Del Zotto: Contract Situation Out of My Control

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

delzottowinnerRFA Michael Del Zotto was one of 14 Rangers at the practice facility for an informal skate today and discussed his contract situation with Andrew Gross of the Bergen Record...

"I'm here and I'm preparing for Sept. 21 training camp. All I can do is prepare for the start of the season and the rest of the stuff is out of my control. I've been around a couple of years, I understand it's a business. I'm preparing for the start of training camp."

...i wouldn't say that his contract negotiations are out of his control. He could have easily accepted the $2.2 to $2.5 million offers the Rangers have been submitting to him.

...listen I don't begrudge anyone for wanting to get paid, but if Del Zotto thinks he's worth more than he's being offered he's going to be very unhappy and maybe ultimately on another team.

A couple of thoughts on the MDZ contract....

Putting myself in MDZ's shoes, I might want to wait out the new CBA before signing a deal. We're not talking about a ton of money on his contract, but I think it would hit a lot harder to lose 25% of it to a rollback. I think he could get the same $2.5 from the Rangers, post rollback, in a new CBA, that he could get today. There also probably talking about "buying years' of free agency, but no one knows when, exactly, he will hit that until the CBA is in place.

When Marc Staal ended his ELC, he got his current deal, with it's $3.9 mil cap hit, and $3.1 salary in the first year. Girardi got his deal that same season, also a $3.1 base salary. I don't think MDZ is crazy to expect $3 mil as the opener for his deal. The guy has shown a bigger upside then either one of those two did in their first 3 seasons.

@TheNYRBlog I think that sometimes a player's agent influences their decisions to to make themselves look like a better agent.

@jon_malone10 Agreed but he can't say it's out of his control. That's ridiculous.

@TheNYRBlog Hopefully someone tells him to just take his offer. He's not worth any more than 2.5 million dollars yet anyway

@TheNYRBlog his agent...almost pointless to negotiate a RFA contract right now

@timdaily I hear you, but reportedly offers have been made by the Rangers & I would hope he has final say on his own contract negotiations.
