Michael Sauer: The News Continues to Be Unkind
Written by James Wrabel on .
New York Rangers held a Dog Walk charity event at Riverside Park yesterday and head coach John Tortorella held a Q&A session with the fans on hand. One fan asked about Rangers defenseman Michael Sauer and his status. The news was pretty grim (courtesy of Jim Cerny of Blueshirts United)
Question: After (Michael) Sauer's concussion, is he doing better and will we see him at the beginning of the season?
John Tortorella: I don't think you'll see Michael. Michael has not responded that well, I'll be quite honest, and I do not think you'll see him at the beginning of the season. That's a big hole for us. Michael played very well for us, and we certainly missed him during the playoff run. I think it's going to be a little bit of time before Michael resumes his career.
On Friday, it was reported by Bruce Berlet that Sauer's condition wasn't improving and the Rangers believed he wouldn't be ready for the season.
- It continues to get worse and worse for Sauer. And it's a shame, because we heard in July he was making tremendous progress. If the Rangers add a healthy Sauer to their defense, you can make the case its the best in the NHL in front of Lundqvist. Sauer plays with that physical edge and throws the body around and it'll be sorely missed if he's not playing anytime soon.
just going to point this out for those on here that think Sauer's helmet was loose... GO WATCH IT AGAIN... IT was the hit that broke the strap and the reason the helmet came off.. not because of how tight or loose it was. Learn a little about physics people....
i was thinking the same thing everytime i hear news on him i get the feeling that he is done playing hockey. Sucks.

Ugh. No good. Hate to say it but alot of guys think it's cool to wear their helmets nice and loose... if Sauer's had stayed on he'd be in a way better spot right now.
Great point. If that chin strap was tight, he might not even sustained a minor concussion.
@KevinDeLury Chin strap was tight - it broke on impact. Sauer said so in interview back in January when he first thought he was going to come back.
@TheNYRBlog That's sad. I hope he's better soon, but don't want to see him rush back and risk a more serious injury.
@TheNYRBlog Head injuries aren't something to fool around with. People need to learn they take more recovery time that other injuries.
@TheNYRBlog @gonyr24 learn something new everyday. It looks like they have big issues with concussions in their family.. so sad
@ttabasco13 @thenyrblog he has at least two brothers, Kurt played for Phoenix but not since 2009 due to concussion.
@KevinDeLury Sure. Or they could go back to the old clutch and grab. These cats get so much speed up ice, those mid ice collisions are brutal and dangerous. I miss watching Mess waterskiing through center ice behind an opponent.
@TheNYRBlog According to Darren Rovell, people don't care about players getting concussions, they just care about Ws and Ls.
@TheNYRBlog Not to mention that Rovell works with three people at ESPN who had their career cut short by concussion - Twellman, Young, Hoge
@TheNYRBlog sir, you know we are all going to click it! Now you give me back headed bad news twice! Lol jk kev, great job once again
Ugh. Such a huge loss for the Rangers. And I really hate that pic of him being run over by Phaneuf.
Crap... You know if Torts is being that candid and matter of fact about it that it's bad. So who fills his spot? Does Bickle get a real look or do we bring in a UFA? Would someone like Rosi at a much smaller cap hit than before be something Sather would look at and more significantly, would it be something fans would accept?
@AnnoyingJoe I think at a less pay and less minutes he could be ok for this team.
