Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that Jesper Fast skated with the Rangers for the first time today on a line with Brian Boyle and Taylor Pyatt.
...talk about trying to stunt a guy's scoring. Fast is supposed to be an exciting offensive threat with a ton of speed and Torts puts him on a line with these two slugs?
Despite Fast skating today, John Tortorella said this about Fast appearing at practice (via Blueshirts United)...
"We just want to take a look at him. I had a chance to talk with him before practice, just to say hello. The ony thought process today was that we wanted to look at him. I don't think he had skated since (last) Wednesday out in Hartford. We had a scheduled practice today and it gave us an opportunity for us to take a look at him also."
Fast, who was wearing #12, has been skating with the CT Whale this week.
Here's a pic of Fast (middle gray jersey) from practice today (via Daily News)...
...so Torts can't trust Kreider who has 18 playoff games under his belt or Miller who has played in 26 regular season NHL games, but might trust a rookie who has no experience playing in North America? Makes sense. I know Torts said they just want to "look" at Fast, but they could have just "looked" at him skating on his own or with the Whale. Could be more to it.
...actually, unless Fast really impressed Torts at practice I can't imagine the Rangers throw him to the wolves like that tomorrow. Most likely back to Whale.
Here were the lines, minus Carl Hagelin, who was given a maintenance day, (via Gross)....
Adding speed, skill and good hands.More goal scoring is needed on the Rangers, Fast has that. This could work.
Other teams throw young guys in there all the time. Everything is like walking on eggshells with this team.
@TheNYRBlog any idea how many followers you lost through the prank? I was one but came back today
I have been thinking about it today, and this is the way I want the Rangers to end the season in terms of line pairings if it were going to be my way, which obviously it is not.
With a trade for Glencross/Clowe (may not happen):
The first line should get 18 mins, the second line should get 16 mins, the third line gets 13-14 mins, and the 4th line gets 9-10 minutes every single game. Mistakes will be made, but the only way this team gets better is if they get consistent, and that starts by playing everyone consistently, regardless of mistakes. This is our team, and i would like to see if that lineup for the last 13 games can get us into the playoffs. I also think either Kreider or Miller is getting sent down, and if we get Clowe or Glencross probably both will be. It is going to be interesting to see which one does if no moves or made, at this point from my perspective it would be Miller.
@TheNYRBlog This late in the year, it's rather unsettling to never know who's in my team's line up. Sure it makes Hank feel real confident
Kevin he was just a placeholder for Hagelin for the day so that the 4th line guys, which now includes both Kreider and Miller, could get a skate in together.
Unrelated with this practice lines. Since tomorrow is a trade deadline. You know who i've always liked? Alex Tanguay. Good LW playmaker. Every year near the trade deadline i hope that we bring him.
Send Miller, Kreider, and Fast down. Fast so he can actually play and adjust to the NHL style rink, and Miller and Kreider so they can build up their confidence again and so they can get 15-20 minutes a night. Bring Newbury back up. Leave the two lines as they are. Hags Boyle Pyatt (not ideal but...well...where else do you put him when the top two lines seem to be working), Asham Newbury Powe. But hey, that's just me.
@TheNYRBlog id rather see a 20 year old kid make mistakes then a useless boyle and pyatt.
@TheNYRBlog u think he will be in the lineup tomorrow? I hope so! I think its time to send Miller down for some seasoning in Hartford
Miller should be in Hartford. He has been brutal and is regressing. Coach is burying Kreider when he should be in the top six. Why is he heaping ice on Zucarello? He has no plan and no clue. If he had no Hank, he'd be fired two years ago.
@hamburgalar1 Traffic on the blog is higher than normal today, so doesn't look like any. Thankfully. lol
@Josh6 I would send pyatt away for a bag of pucks and insert Haley . In playoff games where the speed is ratcheted up pyatt will be left in te dust.
@Josh6 Why do you want Hagelin on the 3rd line? He was doing very well with Stepan or Richards. Why is Zucc given preference?
@jtf1218 Thy have seen this kid all year hedberg is head of scouting out in Sweden and had been watching him closely. Believe me when I tell u they would not have him come over here for. Two week skate in Hartford. He is the real deal. 35 pts in 47 SEL games at age 21 5 pts in 5 playoff games. Also keep in mind in Sweden they only count primary assists so he has been directly involved in all of those goals either scored or primary assist.
@jtf1218 You're probably right, but I just found it interesting they went out of there way to bring the kid in to just be a place holder.
@Medvjed004 i thought he had a heart problem.
@JoshKaye Who is to say that Miller and Kreider lack confidence? Where is this coming from? Would you be more confident if your boss demoted you? I don't get it.
@JoshKaye im betting that boyle and pyatt are not here on wednesday night (hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things-name the movie anyone!). fast should be in hartford unless im grossly wrong about his game and what he is capable of.
@metalsportsfan Based on Torts' comments probably not. But who knows.
@rangerface Torts has to go on a hunch and who's playing the best at a given time. If u haven't noticed zucc has been all over the ice since e got here and gabby has more jump since his return. Whoever is playing well plays simple as that. Although miller still has been getting chances.
@rangerface i dont agree on miller. a few bad games is all. otherwise he has been great and this experience will pay off in the future. kreider? no clue. same thing. repspect their development. if they fuck up bad on ice, can they shake it? that's what torts is talking abot in terms of not trying to mess up their development. it is a chicken/egg conversation but it is what it is. i have to agree with him on this. as far as ice time to zuccarello, who i have never been a fan of, he was an indisputable spark plug on the ice last night. 3 penalties and still got lots of TOI. theres a reason for that. as far as torts having no clue and no plan, i disagree... and that's coming from someone that wants him fired TODAY. he has a plan, and it doesnt work enough (this season). he does have a clue but it doesnt apply to this team make up (this season). he didnt adapt to the roster changes in the off season and IMHO misshandled the week he had for training camp. as far as the hank comment, i disagree. he coached the team very well last year and really understood the line up that he had. he really got the best out of them and indeed, like a true hunter "used every part of the animal". also, since miller has stayed up (beyond the, what is it, 10 games with the big club?) past the deadline, his cap hit, which i believe would still apply (could be wrong) still constitutes his 1st year of the 3 year rookie eligibility has been used. might as well keep him up. brutal and regressing would be accurate if he was a much older experienced player, but hes just had his 20th birthday and is a sponge. plus, he has handled himslef pretty damn well. these players that come up and have a shit ton of skill need to be allowed to fuck up, even ruin the teams chances in a game. how they deal with that worst case scenario is huge part of their development.
woah. sorry. need to send that to my editor.
@IcyCup Love Jagr.
@IcyCup And you're excited because?
@Dminches zucc has been working well with rich and Gabby, and even given gabby second life it seems like.
Seems like it just worked out like that. He's been in the city and was at the Garden last night, and today Hagelin had a maintenance day, so they decided to get a look at him while he's around. Could end up needing him to play on short notice tomorrow if they make a trade involving roster players since the player(s) they acquire wouldn't get here until after the game.
@Medvjed004 as in , his heart wasnt connected to his game.
@Dminches Well I'm certain it doesn't help having your boss play you 3 minutes doesn't help while the other seems to be a turnover machine as of late who played just 7 minutes. Maybe they're not lacking confidence, but their play has taken a dip. We need players who can withstand being in high pressure situations and who won't be a liability on the ice. Miller was a -2 last night and really hasn't been playing his best hockey lately. Maybe Kreider didn't get on the ice due to all of the penalties in the second period, but the trust wasn't there to put him back in. Torts expressed concern with the two kids, and if he feels they'll hurt more than help you have to imagine he'd feel more comfortable using other players.
If Boyle and Pyatt do somehow get traded, well...it's hard to speculate what the lines would be then since I would assume that we get a player(s) to put into the lineup.
@TheNYRBlog he's a thick headed asshole
@IcyCup - great response. well thought out and stated i might add. however, i disagree with the gist of it. when i refer to coach and plan or lack thereof it is offensively. he has been a good defensive coach. my gripe with kreider/miller is that there is an un-eveness there and i have written about this extensively. i don't think torts has been fair with kreider at all and has been overly fair with miller (who has already burned up yr 1 of his contract.) i also disagree with your statement that you can't be young and/or brutal and regress. the nyr all-time roster is littered with young players who were poorly developed. my humble opinion says that miller (projects as a two-way center) should be developing in hartford. his last half dozen or so games he has played poorly. kreider (with his skill-set that projects as a top 6 left wing) needs to be given room and opportunity to grow into his game. he needs to be put in position to succeed, like he was during last year's playoffs.
@KevinDeLury im not! im scared!
@IcyCup ooofa. haha.
@rangerface @IcyCup One great game and Miller/Kreider deserve to be in the NHL and get 15+ mins a night and Torts is wasting/stunting them. One bad game and Miller/Kreider deserve to be demoted to the AHL and aren't ready and have had their development stunted and just need more time. Stop the madness. Is Torts shooting from the hip with the line combinations? Sure. But, I think he knows the different between an AHL and NHL player. Look, he's always coached on a nightly basis, that applies to Vets and Rookies alike. He will ride the guys having a good game and bench the players struggling or 'fighting it'. He plays favorites. Deal with it. I'm not saying it's you guys in particular, but every other person wants them in the AHL or NHL. It's so silly at this point. Just have some patience guys.Now let's all talk about trades and defensive depth. (For the record Torts might have ruined Bickel. Conversely, he hasn't been the same since Ryan Carter blew his face up, so it's probably a combination of Humble Pie and Torts in his case.)
@rangerface youre talking a lot of truth. cant really disagree and learned some things actually lol.
@KevinDeLury always loved jagr. except during gretzkys last game at msg. jagr shits rainbows as far as im concerned and id LOVE to play poker against him and pay off my mortgage in a night.
