So, the last two days I've posted some pretty good Rangers/Islanders videos, but with puck drop just hours away, I decided to step up my game and post the creme de la creme Rangers/Islanders rivalry videos.
And while the Theo Fleury may have defined the rivalry in the early 2000s with his "Chicken Dance," nothing captures the hatred between the two franchises more than what happened at the end of Game 1 of the Patrick Division Semi-Finals back in 1990 when Isles coach Al Arbour put out his goon squad with just seconds remaining in the Rangers 2-1 victory to get revenge for James Patrick's hit on Pat LaFontaine that knocked him out of the series just minutes before.
Here's the video...
...as a young Rangers fans at that time, I was obviously not fond of the Islanders, but this incident began my utter hatred and disdain of the Fishsticks.
...looking back on it now, you've got to feel for Jeff Bloemberg, who was basically the sacrificial lamb after Neilson took all his top players off the ice once he knew what Arbour was up to.
...and for those of you who wanted to know how rowdy it was at the Garden back then, LaFontaine was delayed getting to the hospital after the game because Rangers fans mobbed his ambulance and tried to tip it over. These days the Garden crowd would probably act as escorts to make sure he got to the hospital as quick as possible.
And, of course, what would a Rangers/Islanders rivalry video montage be without this...
...Cloutier should be honored before every Rangers/Islanders game at MSG just because of that beating of Salo.
...and how about Langdon going at it with Chara?
...man I'd kill to see something like this tonight, but I won't hold my breath because those days are long gone.
Blomberg was an admitted pacifist. Pretty brave going after him. I get intensely angry every time I watch this because I remember it vividly. I also remember Beukeboom dropped Vukota a season or 2 after this, so that makes me feel a little better. I thought Knuckles was still on the Rangers at that time and I'm not sure why he wasn't out there. Lets hope it's 5-0 Rangers with 2 mins left and the Islander try to goon it up. Would love to see Clowe draw someone's blood!
i've been watching since 1979, and i've always said the nassau coliseum is a cesspool and the islanders are the scum inside
I remember that game quite well...was 23 at the time.
Neilson screwed that up big time. Everyone knew what was coming. We had knocked out LaFontaine...and the Islanders were looking for payback and a message to be sent.
Neilson, considered a "goon coach" going back to his Canuck days, should have had all fighters on the ice...or at least players who could defend themselves.....but for whatever reason...poor Bloemberg was thrown to the wolves.
It's amazing tho....young people see these videos...the classic on-ice brawls...or bench clearers...and they get pumped up by it. But then you have people who scream..."I don't want fighting in hockey"..."ban fighting".......the majority of those in the ant-fighting camp have never played a game of hockey in their lives...and will never understand the importance of it. Sam Rosen...one of those individuals...has driven me crazy for years with his views.
In my opinion, the league should reverse the rules on instigation in the final minutes of a regulation. Rough stuff at the end of regulation was common place back in the day. You wanted payback for a cheap shot in a game that was decided...that was the time. Or let's say you just got blown out in the first game of a home and home series..and you wanted to send a message..that was the time. Everyone knew it was coming...players would drop the gloves...sometimes just two guys going at it....sometimes an on-ice brawl...but then it would end...and it was on to the next game. All the nastiness in a veryrough game would come to a head....the players would get it out of their system...a release valve of sorts...and then it was on to the next game.
But now, that release valve isnt there...(it can happen...but there's a 10,000 grand fine and a one game suspension for the aggressor).....
And what do you get? Players who are looking to address a cheap shot and looking for payback...will just do it during a game...via the elbow...boarding...etc...with the intent to injure.
Ugh..sorry for the rant gang.
I would rather see a win, but this will never happen again in the NHL because guys wudnt just be thrown out they would be suspended and lose about 100000 dollars in pay
I was at that game when poor Bloemberg got his ass handed to him by the goon Mick Vukota. This kind of rivalry will unfortunately never be seen again.
Funny story with Mick Vukota. In the early 90s or something, I was at the Marriot trying to get some Rangers autographs before the game against the Fishsticks. Mick Vukota walks down the hallway and one kid yells, "Hey Mick! You scored a hat trick on my Sega for me last night! Can I get an autograph." He stopped, smiled and said, "Shit. That will be the most points I'll get in my life. Thanks kid."
That beating Bloemberg took was really low rent. I was at game 2 when Troy Mallette knocked out Jeff Norton with a thunderous check right before game went to overtime.
@TheNYRBlog shit like that gets my blood boiling in .0001 seconds....
