Dylan McIlrath Won't Be Ready for Camp, Michael Sauer Still Not Healthy

Written by James Wrabel on .

McIlrath_Dylan_NYR_draft_pose_harry_how_getty2010 first-round pick Dylan McIlrath suffered a dislocated knee cap in the Rangers prospect camp over the summer at the hands of Kyle Jean, putting his attempt at making the Rangers on ice for this season. Jean and McIlrath are likely to be teammates with the Connecticut Whale this season

Bruce Berlet of Howlings.net spoke to McIlrath recently about his rehab and his thoughts on the upcoming season.

...“(The injury) was a bit of a speed bump, but I’ve been trying to recover and get my rehab going and just looking forward to whenever camp starts,” McIlrath told Marc Smith of Discover Moose Jaw. “I won’t be ready (for training camp), but around that time I’ll get the go-ahead to start skating, so I’m looking forward to it.

No one wants to get injured, but when you do, you’ve just got to take it with a positive attitude and try to get back playing as soon as possible,” McIlrath said."...

Speaking of injured defenseman, Michael Sauer doesn't appear to be progressing as much as we thought. Berlet informs us Sauer's road to recovery is still laced with obstacles.

...Sauer was sidelined for the season with a concussion thanks to a big hit from Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf on Dec. 5. But the Rangers aren’t optimistic that he’ll be ready for the season because Sauer isn’t symptom-free and could be placed on the long-term injury list...
  • I was really looking forward to seeing McIlrath compete in training camp and see the progress he has made. Hopefully, this injury doesn't hamper his continued development this year.
  • Hearing Sauer isn't symptom free really has me worried we may never see him lace up the skates again. Still very early in his recovery, but it's been riddled with setbacks.

We may never see him lace up the skates again? What information do you have that even somewhat backs that comment up?

@TheKing Its a possibility you have to be open to when dealing with concussions. He could be symptom-free tomorrow, too. Concussion are an inexact science.

How's Eminger's shoulder?

I hope someone knocks Phaneufs head off next year (or apparently the following year). That hit he put on Sauer was complete nonsense.

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG I hate to say this but the hit by Phaneuf was completely legal. The issue was Sauer's chinstrap broke causing his helmet to fly off and him to hit his head. That said, doesn't mean I wouldn't mind seeing someone go after Phaneuf at some point.

Sauer is a good player, but should recover well. There are still a few days, hopefully this team 100%. Already this season about to start!

Honestly I'm taking his comments about Sauer with a grain of salt. There has been no news from the Rangers anywhere regarding him and Jim Cerny has repeatedly said the team is keeping quiet which could mean anything so he is either assuming this or taking it from what was said earlier in the summer.

As for McIlrath, the fact that he'll be skating soon is good news to me as I wasn't sure he would be close to that by training camp.
