With all the trade rumors surrounding Michael Del Zotto lately, you had to assume a number of scouts would have been in attendance for his return to the lineup against the Stars Thursday night. Or maybe not.
According to Allan Muir at SI.com, no scouts were issued credentials for the Rangers game in Dallas, which he called "kind of odd" considering all the Del Zotto chatter.
...not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Good because any interested suitor missed another poor performance from Del Zotto, bad because no one is interested.
Meanwhile, Craig Custance at ESPN.com revisited the Del Zotto to Ottawa rumor by noting that because of the Senators budget issues, the Rangers would have to take back some of Del Zotto’s $2.55 million salary for the trade to work.
...sorry Ottawa, if you want him so badly, you can take his entire salary.
And it looks like a new team might be interested in Del Zotto's services as Darren Dreger at TSN reports that the Hurricanes have offered Tuomo Ruutu and Jiri Tlusty to teams as part of their search for a puck-moving defenseman.
Ruutu has an annual cap hit of $4.75M, while Tlusty's is just $1.6M.
...the Rangers don't have the cap space for Ruutu, so there's no use even discussing him. However, despite Tlusty's struggles this season (just three goals & recently demoted to the fourth line) he did score 23 goals in 48 games last season and had 36 points (17g, 19a) the year before that.
...Tlusty is also just 25-years old and just entering his prime. I think I just convinced myself this would be a good trade. Someone get me Sather's phone number.
Del Zotto for Tlusty + Brett Bellmore? Ferocious hitter and very solid defensively, right handed as well.
Ruutu is a definite no because of his salary for another 2 seasons plus he's got a no-move clause worked in there as well. Tlusty would be a nice play if he were right handed. Same goes with Harrison. NYR need right handed shots badly.
I can't believe it's taking this long to bring in a physical 3rd line winger or a standard 5 or 6th right handed defenseman who plays at home? DZ, because of the chance of his upside coming through and low salary, should attract our demands.
I would much rather see the Rangers get a physical defenseman for MDZ than a forward. A trade the permanently keeps JT Miller in the press box doesn't do anything for the Rangers
Tlusty is listed as a center in some places, but is he more of a winger? Another guy that can play center is always worthwhile. A guy that can score is always welcome.
I was really hoping for a trade last year or in the off season. My take has been that there's a good hockey player there in DZ who is struggling with the mental part of the game but let him figure it out somewhere else. Now his trade value continues to diminish. They may wind up moving him for prospects or draft picks. Somehow I think the Canes are looking for more then DZ if they're offering up those players.
good point on the right-handed shots
@PharmerBernThen a guy on the Canes I heard could be moved is Jay Harrison. 31-year old with $1.5M cap hit. Canes most physical defenseman plus: https://twitter.com/ShutdownLine/status/404282680004853760
@BrendyJohnson Unfortunately, he's way too expensive for the Rangers.
Given DZ's between the ears struggles, he probably has a better chance at success elsewhere ... sometimes a change of scenery
@Betweentheworlds What a very rational thought. What the hell is it doing on this blog?
Maybe include him in a package, or better yet use him as a threat! " you guys better take our trade as is right now otherwise we're going to include DelZ as part of the package"
