Gilroy Discusses Why He Chose Rangers

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Matt Gilroy spoke with Blueshirts United about why he re-joined the Rangers organization by signing with the CT Whale...

"I had options on where I could sign, but this was a comfortable spot for me, close to home, somewhere I have played before, obviously," explained Gilroy. "I am just really lucky to be playing right now, and really fortunate to have the chance to learn from (Whale assistant coach Jeff Beukeboom). I have learned so much from him already. It's incredible how much he knows and how well he explains things. I am really impressed."

Gilroy practiced on the top power play unit Wednesday and will be wearing his familiar #97.

...at the age of 28, Gilroy is really going to have to make an impression with the CT Whale if he ever wants to see the NHL again.

...after thinking about the signing the last few days, I actually do like it. Despite the top tier talent the Rangers have on their blueline, they are lacking depth with Torts obviously not 100% confident in Bickel and Eminger being nothing more than a 7th defenseman. Plus, if Del Zotto doesn't continue to progress, Gilroy could be an interesting option on the power play.

Nice to see him back and under the wing of Beukeboom — maybe that will result in the development of the "stiff/hard on the puck" aspect of his game that was lacking and got him in Torts' outhouse (I would say doghouse, but with Torts' the doghouse is a place of pride ;).

But I I think he has to earn the right to even be mentioned in the same sentence as MDZ now, as MDZ was the NHL's 18th ranked defenseman overall.

For now, if he shows he's going to try for real, Gilroy IMO could be a 5/6/7 D option, again if he shows he's willing to play as gritty a game as the Rangers require from all their D-men.

I'm with you here, Kevin.

Gilroy will be low cost and low maintenance. We already know what he can bring offensively and is an above average skater. The wild card is his defensive game and playing "hard on the puck" as Torts likes to say.

Good thing he's got Jeff Beukeboom to work with now.
