If Cap Squeezed, Del Zotto Screwed

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

delzotto2Since the Rangers and Michael Del Zotto couldn't agree on a deal before the previous CBA expired at midnight last night, the young Rangers defenseman is at the mercy of the new CBA, which, according to Larry Brooks at the New York Post, might not be a good thing for him...

"If the cap is squeezed coming out of the lockout, Del Zotto, who may see his arbitration rights and free-agent eligibility deferred as a result of the agreement, will get less; perhaps significantly less."

The Rangers reportedly offered Del Zotto a two or three year deal at upward of $2.5 million per.

...Del Zotto is going to be begging for that $2.5 million offer after the new CBA is agreed upon. Sather totally has him by the balls in these negotiations. And will end up saving the Rangers some valuable space if/when the cap ceiling is lowered.

TheNYRBlog's Adam Herman had more on this yesterday.

MDZ can go to europe and sign for as long as he wants while not being dictated by the length of the strike

As I commented earlier - if (hockey god forbid) we get locked out for an entire season, there will be other free agents available which puts MDZ in an even weaker position. At this point - worst case he signs a 1 year deal if the season is shortened and tries his luck on the open market. I'm sure Philly would pay stupid money for him...

@TheNYRBlog well put. He should taken what was offered. He has no right to hold out for more money after his average playoff performance
