With the ridiculously huge Rangers/Islanders game on Long Island Saturday night, I'm going to post a piece of Islanders hate the next few days leading up to puck drop...
...for you youngsters on the blog, Rangers/Islanders hasn't exactly lit the world on fire this last decade, so I don't blame you for thinking that the Flyers or Devils are the Blueshirts' biggest rival. But Saturday night, you'll get a taste of what it was like back in the 80s & 90s. For my money, the once great rivalry is just as good if not better than Bruins/Canadiens or Flames/Oilers.
And nothing exemplifies the hatred between these two franchise at its peak than this video from 1985...
...i totally remember watching this game with my dad and a bunch of family at my uncle's house. Everyone was going nuts. Doesn't get better than that.
...and what's up with the much more accomplished fighter Sutter going after Sandstrom? Gutless.
Cloutier comes in at about 65 mph and beats down Salo, then challenges Islander bench.
I was in high school (on Long Island) for three of the four Islander cups. The Islander fans made my life miserable! I am excited for Saturday night. I just wonder which Rangers team will come to play that night?!
Best ones to watch are when goalies go at it, doubtful lundqvist would do anything unless directly attacked
Damn it I was going to take a nap now this post has me all riled up. That's right, having lived thru the 80s, always a special hatred for the 'sticks
Brett Lustig what do you know? Nothing that's what. Isles all the way..... WE WANT PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
I was at the game when the famous (Potvin Sucks) broke Ulf Nielsons leg...Potvin sucked then and he still sucks now, as the Garden crowd will always remind him.....LETS GO RANGERS
Does anyone have video of the one with Theo Fleury? Theo when he was an alcoholic maniac... what a classic
Classic! Beezer & James Patrick...my two favorite Rangers from those years. Can hardly wait until Saturday...should be fun!
I hate the Islanders but Im really glad the rivalry is back. It will be good for hockey in NY. Time for all the front runner Islander fans that have not watched a game sice Alexi Yashin took the ice to come out. Prolly will have to remind them what iceing is......
@TheNYRBlog I'm so upset .... I want to go but tickets are so expensive for the coliseum
Not one I ever got to watch myself, but this is my personal favourite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kJno60rwE4
But honestly if they don't come out fired up on Saturday, and come out flat on the road in the biggest game of the year, I give up on them this year. This has to be a statement game, almost like "the rangers are here and everyone should be scared"
And for some more recent history:
God damn this gets my blood boiling! I wanna suit up and beat the crap out of a fishstick now. Sorry, Devils and Flyers can never build up this much hatred in my book. For all his Cups, Al Arbour is a gutless pussy! I still think if I saw Mick Vukota on the street today I would just haul off and beat him to a pulp!
Thanks Kevin now I'm angry! I want Clowe to drop someone so hard Saturday that the Islander teams of the past feel it!
Great piece, biggest rangers islanders game I can remember in my life time, and I am really excited. I want to see clowe level someone, or just stick to Tavares all game. Very excited, and lets go bruins tonight. Potvin sucks
@SleepingWithNash yeah, billy Smith was nasty, and Healy would take a swipe or 2, I fogot which Ranger goalie wnet after him (Eddie Mio?)
@chrisD oh man, Cloutier was a beauty!
Old time hockey baby. My picture of Darren Langdon and myself under the garden out side the Rangers locker room is displayed nicely in my living room. :)
Young kids today don't understand. Hockey has been sanitized. Although still an incredibly tough sport....nothing like it used to be. If you've never been involved in an 5 on 5 brawl...or bench clearing brawl....ya missed out. Wild and crazy times.
@GiveGartneraCup All 5'6" of him - would like to see him go after Charra
@GiveGartneraCup When he does the chicken? That was hysterical.
@craig_atherton Didn't see that you had already posted this one - it's my favorite vs the fish sticks
@craig_atherton This is my fave, too. Nothin' beats a goalie fight, except when your goalie taunts the entire enemy bench, as well.
@McPhee37 Yeah I grew up watching the r Rangers at the garden in the 70s and the bench fights gave the game a Romanesque feed em to the lions vibe - but ultimately the skill level is much higher now and those days are behind us. It couldn't go on that way because it marginalized the game - you just could not show that on national TV these days but I think the Rangers need that kind of emotional investment now to advance in the playoffs.
@KevinDeLury McCarthy! He was one of my all time favorite Rangers enforcers. Him, Orr and Prust!
@KevinDeLury YES!!!! I can only find the chicken dance... not all the shit that lead up to it!
All sports have changed over the years. Baseball...got tough on pitches who pitch inside...football....types of hits...QB's and WR's protected at all costs....basketball...it goes on and on.
There were tremendous skill players in hockey back in the 70's and 80's too....but the clutching and grabbing....the holding and hooking which was allowed back then....was amazing. You really had to work hard to create space, and fend off the opponent.
While you're right...you will never see those bench clearing brawls again....and you shouldn't....I'm in agreement with ya there...however..the on-ice brawls....those three fights at one time...or more...still need to occur.
Hard to explain....its like a release valve
@KevinDeLury Amazing! Wish there was a compilation of everything that went down that game. I think it was a blow out at that point. But there was a bunch of fights in that game, if I recall correctly.
