And the first utterance of bulletin board fodder is officially out there, as the Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom apparently felt that despite losing to the Rangers in the playoffs last year, Washington was the superior team (via Washington Post)...
“Obviously we felt we were better for seven games last year. We know they’re a good team and we played them before. It’s going to be a tough battle. I think we’re ready and they’re probably ready as well. It’s going to be, I think, a long series.”
...sorry Nick, but if you really were the better team, you wouldn't have let this happen...
Here's what else Capital players said about the series...
“They’re a real physical team. It’s going to be a tough opponent. Obviously, we have a little bit of history with them. We’ve played them a number of times. It’s going to be a man’s series, no question. They’ve got a lot of big guys and they like to play physical. It’s a good challenge for us.”
Karl Azner (via Blueshirts United)...
“The teams are a lot different than they were last year. But like we’ve said also, we don’t care too much about the other team. We’re happy with what we’re doing. The Rangers will be tough to play. I think they’re built for the playoffs. If they can stay healthy they’re definitely a contender, I think.”
...you can tell that the Capitals respect the Rangers and are ready for a war. Which they should be because, I can't say it enough, this has all the makings of another epic series between these two former Patrick Division rivals.
...the high flying Capitals offense vs. the Rangers shutdown defense. And you know what they say, the offense may get the glory, but defense wins championships. Especially when you have Henrik Lundqvist back there.
I'm not looking forward to watching Holtby squirt water in his mouth and hold it in there and make facial expressions like he's never tasted it before. Then again...he only does it when he gets scored against. So lets make him get real acquainted with h2o.
Backstrom is clueless. This Ranger team is better than the one they faced last year. Hockey News is just as more clueless than he is. First off they are saying our window to win a cup is closing?? Richards 33, Hank 31 and Nash 29 and that its a matter of time before the team tunes Torts out. I get Richards, but he will be bought out anyway and we will have money available to make a run at a top FA with that money. Hank wil lbe Hank for at least 4-5 years. . Nash is in his prime.. They forget to mention our defense in their prime as well as Steps, Hags, Zucc, Miller and the other young forwards we still have. St Croix, Fasth and Lindberg as well. A bunch of BS from the Hockey News which is why I dont read it. They also give the edge in forwards to the Caps, special teams and coaching while giving the Rangers the edge in defense and goaltending..
Coaching?? Are you kidding me?? Rookie coach over Torts who has won a cup and is in line to be Team USA coach, yeah ok bunch of crap..
Forwards??? Minus Ovechkin who is all world, top to bottm our forwards are better. Nash not far off Ovechkin and the others are better than what they have.
Their PP gets negated by our ability to stay out of the box as well. Dont know what they smoking but give me a break.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C61F5hMbrRY great memories for that game but i think this call was a lot better. Staal... SCREEN, SHOT, SCORRREESSSS
We've got our work cut-out, especially with a couple key guys out of the lineup. Both teams are on a pretty good run. The Rangers have to keep building on what they've got going and they have to play to win.
LET'S GO RANGERS !!!!!!!!!
I dread this series as a Rangers fan living in the DC area...definitely will not be watching the local news for this series. :)
Backstrom is talking out of his backstrom! I can see that statement being true in football playoff games because a team has 1 bad game or a few bad/flukey plays and they're out. But in sports where there are 7 game series', it's extremely rare that the "better team" loses. The team that gets on a roll will win those series' (see Kings), but to say that the losing team was the better one in the series is just stupid. You lost 4 games out of 7, clearly your team was NOT the better team ass clown!
oh, man, i don't envy your position ...
@AG_Blue Been here 20 years, so I know all the avoidance tactics. :p Being a Giants fan too, it's worse during football season. Definitely don't watch local sports news then (Redskins...blech...).
Attended the Knicks game and the Rangers game here in DC in March (within a week of each other). Both NY teams won...so contemplating finding the $$ for games 1 and 2....maybe we are their good luck charms here!! LOL!!
