During last night's 4-2 loss in Philadelphia, John Moore, once again, displayed a smooth skating game that included a sweet pass through the neutral zone to spring Mats Zuccarello for the Rangers first goal. He even showed a little of that snarl he's been working on with Schoenfeld coming to the defense of Ryan Callahan.
On the other end of the spectrum, Michael Del Zotto proved once again that he may never develop into the power play quarterback, we all hope he can be. Numerous turnovers, not being able to keep the puck in the zone and a big ole o'fer with the extra man when the Rangers could least afford it.
I don't see how John Tortorella doesn't at least try Moore at the point. It can't get worse. Sure, Moore has exactly zero power play points in his brief career, but I doubt he's been given much of a chance. He's shown great vision on the ice as well as the ability to get the puck through the neutral without turning it over. Moore is currently averaging 11 seconds of power play time with the Rangers.
Meanwhile, Del Zotto, despite almost three minutes of extra man time per game, has exactly ZERO goals and just six assists on the power play this season. While I still believe Del Zotto has the physical tools to be the Rangers power play quarterback for the next decade, I'm starting to question whether or not he has the hockey intelligence.
Tomorrow night, the Rangers face the worst penalty kill unit in the NHL in the Florida Panthers. What a great opportunity for Tortorella to put Moore on the power play point, hopefully earn some confidence and get the Rangers into the playoffs.
@TheNYRBlog Moore is one hell of a skater.
Del Zotto is garbage. Brilliant drop pass to no one at the blueline last night that lead to the Couturier shorthanded breakaway.
I guess Torts is reading your mind. Did you see this quote from Gross? https://twitter.com/AGrossRecord/status/324575454059171841
@TheNYRBlog Oh now you're coming around...
I don't know what the hell is up with DZ, but you have a point that DZ isn't very hockey smart. He's got a blistering shot and knows how to make crisp passes but he just hasn't been able to do that lately. Confidence shot? what is it?!
Do you know why Moore won't get his playing time on the Powerplay.......because there was one shift in the second period where Moore jumped on the ice off the bench and led with his left foot and not his right. Torts will explain that although he did so many things good stuff like that can't happen but they will work with him!!!!LOL
@TheWrage As long as you like the idea. lol
@TheNYRBlog Del Zotto is only good on the pp bc of his offensive aggressiveness. He needs stay in his position at even strength. Over rated.
@TheNYRBlog he does not, dumb on PP
@TheNYRBlog *cougcoughcoughtoldyousocoughcough* ...and four of DZ's six pp helpers are secondary.
They need Nash out there from the beginning and Richards off the ice. They need to play tighter which would lead too better chances enough with this huggin the boards bs get in front and fight for it
Who comes up for the Rangers, Kevin? Boyle not practicing today.
Silver lining, Staal went through his first full practice since the injury
It wasn't mentioned here, probably just because of the angle you were trying to shed on him, but what about his skating ability. Yes, he has great vision, but the true strength of Moore is his skating ability. He makes forecheckers look foolish at times skating circles around them, and moves extremely well into, and through open space. I think the biggest problem with our PP, besides having Richards and DZ on it, is that our best player is not on the first unit? Last night the sole blame goes on Sullivan or Torts, whoever made that decision. The guy is making 7.8 million dollars a year, and does not get time on the PP 1 unit, but Brad Richards does?? I am sorry but whoever made that decision should be fired.
Having gotten that off my chest Moore should be getting 15 minutes a game at least, and DZ should come down from his 22 to about 16....
I don't get why McDonagh is not back there besides giving him a rest since he's out in every other situation. They should be able to roll 4 defensemen on the PP, which might also give those defensemen a little more confidence in their offensive ability at even strength so they can jump in the play more.
@TheNYRBlog you are being too nice
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I saw that. Awesome!
@mavanco Not completely, but headed there. lol
@PenaltySh0t if his confidence is shot... Imagine what would have happened to the kid if torts didn't baby him, and did what he did to kreider the first year!
@ScottyHockey Where were you when I was doing my research? lol
@Josh6 No idea. I'd think it's Kreider or Miller, but who knows. Boyle might just have today off. Could still play tomorrow.
@Josh6 Haley? Newbury? Anyone not named Kreider or Miller? (I'm wondering the same thing and worried it will be Miller since they would need a center.)
@gravey94 Pretty sure McDonagh was on the power play last night...believe he was the one who attempted the cross ice pass to Girardi as Rosehill came running out of the box that almost gave me a heart attack lol
@gravey94 If Torts puts McD on the power play he'll be averaging 40 minutes of ice time, lol. Actually his sweet goal against Toronto the other night proved he has untapped offensive potential.
@TheNYRBlog sleeping, where I am most mornings.
@KevinDeLury he was in a brace, I think that is asking a lot even if it was just a bad bruise. I would still see him getting a couple of days off
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) yea I think he is most likely the guy, Torts loves the kid. But, and i say this with a huge but since it appears he has a strong distaste for the kid, he also could go Kreider, seeing the playoff experience he has, which , funny thing, is triple what Rick Nash has...
@PenaltySh0t @Melissa (blknblueshirts) if I had my choice I would bring both of them up, play them with Hagelin on the third line, and either scratch or send Richards down. That is what would make the rangers good, Richards has been a plague to this team all year
@Josh6 I don't want it to be either of them but yeah I expect it to be one of them if Boyle can't go tomorrow. That is funny about Kreider though.
