Redden Won't Be Added to Rangers Roster

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

The other day I wondered if the Rangers would give Wade Redden a chance to make the roster if under the NHL's recent CBA proposal his salary would be counted against the cap even if he's playing with the CT Whale. This morning, Larry Brooks of the New York Post puts that idea to rest...

"Ironically, “The Wade Redden Rule” would harm Redden himself if adopted as written. An amnesty buyout would allow the 35-year-old to sign with another team as a free agent. But denied that opportunity (there is no amnesty buyout provision in the NHL’s proposal), Redden will be consigned to the AHL for the next two seasons while the Rangers operate with $6.5 million of dead cap space. They are not adding him to the roster."

...i'm a fan of this proposed rule, however, there should be a one-time amnesty buyout to allow the player to move on with their career instead of, as Brooks states, likely headed back to the AHL anyway. Rangers and Redden have been playing by the rules and shouldn't be punished under the new CBA for it.

...while Brooks is usually very good with his scoops, I still think there's a possibility the Rangers give him a chance to make the roster. Veteran presence, who has obviously worked well with kids. Why not? Plus he's the best first passer in the game. Right Glen?

He was +3 with 5 goals in 156 games for us. We don't need him..

I don't think Brooks put anything "to rest" here.He doesn't explain why the Rangers wouldn't even consider playing Redden if he were to count against the cap anyway.

@TheNYRBlog Fan reaction would be interesting. I'd give him fair chance & applaud how he's handled role, though $6.5mln/yr makes it easier.
