So it looks like the Marian Gaborik trade is paying off for both teams as a night after Derick Brassard and John Moore scored in their Rangers debut, Gaborik had the game winning goal and an assist in his frst game with the Blue Jackets...
...I said yesterday, don't be surprised if Gaborik re-discovers his scoring touch in Columbus. I mean, did you really think a player of his caliber wasn't going to start scoring again? What Rangers fans need to realize before going insane is that just because he might start lighting it up in Columbus doesn't mean he would be doing the same for the Rangers. Torts has a game plan for the Rangers which proved to be very successful last year. And as we saw against the Penguins, they are a better team when playing a tough, physical brand of hockey and unfortunately this season, with Gaborik in the line-up, it wasn't happening.
...plus the trade gave the Rangers much better depth and cap flexibility to sign free agents such as Stepan, Hagelin and McDonagh this summer.
...btw, did you see who was wearing an "A" while assisting on Gaborik's goal?
Here's Gaborik after the game...
I liked him when he was on our team, now as long as it is not against us I could give a rat's ass about what Gabs or anybody does on another team.
Kevin you once again are dead on w-your analysis. Those who want to "go crazy"that we traded Gabby & I have a friend who is need to understand something about him. Now Ilike Gabby but he is not a winning hockey player. he is just not. He is one dimensional who needs lots of ice time & room to score. Once we got Nash he wasn't going to get that. And once again as his his history when things aren't perfect for him he sulked. Thats what he does. He did it in Minny he did it here. He is a classic good player on a bad/ok team. Once the expectations are raised & he is surrounded by better players he wilts. All you need to know about him is this, he waived his no trade clause & a shot at winning a Cup to go to a non hockey city & a team that is a perenial loser. He will play well but Columbus will either miss the playoffs or go out in the 1st round. Once they are better & he is held accountable he will bolt for Europe or another situation where there is no pressure. It's who he is. Think Peter Nedved or John Cullen guys who could score but could never lead a team a top line guy to a Cup.
Signature Dubi on that play. The announcer gives the opponent too much credit for battling, that was all Dubi.
@TheNYRBlog I wonder if the new coach got him going down and blocking shots
I always that Dub deserved at least the A if anything. Cool that Gab scored and all but that doesn't change the fact he wasn't helping our team.
@TheNYRBlog I feel betrayed
I agree but I would say Gabby didn't fit in this year only because we lost much of our core of grinders in the off season. Being that I'm only a fan and I saw that coming it's unfathomable how our GM did not - anyway it's done now and at the end of the day both teams are better.
few things to notice.....gaborik was in and around the net...which he wasnt doing in his slump with us, he did that all last year. Next dubi did amazing wall work and completed an amazing pass. Also there are rumors dubi could be captain sooner than later.
@TheNYRBlog Definitely. Can the new trio be consistent in your opinion?
Every team is a better team playing a "tough, physical brand" of hockey. Which is why Gaborik is worth so much less than his stats.
Btw, Dubinksy made the play on Gaborik's goal. Everyone talks about how much we miss Brandon Prust. I think one guy who we may miss more is Dubinsky. He was just as much of our "ryan clowe" as Prust was. Plus he can score (a little) and set people up.
Dubi will be one of the As on that team....Jack Johnson will be the captain. He is beloved there and has been playing really well this year
Happy for Gabby. Happy for Dubi. Good to see those two together making things happen. Man, I miss Dubi's play!
I felt the Rangers should have traded Gabby all along. I think he got tired of Torts more than anything else. I like the cap flexibility they now have and I like the physical edge to this team. However, all of this needs to translates to wins and an eventual Cup. Otherwise, Hank will be heading for the exits when he becomes an UFA.
@TheNYRBlog that trade was amazing
FYI on the "A" - they had been rotating them around a bunch of players on the team all season but ever since it got on Dubi's jersey, it's stayed there so it may be permanent. Don't be surprised if the letter changes next season either, from what I've read.
The way Dubinsky fought on the boards and made the play on that goal makes me miss watching him. Wish he was still a blueshirt
@TheNYRBlog well said. the cap room savings can not be understated.
@TheNYRBlog it's amazing what happens when u go to the net
I'm happy for Gabby! It's amazing how much of this game depends on your psyche. I'm pretty sure he would still be slumping here though. Nothing but the best Gabby!
I knew this post was coming, but if you watch the game he was the same player he was for the rangers all night. Every opportunity he had he shot right at the goalie, his goal was because of a great pass and his assist meant nothing to the goal on a 4 on 3. If someone should be credited it was Dubinsky lol he looked filthy. Also looking at the standings the rangers could be in an excellent position to move up. With a game or two in hand on practically everyone besides the send and hurricanes, and we play Toronto twice next week which if all goes well we could leap frog into 6th. It all depends on if this team can come out like they did the other night every night.... It would be fun to watch again that's for sure. LGR
@ThrSage A little harsh on Kevin, but I agree with the core of what you are saying. Gaborik's deficiencies are even more glaring come playoff time.
@ZachxDelendik By who?
@ChrisP Noticed that about Gabby's goal as well. He had been willing to do that last year. This year, not so much.
@rangersfan I think we miss both. They may have been able to survive losing one of them but losing both was a lot bigger of an issue than I think they anticipated. That said, I think we may have finally replaced them with Clowe and Dorsett.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I was going to say, I thought I read somewhere that there was considerations of giving Dubi the "C", and one of the things standing in the way was just all the games he's missed this year with injuries. But the players, coaches, and fans all love him and he could be their next captain.
@Josh6 There's still the shoulder, the over cautious play, the loss of velocity of the wrist shot. He'll find some of his scoring touch at CBJ but if he continues to play scared he'll wear out his welcome there too. I would say that the great scorers make the adjustments to their changing body and find a way to add tools to make up for the ones that are lost so this will be a good test for him going forward - one thing for sure is that if he is to ever regain "elite" status he cannot play so cautious.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Agree we miss both, but it seems whenever people talk about how we lost grit, they mention Prust, then Mitchell / Fedentenko. To some extent, that's a credit on Dubinsky because people viewed him more as a "skill guy", which he is, but his grit, especially his play on the boards, was first class. He'd fight too. People hated playing against him. I guess my point is, he was both skill AND grit, which puts him more in the category of Ryan Clowe than Dorsett.
@johnnyb3910 Yep, there was talk about it but I'm not sure if they ever had any intention of doing it this year. (Basically wanted to see who took the lead and their beat writers noticed right away he did so started mentioning the possibility.) The injuries might play into it but if he keeps playing like he did last night, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.
@rangersfan @Melissa (blknblueshirts) When we talk about losing our grit in the offsason I always put Dubi at the top of the list, ahead of even Prust (or at least on par) and I knew he was the guy we'd miss the most. Not everyone saw it that way because of his low numbers last year but he doesn't have to score to be a huge asset. He's a fucking animal!
@rangersfan True and no idea why people do that. I agree Clowe is more Dubinsky and Dorsett is more Prust (especially since CBJ fans are as upset as we were when Prust left). I said last year losing Dubinsky would hurt. Oh well, lesson learned. Hope the new guys keep playing like they did in their first game (and Dorsett fits in whenever he's back lol).
