Whether you liked Marian Gaborik or not, there's no denying the guy knew how to find the back of the net (minus this year with the Rangers) and he's proving it once again in Columbus.
In the four games since the Blue Jackets acquired Gaborik for Derick Brassard, John Moore and Derek Dorsett, he has 2g, 3a, is a +3 and has 12 shots on goal. Here's Gaborik's goal on Tuesday night to put the game away for Columbus...
For video of Gaborik's first Blue Jackets goal, click here.
...so Dubinsky had the primary assist on Gaborik's first goal and now Anisimov has it on the second. Maybe the issue with Gaborik this season was not having those two guys around.
...in all seriousness, the one thing I noticed on both those goals was that Gaborik was going hard to the net, which is something he refused to do for the Rangers this season. Which sort of gets me angry. If he's so willing to do it now, why not when he was still in New York. And even if he wasn't seeing eye to eye with Torts, that's no excuse not to give 100% every night.
...i still think the Rangers are better off now than before the trade deadline, but only time will tell if trading away one of the best snipers in the NHL was best thing for the organization long term.
In five games since being traded with the Rangers, Brassard has 1g, 4a, while Moore has 1g, 1a. Dorsett has yet to play due to a broken collarbone.
Wow...so many blind homer comments on this board. Look at the rangers offense the 1st night after the trade. Season high in goals and beat up one one of the best teams in the league. No time to learn this overrated defensive "system" (aka let lundqvist bail you out 10 times a game). Now theyve been here 2 weeks and the offense is gone again. That goal they scored last night was the only quality scoring chance they had all game. I support the rangers and watch every night I can, but I can still be critical. Every yr its the same thing no matter who they bring in. Paying money for skill players is an absolute waste of time if they are going to play this garbage play not to lose system torts has. If I have to watch another 5 straight mins of them collapsing in their own zone 5 on 5, giving the offense 8 ft of space at the point, im going to throw my remote through the tv.
yeah that's right, the players that went to CBJ are what Gabby needed to score goals, not the ones on the Ranger squad, please...
gaby is a sniper and deserves respect for what he has done for this team. anyone bitching about his contract , look at his goals and compare. he no longer fit the system and it was a good move by both sides
So his lack of production wasn't due to some hidden injury. It was all mental, and I don't buy the "Tort's system is to blame." Gabby gave up on the team and needed "change of scenery" to invigorate and inspire him. Maybe he should have been motivate and inspired by the salary the team paid him. Good move by Slates to ship him out. Gabby may not have been "locker room cancer", but suck lackadaisical play by one of your best forwards can really deflate team's enthusiasm and work ethic.
It's funny that people want to rip Torts system. Guess what? It's the same fucking system as last year! Gaborik did pretty well in that system a year ago. Stepan, Nash, and Callahan are all doing pretty well in that same system this year.
The Rangers parted with Mike Gartner, a more consistent goal scorer than Gabby, so, if he's gone then so be it, next...
I just think him and torts could never see eye to eye. I don't think that torts used him to his strengths and i was tired of torts benching him for half a game because he was pissed at him. that doesn't help his confidence or the team. We definitely needed to trade him to make room to sign stepan and Mcdonough. I also home they resign Clowe
oh stop, Gaborik's last 70 shots on goal as a Ranger he only scored twice, He missed several breakaways, actually looked to pass while on a penalty shot. Stop with this tired system stuff. We couldn't afford his cap hit next season and got some quality players back for him, and they are a stronger team overall without him.
i just think he was a disgruntled player who wanted to leave , and now he is happy since he got his wish . IMO its unprofessional
@TheNYRBlog the answer rhymes with portabella.
@TheNYRBlog was that supposed to be rhetorical? Starts with a T and rhymes with forts.
Simple. The coach neuters them all. He refuses to let the dogs off the leash to let them attack. The defense first BS kills them. They waste too much energy defending without the puck and not enough time with it attacking because of the dump it in and attempt to grind it out style. Used to be a Torts fan, but his system destroys players and their ability to create offense.
I think something was up. He was stilll hurt, but now in Columbus he has something to prove. U ever fail and then wanna prove something no matter what
@TheNYRBlog he found out what "Rock Bottom" feels like and decided to start working again?
We all knew gabby can score. He scores during the season and gets shut down in the playoffs.I know he had triple ot goal against caps but thats it and next season beiing his contract year he was going anyway. This was the best time to move him.
@TheNYRBlog the same coach who is calling out mza for not scoring after what 6 games? Yet gives boyle major minutes every night
@TheNYRBlog maybe he got tired of being jerked around by the coach.
There's also a big difference between "going to the net" on a 2 on 1 and "going to the net" when there's traffic.
Also, going out on a limb here, but it looks like the play starts with SJS turning in over on an entry at the blue line, at which point Gaborik is still on the other side of the neutral zone with Anisimov. In the Rangers system he was too focused on back checking, he would have been skating in the wrong direction when that play started and Anisimov would have been skating in 1 on 1.
Because Torts didnt let him play his game...just like Clowe and Brassard..they have been initiated into the dump and chase cycle BEHIND the net!!! What hap in 1st game after trade?? They crashed the net and scored 6 fucking 6 goals against the penguins no less.. cmon he brings his players down!!!
Why? Four words - needed change of scenery. I'm not surprised he's doing well and hope he continues to do so. It just wasn't working here anymore.
He's definitely not being asked to play any kind of defense and can just float around. I think he's doing more rink turns than kovalchuk now
The Jackets are letting him roam and not asking him to bang or play D. The thing is that he no longer has a big shot and his goals have to come from around the net. Both his Jacket goals were tap ins.
Players always seem to play better when they leave...as if to give a big "FU" to the old team and prove they were wrong...but totally agree...he's a professional, get's PAID to PLAY HOCKEY...do your job and earn your pay!
I guess he was dogging it here this year. And as a pro, there is zero excuse for that. Good riddance.
Every player has a shelf life and his was expired. We r better without him now and long term. This team as constituted plus staal and maybe Dorset can go toe to to with anyone. I like this version better than last year team. We still have the best gk in league. Solid defense and a world class sniper in Nash. Don't forget our core is still intact and some good young players coming in Lindbergh fasth st Croix miller and Kreider.
I would take Artie any day. I think we should try and trade for him in the offseason if we could. Sathers got the hot hand with the BJ's. I freaking miss that guy!
Bullshit to being treated diffrently.... He is a professional and should have played with his heart every single game... I loved Gabby but was glad to see him go this season he no longer wanted to play for us
No offense, Kev (and no pun intended with where I'm going with this), but I'm not exactly impressed with his offense just yet. First goal was all Dubi, and second goal was the fourth in the game in a blow out. Sure, this pace over 4 games would translate to a 40 goal season if maintained, but it's a small sample size. I'm glad the dude is doing better, though.
@TheNYRBlog because he wasn't the highest payed guy on the team anymore?
OK I lol'd at the first comment. I don't think he is an asshole per say, I just think he was done with the Rangers. His heart wasn't in it and now it is. Maybe they treat him differently...
Yea both goals hes either going towards the net hard or is in and around the crease....DIDNT DO THAT this year
@johnnyb3910 Tough to tell if he was back-checking or cherry-picking because his defenseman was on the other side of the neutral zone as well. The play worked because Anisimov beat his defenseman by anticipating the play. Either way, I'm glad he's scoring, but I think the Rangers are better off now.
@johnnyb3910 Dead on.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG BJ's love him, would not part with him./
