The last time Rangers/Islanders had any real juice was in the early 2000s when Theo Fleury and the Czechmates were running things (aka "The Dark Years"). And there was one imagine that defined the rivalry at that time...
...oh Fleury. If you weren't hungover all the time maybe you could have helped the team actually make the playoffs back then. I kid Theo. Actually his numbers during his three seasons on Broadway were pretty good. Too bad the "Chicken Dance" and punching the San Jose mascot will define his time with the Rangers.
Here's video of the events leading up to Fleury's antics...
...McCarthy flexing and pointing at his bicep is still one of the great all time taunts I've seen in sports. Unreal.
...and btw, Steve McKenna? Really, Rangers? Really? Man they sucked back then.
i remember when they did the "blueshirts of our backs" thing and mccarthy took of his and had no undershirt or anything. old school, just the shoulder pads. dude looked huge. also, felt bad for the kid getting that sweaty ass nazty jersey and having to carry it home.
Just wondering, has anyone heard anything about staal? Some random people are saying he may play tomorrow, and that it will give the Rangers a huge boost. Any thing being said Kevin, that would back this up at all?
classic, glad the rivalry is finally starting to mean something again. That rivalry is what galvanized me as a die-hard Ranger fan back in the late 70's. God I loved those match-ups. And Islanders-Rangers playoff games back then, forget it, nothing else like it. Its been a long time since both have been in the playoff hunt. Good to see.
@TheNYRBlog Damn. I forgot all about Theo's chicken-dance. Thx for that. It's sad seeing Theo now, knowing what was really going on with him
@TheNYRBlog those teams were embarrassing. Loved Theo! Hated Sandy. We used to call him Sandy The Sniper.
@Josh6 Not happening. He said during practice that nothing new to report on his status.
@mlsranger Seriously... michelleti is blind as a bat and a complete moron. I still remember last playoffs, when he took 20 minutes to realize they were reviewing a goal because Neil kicked it in, not because he hit the goalie. JD always picked that shit up live... he didn't even need the replays.
@KevinDeLury okay just wondering. Because last time he came back from an injury I did not know until I was heading in to the stadium at the winter classic. The defense needs to step up and play a lot better then, Girardi has to be back to his normal self, and shut down Tavares
