The New York Rangers (42-17-7) lost to the Ottawa Senators (36-25-8) by the score of 4-1, tonight. For a boxscore and recap go to Yahoo! Sports.
...not enough offense and too many turnovers has become a frightening theme for this Rangers team lately. Not ready to panic yet as every team goes through funks and this is the Rangers first real one this season. But talk to me at this time tomorrow night and I might be singing a different tune.
...the power play is effin killing them right now.
...if Biron can figure out how to play well in the first period the Rangers might have a chance in his starts.
...wow, did Kenny Albert jinx Bickel or what? Although his stat was wrong because Bickel was on the ice for Kovalchuk's goal Tuesday night.
...Richards looking more and more like Gomez every game.
...why Prust? Why?
...since the Dubinsky injury the Rangers haven't looked like the same team.
...you think any team in the Eastern Conference is afraid of the Rangers right now? Me neither.
...Del Zotto might want to get his body on the guy going to the net instead of just standing there and watching.
...Girardi is a -6 in his last five games. Those 30+ minute games earlier in the season aren't looking so smart now.
...how awkward was it watching Scott lumber in on the breakaway?
...when Fedotenko has your team's best scoring chances you know you're in trouble offensively.
...right back at it tomorrow night in Chicago.

John Tortorella post game...
Players post game...
Rick.. I Totally Agree.. Can Kreider Step In And Put Some Firepower In This Terrible Slow Scoring Machine.. I Know It Can't Happen Until April.. Well As Torts Says.. We Have Work To Do.. Yes It's Alot.. Lets Wake Up Please???
@TheNYRBlog - Before I read your posts now I play "Taps." My preseason prediction is now rearing it's ugly head at thee woyst time. #NYR
@TheNYRBlog And I know he's back but he's not playing like the guy we've watched the rest of the season.
@TheNYRBlog Since the Dubinsky injury or since the Callahan injury? Realized it last night, last good period was when Cally blocked shot....
What I want to see from Tortorella is more Rupp, more Scott, more Prust, more Boyle, more Fedotenko, more Mitchell. Because these guys do not get enough ice time.
Who else is going to score???
Let be serious here, besides Gaborik and Richards, the Rangers have two 2nd lines and two 4th lines.
As other fans have been posting, they rode their top 2 shut down defenseman and their goalie so far and now they are shot!!
This team needs a shot to the arm because they look dull right now. They need help scoring. Mitchell, Dubinsky, Hagelin, Stepan.....you name it, it aint helping.
The PP is miserable right now and throwing the likes of Boyle and Rupp out there for the second half of the man advantage is a desperate plea for help.
Who needs Nash?????
Gotta say the first goal though it may not have been the best goal for Biron to give up it started with a horrible turnover by Staal at our blue line. The second goal was Staal once again not even making any contact with the stick in front of the net which is completely blown coverage in the defensive zone. They got a tip in front of Marty which is why he couldn't control the rebound but with Staal standing next to them in front they should not have such an easy time getting to that rebound. Third goal Del Zotto stops skating through the neutral zone and never ties up his man who ends up getting the rebound and scoring the third goal. If you watch the replay Del Zotto was ahead of the goal scorer coming out of the offensive zone and just gives up on the play. On the other hand the Rangers lack of scoring has always been a problem throughout the season. They did not have so many great opportunities in the game and the ones they did like Gaborik's shot hit the post. It's a game of bounces. They kept us away from the rebounds in front of their net. We couldn't keep them from rebounds in front of ours.
Unfortunately, the weaknesses in this team that so many pointed to -- even during the various winning streaks -- are now being exposed. Rangers need to get back to what got them here in the first place.... aggressive forecheck, more hitting, digging in the corners, etc. Team looks tired and uninspired.
Don't get me wrong, I like Biron but I think people are starting to lose confidence in him. Something told me when I heard he was playing that it was going to be another crap game.
They played like crap, I hope they have a better result in Chicago because I'll be there to watch the game.
It's been this way all season. But the difference earlier in the year, was that McD, Girardi and Hank showed up and dominated every game. Now McD and Girardi are dead tired out there. Torts burned them out.
It happened much later then expected but this was bound to happen. This is the same 7-9 seed mediocre team that we've seen for the last 6 years. But we had 2 guys shutting down the other team for 30 minutes, and when they weren't out there, Hank was making every save. Now those 2 guys are dead out there, and it's all up to Hank. Much like it was for the last 6 years. This team still can't score, has no powerplay, and misses the 1st period almost every game.
I'm not panicking now, any intelligent fan watching the games could see this coming. Here's the funny thing, there's still a 50/50 chance they win tonight. If Hank plays out of his mind like he has been and they score twice they'll probably win. And they will most likely still finish in the 1st spot in the East. But when the playoffs roll around, Hank won't be enough.
I have issues completely blaming Biron. We made two awful turnovers that were converted into goals by the opposing team. In the month of March we've given up 17 goals, 15 if you take out the two empty netters. In three games, Hank's given up 10 goals. In 2 games, Biron's given up 5. I know Biron hasn't exactly flourished his past few starts, but if what I just posted says anything, it shows that our defense has to pick it the fuck up. Now. If they keep turning the puck over like they have the past few games, then we're fucked.
Also, Scott actually had a pretty good shot coming in for the breakaway. Yeah, it was like watching slow motion actually happen...but he got a nice one off. But I will say this. When they showed the replay of Rupp slamming into the boards, I hate to admit it but I couldn't stop laughing. And the power play...I don't even know anymore. Richards had the right idea. Just shoot. But he needs to find someone else to bang. Soon.
DZ looks a little off, I wouldnt be surprised if that hip is bothering him. So stressed right now. Not when I need the rangers to start declining
@TheNYRBlog Power play MUST be fixed.Get the puck2 the net and don't just stand passing on the perimeter.Movement+puck2 net or playoff exit.
@TheNYRBlog well at least you can't blame the funk on all the moves we made at the trade deadline to boost the offense #NYR
Usually they slump in February but this is definitely a cause for concern... What is happening to our team?!
Not to ignore the myriad of other issues, but where is Richards? I thought he as suppose to be an elite playmaker. I havent seen any skill. Do we have another Captain Inviable on our hands?
Not only are we struggling...everyone behind us is red hot. We're like a marathon runner who led comfortably from Mile 10-25....yet we're on Mile 26, out of gas and we're being caught from behind.
Biron was awful tonight. I thought we started the game well. First 5-6 minutes it was all Rangers...got the early goal and we were generating offense. Then Biron lets in the softie and its like we couldnt recover from that. 7 SOG's allowed the first 2 periods, yet we were trailing. Unacceptable. I dont know how that first goal beat him. From the outside, no screen and he barely moved his glove.
Our PP is beyond dreadful. I think its more poor strategy then anything. We dont have guys in the right areas, and our decision making is too slow.
This team doesnt seem capable of playing a full 60 minute game anymore. Not sure if we're worn down, coming back to earth i.e did we play above our heads the first 60 games?, or a combination of things. All I know is we're not far away from being in trouble.
@TheNYRBlog puzzling line.. since the dubi injury. pretty sure they were playing like crap b4 that. he has been inconsqeuential this year.
@Beckfan5 Agree with most of your comments but please don't mension Richards in the same breath with Gaborik. He is as big a bust with the Rangers as Gomez was.He is part of the problem here not part of the solution. As I said before they signed him is a big mistake and should never had signed him. They should have continnued to build from withtin and take maybe 2 more years to build a real contender.I'll say trade Richards at the draft for someone with real potential and continnue the building process with our home grown prostects.
@YesIAm Agread a 110% . Just like to add that if they lose tonight,1st place will be history, Guranteed. Also Richards need to sit bring up Zuck.
@JoshKaye It does seem convenient to blame Biron, especially after that Hawks game, but he had been the victim of some horrific defensive lapses. Its not his fault that he is simply a competent goalie who backs up the best goalie in the world. Its an unfair juxtaposition. And it goes a long way in showing that this team is a middle of the road team if not for Lundqvist.
@JoshKaye If I'm Glen Sather I'm looking for ways to pay Olivia Munn to put up with Richards until mid-to-late June...
@AndyS I guess. But not if their looking up at Pittsburgh in April.
@MikeL1981 Mike Rupp: a new level in PP desperation...
@MikeL1981 Might be time for Torts to ride Lundqvist and get him hot going into the playoffs.
@AnnoyingJoe @JoshKaye I think your second point is more important than the first. I don't think our D is that much different in front of either guy, I think Hank just comes up with saves that Marty doesn't. Hank has a tendency to move with the play when he doesn't know where the puck is, Marty seems to freeze and wait. And if nothing else, no way Hank gives up that 3rd by getting handcuffed by a wrist shot from the blue line. Say what you will about MDZ's back checking, but if I see a simple shot like that right at my goalie, my first thought is transitioning back to offense while the oppontent is changing lines, not where is the rebound going to go. The kid thinks like a forward, you can't fault him for that.
@TomUrtzNYR to quote evan he told me hed focus on the rangers in p/o's bc that will be what ppl wanna hear about. its arranged by prodcers
