Sound Tigers 6, Whale 4

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Last night the CT Whale surrendered a five-goal second period in their 6-4 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Kris Newbury and Kyle Jean gave the Rangers a quick 2-0 lead in the first but it was all down hill from there.

Mike Vernace and Newbury's second goal of the game made it respectable late in third period.

Chris Kreider and JT Miller each had an assist.

Matt Gilroy had a power play assist but was a -3.

Jim Cerny at Blueshirts United has a great recap here.

...the Whale have a really young squad, including two rookie goaltenders with Talbot injured, so there's going to be a lot of bumps along the way this season. But the experience they're gaining is going to be huge for their development.

...not exactly the start Gilroy wanted with a -3, especially with Torts and Sully in the crowd (see below pic via reader Chris H.). Looked good on the point with six shots on goal though. Watch your back Del Zotto.

Here's Whale head coch Ken Gernander after the game (via Blueshirts United)...

Kyle Jean also spoke after the game...

From what I saw if that is how Gilroy is going to play I don't think Del Zotto has to be worried. Yes he has a point shot, but if he can't play defense at all Torts won't even think about putting him the line-up. I said from the start this was an interesting move. I'm even more intrigued now what their plan for Gilroy is as I'm not convinced he's guaranteed an NHL contract if season ever begins.

@TheNYRBlog No idea what you were watching, Gilroy was absolutely painful last night. Maybe even worse than his partner Collins. @CTWhale

@ScottyHockey @CTWhale He had six shots on goal. Wasn't that bad on offensive end.

@TheNYRBlog don't judge the game by the box score, you know better.

@TheNYRBlog @ScottyHockey I'd say at least 4 of the 6 shots were directly into the goalie's chest.

@ScottyHockey @mavanco Agree with no one in front. No one's been in front of the goal on a Rangers power play since the 90s.

@mavanco @ScottyHockey You'd rather not have shots on goal? How do you expect to score?

@TheNYRBlog @mavanco disagree. Biggest probs w/pp were no qb & no one other than Cally willing to stand in front. Pyatt should help.

@TheNYRBlog @ScottyHockey Would rather puck possession with no shots than into the goalie's chest. Especially with inability to win a draw.

@TheNYRBlog @ScottyHockey they miss 100% of the shots they don't take because the owners suck. #NHLockout

@ScottyHockey @mavanco Still shots on goal. One of the biggest problems for the Rangers last year was missed shots on the pp.

@mavanco @TheNYRBlog and the other two he could have picked up and thrown left handed harder ...
