Earlier in the week Neil Greenberg at ESPN Insider gave his list of top 25 NHL players under the age of 25. The list included top talent such as Jonathan Toews, Steven Stamkos and Erik Karlsson.
However, Craig Custance also at ESPN Insider points out that two Rangers players were snubbed big time...
One of the executives was read the list of defensemen in the Top 25 and noticed the exclusion of Ryan McDonagh. "McDonagh for me would be well up there. Just his maturity alone," he said. "I didn't hear Michael Del Zotto either." He felt that Kevin Shattenkirk (No. 20) and Victor Hedman (No. 16) were too high and would have found room for both Rangers defensemen in the top 25.
Finally, in response to the outcry against the numerous snubs in Greenberg's list, Grant Sonier also at ESPN Insider gives his list of most likely future additions to the Top 25 Under 25, including Del Zotto (#13), Derek Stepan (#24) and McDonagh (#25).
Here's Sonier's explanation as to why McDonagh is only ranked 25th...
"McDonagh is a tricky player to evaluate for these rankings. The clock is ticking for him to make the Under 25 list in time, but he's very solid and he will likely peak after his age-25 season. Last season, he was sensational when pairing with Dan Girardi to form New York's No. 1 pairing. But that's really the only strong campaign he's had to date. I think McDonagh has many good seasons ahead of him, but at age 23, he'll have to match his 2011-12 performance in 2012-13 in order to crack the list before he turns 25. He's pretty close to his ceiling, but the talent is on his side. However, the time frame of the rankings sets a very high bar. While they may decry his absence from the rankings, Rangers fans can take solace in his stellar presence on the ice."
...not sure what's more embarrassing, McDonagh being left off the original top 25 under 25 list or Del Zotto ranked higher in the modified one. Either way ESPN proves once again they know nothing about hockey.
...i also love Sonier blaming the criteria for McDonagh's low ranking. The only time Del Zotto should be ahead of McDonagh in one of these lists is if it's in alphabetical order.
Here's TheNYRBlog's James Wrabel's vlog on the list...
James is going to be doing these vlogs the rest of this year and into 2013 on his YouTube channel. If you know James, then you know he wants to get on-air as his profession, and since it hasn’t happened for him yet, why not have him showcase his skills and hopefully turn it into a better overall experience for TheNYRBlog readers?
It won’t be just hockey topics he’ll talk about, but when he does, the NYR Blog faithful will get first crack at them. I urge everyone to like, share with friends, comment and subscribe to help the channel grow.
@TheNYRBlog hahahahaha unreal. We got no say in this. Read my tweets, del zotto wouldn't be ranked in pee wees
@TheNYRBlog ESPN's embarrassing. "Hes pretty close to his ceiling, but the talent is on his side"... Sonier's wording alone is confusing
