Del Zotto is pointless with a -2 while taking himself out of position chasing pucks on two Leaf goals including the game winner. And his reward...25:25 of ice time. Makes sense.
...got to love Asham staring at Eminger laying on the ice after getting boarded by Colborne then turning around and skating away. Why is this guy on the team again?
...impressed with Clowe's game around the net. Fierce getting after rebounds. Unfortunately, he could bury any of them tonight.
...not sure if Girardi's bad game was due to Del Zotto being out of position all night or Del Zotto being out of position all night.
...i usually don't like to come down on Callahan but that's an irresponsible holding penalty on Phanuef that lead to Toronto's third goal.
...Zuccarello's nickname should be "Everything But A Goal."
...with just nine contests remaining you hate to come away from that game with zero points. But I still liked the energy and passion, so if they're able to clean-up the defensive miscues the Rangers should be in great shape these last few weeks of the season.
...Rangers can get some revenge on the Leafs as the home and home concludes at MSG on Wednesday night.
Who is more useless Asham or Pyatt? Kinda anxious to get this Dorsett guy back and see what he can do.
Its frustrating to watch opponents park in front of Lundqvist and then get multiple chances to just hammer away at loose pucks without one Ranger laying a finger on them. Also, Hagelin has reallly cooled off. I hope he gets hot right meow!
Shit loss, another game were the Rangers were the better team and lost, seems to happen a lot. The d was awful. I never like to come down on dz but he has one of the worst games Ive seen him play in a while. Zucc looks amazing. Hanks 2 goals or less streak ends....I really thought marty should have started tonight after hank faced 49 shots the other night....I didnt like that decision. The refs were bad and the hockey gods werent on our side....two posts, broken stick, bad bounces. I dont like toronto's style of play its like "lets skate around aimlessly and take everyone down on borderline penalties" . Cant believe they came back and then blew the lead. awful
Agree with everything you said except a couple of things. First, I think Girardi was bad because he had an off night. Yes, Del Zotto didn't help but I think we need to stop letting Girardi off the hook. I'm not asking for him to be traded because of it but let's call a spade a spade - he sucked last night. I'd say he'll bounce back but he's just have a bad season.
As for Callahan's penalty, my brother (who plays and referees) explained it to me and it actually wasn't a dumb penalty. What happened was he almost went knee-on-knee with Phaneuf. Obviously that would've been worse for both of them so he tried to turn his leg to stop it. In doing so I don't know if he had to brace himself or wanted to make sure he and Phaneuf didn't hit so he grabbed him to stop the collision. Obviously still a penalty but if he hadn't done that and gone knee-on-knee...well it would've been a lot worse (both in penalty time and possible injuries).
Oh and I'm not surprised Stepan is a sniper...this year he can kind of do everything ;-)
Very minor observation, but Brassard and Clowe do an AMAZING job at getting that puck to the point and getting into position after.
Numerous times, especially on the PP, Brassard wins a board battle and makes a play with the puck off the boards to get it to Richard or DZ on the point...that is where the offense is created on the Power Play.
@TheNYRBlog Nash and stepan played very well and delivered for us. Our defense got caught with there pants down all throughout the game
Can anyone say......4 games.......6 nights? They were tired. Hank especially looked like he could used a night off.
@TheNYRBlog I liked that they were able to come back from a 2 goal deficit in the 3rd. Really miss Staal though.
Your comment on Del Zotto is spot on! His ass should be on the bench, not rewarded with more ice time.
Kevin I disagree with you for once. They are a team. Yeah the Defense was bad tonight...but ALL of it was. Not just one player. For some reason something was off tonight. Henrik is human, and so is the rest of the team. They make mistakes. Does it suck they are making them this late... yes... is there anything you can do about it except whine or cry and take it up the tailpipe no..
Well, that was pretty freakin brutal! Should have been an easy 2 points. Entertaining game. Toronto goalie looked uncharacteristically shaky, rebounds abound - good goal by Step but you know he wanted that one back. We dominate play, Nashty was nasty but Henry looked like a mere mortal and we were very sloppy at times, especially in our own end. How many times have we seen our boys surrender a goal right after they score one. Still some good signs. Every team has a sloppy game here and there. Regroup, tighten up. We got work to do! MDZ needs a hug.
Sauer would not let JVR joyfully hang out by the net. Kipryos (I know I misspelled) says, Staal could be back on the ice within 7-10 days.
it will be interesting to see how DZ responds to this. he is 22. how he responds to it is everything though. it's a measure of what kind of pro he will be.
i think a lot of people, myself included really went after him on the blog tonight because it was such a great game for a couple of reasons. we clawed our way back from a 3-1 deficit, in Toronto. rick nash put on a show and played a focused, great overall game. stephan turned it up too and looked good out there. stralman had some heroics and worked through some pain to have a pretty good game. clowe looked good. boyle was stayed up on his skates and involved. for these reasons and more, for me anyway, it was a tough game to lose because i wanted them to win it and believed that they were never down and out.
one game with 10 to go. and toronto coming in to our house next. fix the D pairs torts. and if it doesnt work next time, dont wait until there is under 3 minutes left in the game to adjust. it would also be good if someone in a leadership capacity got in del zotto's ear as well, encourage him and make sure he's not spiraling downwards in his head. that's kinda key imho.
Del Z wanted to be a goalscoring stud in front of his friends/family, forsaking the defensive parts of his game that has elevated him the past couple of weeks. Hopefully he moves on from it.
That being said, as usual Del Zotto is the scapegoat in these situations. In the case of the 1st and 4th Toronto goals (especially the 1st), I think sloppy line changes were more to blame than Del Z. He could have had better coverage, but it was a bad situation to begin with.
Biron should have started tonight. Hank deserved a breather after an impressive 10-game streak, and I think he should get at least 1-2 more games off before we (hopefully) get to the playoffs.
Don't understand the griping about the Colborne hit... we got a powerplay from it, move on. You don't have to start shit about every penalty that happens in the game, that just leads to more bad penalties. What I did like is how the team stuck up for Nash at the beginning of the game when he was getting some crosschecks from Komarov(?). DONT MESS WITH THE PRIZE!
The defensive coverage is really what killed us tonight.
Yeah got to agree - when he's good he can even be great at times, but when he's bad DelZotto costs us the game. Seriously missing Staal. You Nailed it Kevin.
@TheNYRBlog I agree with you on Moore not being rewarded and DZ being rewarded for bad play, torts has his "guys"
When I saw Stepan skating up the ice on that 2 on 1, I had that gut feeling that he was going to snipe one past Reimer.
Tell you what, I wasn't that impressed by Reimer's rebound control tonight. Definitely should have driven the net better. Nor was I impressed by the defense. Absolutely atrocious. Can't believe that Torts didn't have a chat with DZ on the bench about staying at home. Kevin is right, he made Girardi of all people look terrible. I can't complain too much about DZ cause he's been very good lately. But, he's gotta find a way to better, even when he's having an off night. Hopefully that will come with age.
Nevermind hank and the defense, they'll be fine. Averaging 3.6 goals per game over last 5, they keep that up (or close to it) they can beat anyone in 7 game series.
Defense today was absolutely atrocious and it was clear DZ was out of position time and time again, however I still felt that Lundqvist was not at his best. I know that he cant be stellar every game. He was having an extremely hard time tracking the puck, which is usually a non issue for him. That being said I am in no way blaming him for the loss.
toughest loss of the season... Hope that dosen't come back to bite us in the end.. Deff a winable game
that was as bad a game as MDZ has had since his rookie year. Kevin, you are 100% correct that Moore should have been given his some of his ice time when it became clear that MDZ's brain didn't make it through customs.
@YimYames18 I'm so freaking stoked for Dorsett. He's a really tough Sean Avery with anger problems.
@Thebodisatfa1 getting Staal back and Mcilrath up will help that, Girardi and McD do a good job but need more teeth around the net, MDZ has been better with net battles lately but had an off game.
@Thebodisatfa1 that will change next year
@IcyCup I think Del Z, Girardi is a good pairing. When Del Zotto wants to get involved in the offense, he's got one of the best stay at home d-men around to back him up. Tonight they both got screwed over on some bad line changes, plus bad decision-making from Del Zotto.
@coontzbloontz Del Zotto has been a D-Zone liability the entire season..he makes the spectacular play, yet consistently fails on the routine play..last night is just another example of his folly in his own zone.
@coontzbloontz I was surprised Biron didn't get the nod tonight, but I guess after such a great game Torts wanted to keep it going - now after a loss it's tough to put him in there Wed.
@chetti He could probably use a game off right about now.
@cb1 Del Zotto looked like he thought he was back in the Eastern Conference FInals.
@cb1 I know it may scare some of you, but Moore has some through the roof potential... for this year... not in the future. I really have only seen him make one maybe two bad plays, the kid deserves more ice time even if he is the 5th dman. The kid can skate, with him and Mcdonagh, not to mention Girardi and Staal our D could be set for years to come
@Josh6 From your mouth to God's ears
@Josh6 Thanks! Where did you see that?
@coontzbloontz agreed on bad decision making by MDZ. on your other points, i have no idea what game you were watching.
@KevinDeLury @chetti I totally agree. I am completely shocked that Hank has played so much this year. I really hope that Biron gets the start on Wednesday. With it being our 6th game in 9 nights, Hank needs a break. Any time I seem to watch the Blackhawks play, it seems like Emery is playing even though Crawford is their #1.
@KevinDeLury I was hoping Biron was starting today. Lundqvist was just off today, and this is aside from his behind the net scare. He looked like an average goalie today, not the goalie we know and love.
